This is what Dublin's new U2 visitor centre would look like

The four storey building will include a reconstruction of the band’s original studio and various themed exhibit areas.

U2-1 ODAA ODAA

THE NEW U2 visitor centre “will make the Dublin’s Docklands and Grand Canal Dock a destination experience for the millions of U2 fans around the world”.

That is the boast contained in planning documents lodged with Dublin City Council that give a sneak preview of what the band is planning for the Hanover Quay site.

The four storey building – with a total floor area of 2,864 sq metres – will include a reconstruction of the band’s original studio and various themed exhibit areas that include a series of abstract scenes such as ‘the Music Room’ and ‘Larry’s Kitchen’.

The application by Golden Brook Ltd and MHEC Ltd also includes a cafe, auditorium, reception and area for selling merchandising.

According to Manahan Town Planners, the visitor centre “will contain exhibit spaces, which will house memorabilia from U2’s vast musical history including old guitars, performance outfits and paraphernalia from their past”.

U2-2 ODAA ODAA

Dublin based architects for the project, ODAA are planning to install a removable pontoon so that fans can access and exit the building on the waterside.

Manahan Town Planners state that the existing building on site is now little used but has come a place of pilgrimage for U2 fans worldwide, some of whom leave messages in graffiti form on the building.

The planners state that it is proposed to demolish the buildings on site and create “a world class tourist attraction featuring a permanent, yet constantly evolving, exhibition of the U2 story on the site they recorded six albums”.

1703-SECTION-2 ODAA ODAA

The planning document states visitors will be able to explore the U2 story “through high-tech, immersive and experiential scene setting installations as well as through multi-layered thematic displays”.

The submission states that “the voice of the band will be a constant throughout”  and “the goal is to create a sense of the social, cultural and political context of the band’s work and their inspiration”.

The planning documentation states: “Rather than a passive experience, visitors will be encouraged to become part of the U2 story, interacting and engaging to uncover deeper layers.”

Manahan Planners state that “the surrounding area and Dublin will gain from this additional tourist attraction”.

26 people are to be employed at the centre with 10 administrative staff and 16 staff at the visitor centre.

The ‘vision’ for the centre states that the exhibition will show “the way in which four Dubliners helped to change the way we think about writing, recording, performance, design, fashion, politics, identity, charity, media and art”.

u2-3 ODAA ODAA

The planning submission states that the creative input of the applicants “will ensure that the premises will always be an innovative, imaginative and exciting development”.

The application has already attracted support from the Irish Tourism and Industry Confederation (ITIC) and the Intercontinental Hotel in Dublin. The hotel’s General Manager, Nicky Logue has told the city council that the centre “would be a wonderful tourist attraction for both visitors and locals”.

However, not everyone is a fan. Local resident, Niamh O’Shea has told the city council that the proposal “is something I strongly object to. This part of Hanover Quay is narrow and residential.

The creation of another tourist attraction in the area would put major pressure on the road facilities and disturb the enjoyment of people’s homes”.

A decision is due on the application next month.

@Stephen Cumbers: very general. All decisions must be based on evidence from past scores. The grade supplied must be based on past performance. There won’t be any room not to be fair. The Principal will get the complete table of data on each student and will pick up on any outliers. I believe students will be treated fairly and can appeal and then opt for exams if they feel that they haven’t.

Peter is indeed responsible for the child at home and the childs behaviour at school also. Peter also probably believes that a teachers work is done when the bell rings. Eh no add another 2 to 3 hours of correcting and lesson plans from home. Peter would also probably gave no problem sending children back to school which is the worlds number one spreader of viruses. Peter is not alone, there are many Peter’s, all with the same ignorant tone.

I assume you had the same issue with your use of “you’re”… You admit that a “good few” go above and beyond but that on whole we’re overpaid? How many is a good few? How many are wasters and can you give specific examples which would prove your claim? Or are you just looking for a good old teacher bash for no reason? I’ve had students ask me about their grades, I can’t blame them really. But the truth is that now some of them will not get what they deserve and teachers are looking to work with this mental new system and not be hung out to dry as a result, that is not a moan. Even if you consciously decide to be 100% objective, you can’t – that’s just the way humans work. Since the teachers and dept of education know this, they have organised as neutral and as fair a process as they could, involving more than the judgement of one teacher and one school.

I definitely would have contacted school management in that case. We have been clearly instructed not to engage with parents or students on the topic of grades and there’s no way I would, to protect myself. I really hoped exams would happen for my students but since school closed I’ve realised that there is a huge disparity among student experiences of working from home. Some have amazing support from parents, others aren’t living in environments where they can work, for many different reasons. I have one student whose mother has to drive somewhere once a week just to get broadband to send her child’s work.

The 22 hours is only class contact time. Way more to it than that nowadays….. and you forgot weekend hours also. And you’re happy to make a blanket statement of “they are NOT working” because you’re not happy with what your own kid’s teacher is doing? Surely you see how ridiculous that is? Did you contact the school and see what the story is?

I have just finished corrections for 5th years spent yesterday preparing for this weeks online classes. We now are in unknown territory with predicted grades but we will engage for the good of our LC’s. I would have gone in every day in the summer if exams were to go ahead and invigorated but they aren’t for health reasons. But you keep the teacher bashing going if it makes you feel better.

Perhaps we could do away with teachers in the scheme? Or how about a public register of how parents and students rate their teachers/school admin and/or the Department of Education? Seems now ”waiting list” is the new control over an entire family’s life in Dublin now. Read an article about a year ago, where the journalist interviewed teachers working abroad. The one who said it was near impossible to get a job due to nepotism and the bureaucracy make sure we keep too many only interested in continuing the system. Seems we replaced one set of tyrants with another when we ”removed” religion from the equation. Or did we remove religion from the equation?

@Carl Hale: not a bad idea at all Carl in fairness….even if neighbouring schools did it. But I don’t think any teacher knows their own students, and what they’re capable of, better than themselves, so it might actually work against a student if you did it maybe. I think teachers will mostly be trying to do their best for their students, as they always do, and there are a few checks along the way, in case there are any possible misjudgements. Far from ideal though for sure.

People arguing against the standardization process are wrong. It’s there to prevent grade inflation as this year 40% of CAO applicants are applying that aren’t in sixth year. Firstly it’s not going to disadvantage high achiever in DEIS schools as there still will be a proportion of the high grades to be awarded. It’s how a distribution works. Anyway the dept have access to their JC results which will correlate and the school itself can argue against an unfair Mark with sufficient evidence. People seem shocked that there is a standardization process when it’s there every year. As usual it’s just people forming an opinion without prior knowledge. Aodhán O Riordáin isn’t helping either. It just has to be as I said to prevent grade inflation which would create a disaster.
