The blood men seen clearly in Israel Ariel Schalit/PA Images

'Some people will get clear patches for sure': Irish stargazers have eyes peeled for blood moon

Widespread cloud is hampering efforts for Irish stargazers to get a glimpse of the rare eclipse.

THE LONGEST “BLOOD moon” eclipse this century began this evening, but many Irish stargazers are being hampered from seeing the thrilling celestial spectacle as a cloudy night pervades across the country.

As Mars is the closest it’s been to Earth in 15 years tonight, it’s a double whammy for keen amateur and professional astronomers alike.

In Ireland, the eclipse is set to last for about 3 hours and 6 minutes, from 9.22 pm to 12.28 am.

The period of complete eclipse — known as “totality”, when the moon appears darkest — lasted for just under 51 minutes in Ireland, from 9.26 pm to 10.13 pm.

David Moore, from Astronomy Ireland, told TheJournal.ie that he was hoping for a break in the clouds before the opportunity passed this evening.

Fortunately for those who not be lucky enough to see the moon tonight, they will get another chance for a visual feast in the not-too distant future according to Moore.

“We are actually set to get another eclipse on 20 January next year,” he said. “We’ll get to see the whole thing from start to finish.”

What is a blood moon?

A total lunar eclipse happens when Earth takes position in a straight line between the moon and sun, blotting out the direct sunlight that normally makes our satellite glow whitish-yellow.

The moon travels to a similar position every month, but the tilt of its orbit means it normally passes above or below the Earth’s shadow — so most months we have a full moon without an eclipse.

When the three celestial bodies are perfectly lined up, however, the Earth’s atmosphere scatters blue light from the sun while refracting or bending red light onto the moon, usually giving it a rosy blush.

This is what gives the phenomenon the name “blood moon”, though Mark Bailey of the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland said the colour can vary greatly.

It depends partly on “how cloudy or transparent those parts of the Earth’s atmosphere are which enable sunlight to reach the moon”, he told AFP.

“During a very dark eclipse the moon may be almost invisible.

“Less dark eclipses may show the moon as dark grey or brown… as rust-coloured, brick-red, or, if very bright, copper-red or orange.”

With reporting from AFP

People talking about vandalising and smashing up or tearing down this wall is knee-jerk nonsense. It is what it is. You don’t desecrate a memorial to the dead, almost exclusively young men and civilians. Republicans and Nationalists will continue to remember their people their way, in their time honoured tradition. It’s a living, breathing thing.

Isn’t it gas the way the establishment claim an allegiance to the men and women of 1916 while at the same time attempting to whitewash them out of history. They don’t know if they’re coming or going. 100 years on and you can be sure the executed leaders of 1916 would be saddened at our pathetic plight.

I believe it was erected by Glasnevin Trust.
A Necrology is a list of deaths – no celebration or tribute is inferred, and I think this is deliberate.
The soldiers died during the clashes of the Rising, so they are listed as people who died.
Not in tribute, just as significant historical information.

THE EERIE ABSENCE OF OUR 1916 RISING GHOSTS
The eerie absence of our 1916 Rising Ghosts
Amongst the hallowed GPO columns and meaningless Spire post

Even if they were Irish and didn’t know that an Irish Republic was about to be proclaimed?

The Irish policeman shot dead at the gate of Dublin Castle at the start on Easter Monday was from county Limerick and probably a Catholic nationalist voter like the bulk of Catholic Ireland up to then.
I accept he had to be killed for the greater good but can’t we remember him 100 years on? He has descendants who deserve their ancestor to be taken into account too.

No other country would try to include opponents of their freedom in their national independence celebrations. Do you remember the fuss the British Legion kicked up a few years ago about plans for a service commemorating Second World War Japanese dead including the innocent civilians killed in two atomic bombings. There was an outcry.

On the same subject, I also saw that eejit Bob Geldoff on the TV the other night giving off about the fighters of 1916. Of course, he never chastises his adopted British paymasters about the many thousands (maybe even millions) they have killed over the centuries across the globe and the plundering of their countries, which have ultimately led to the many famines he so often mourns. Hypocrite and coward.

I would nt put it past the Free-State government to eventually put the names of deceased Black & Tans on the wall at some stage. All in the interests of placating the British and apologising for some of their countrymen having the temerity to demand national independence. These are the same apologists who today won’t demand of the British their files on the Dublin bombings.

Large proportion of the British Soldiers killed were Irishmen trying to put food on the table. I think people have a very narrow one sided view of history if they complain about the soldiers being named among the dead. These weren’t monsters out to oppress the Irish people just normal lads doing their job. Fair enough hold a little anger for a Monarchy/Government that oppressed a nation for 800 years causing poverty, death and famine but not the ordinary Joe trying to get by which is what frontline soldiers always are.

Serious question, don’t know if you have kids or a family but, Would you let your family starve or have a difficult life in poverty rather than join the army if you had no other option?

They were the same as colonised Algerians fighting for France , or Moroccans fighting for Franco. Some Irish men in the British Army even partook in the failed invasion of Turkey. i mean to say like, what was all that about?

It appears that they have also listed one of the rebels as a civilian as well.

The Irish on the card attached to the wreath laid (in our name) by the Taoiseach at the event, was riddled with errors in spelling and grammer. I thought that it richly ironic that he incorrectly spelled the Irish word for “Honour” (Ómós) as “omos” which has no meaning. As the Coimisinéir Teanga has said on the attitude of the state to the use of Irish – a simple message is being delivered.

I’d be more concerned with the typos where British soldiers were listed on the wall, equating them with our patriots whom they tried to put down.

For instance, the typo where the name of one British soldier (Harry Dickinson) who took part in the North King St Massacre, where he went door-to-door killing innocent men & boys in the aftermath of the Rising, was placed on the wall between the names of James Connolly and Sean Mac Diarmada.

Grotesque, but sadly typical of the free stater mentality where such a man is honored equally on a monument with James Connolly & Sean Mac Diarmada.

“Gaeilgeoirs”…..??? It’s a good thing the author pluralised the word with an “s”. We wouldn’t have a clue what’s going on if an “í” was used.

Typical of these language snobs to get so precise about spelling when most of the country cannot speak their own language.

Many’s an Irish speaker could not read or write but they were all fluent native speakers.

I think its right to have British Soldiers names on the memorial. But it would have made more sence to have all their names together.

I think it’s right that British soldiers have a memorial but putting the names side by side is a foolish thing to do, it only serves to cause needless tension and divisions which could have been avoided.
I’d like to see a journal fact check into the wall as there has been little coverage up until it’s unveiling so it is very hard to make an educated comment about it.
