AS THE VISIT by Pope Francis to Ireland culminated in a Mass delivered to more than 100,000 people in the Phoenix Park, an emotionally charged demonstration was taking place in Dublin city centre.
“What I want to do first of all, is let’s take a moment to think about why we’re here,” lead organiser Colm O’Gorman, director of Amnesty International and a survivor of clerical sex abuse, told the crowd as the event got underway.
“Just for us as individuals, I want you to take a moment to think about why you’re here, about your intent, about why you’ve come to this place today, to do what we’re doing here, and just hold for that a moment.”
The crowd fell silent.
We’re here to stand for truth. We’re here to stand and affirm what we know, and to talk about who we are, and who we will be.
Organisers did not describe Stand For Truth as a protest. Instead, it was intended to be a demonstration to mark the upset, hurt, and anger that many feel towards the Catholic Church’s role in Ireland over the past century, and the need to balance the fanfare Pope Francis has received with the realities that faced many in this country.
The pontiff himself addressed these abuses in unscripted remarks during his Mass.
Stand For Truth was timed for 3pm, as the pope was taking to the altar set on a stage built in front of the Papal Cross, itself constructed for the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1979.
More than a thousand people turned out for the Stand For Truth event, many carrying striking yellow-and-blue Stand For Truth placards, which were handed out before the demonstration got underway.
Over the course of an hour and a half, acts including Hozier, Villagers, and Brian Kennedy performed to the crowd, many passing on messages of support for the demonstration.
Others who took to the stage included author Marian Keyes
“Caught between terror and dishonour, Ireland made our abused people invisible,” she told the crowd, “We made you invisible. We made you inaudible. We made your stories unreliable.”
“And then, somehow, through the courage of a handful of extraordinary people, the truth about the Church’s crimes began to be exposed, but the Church slandered and libeled those heroes.
The Church basically tried to gaslight our entire country.
Praising Ireland’s progress as a country – a topic other speakers also praised – Keyes hit out at the Catholic Church’s ‘lack of humility’ when addressing issues relating to Magdalene Laundries, mother and baby homes, institutional and clerical sex abuse:
We need a sincere sign they understand these are real children that they raped. These are real, joyful young women who had sex and got pregnant and then got shoved into a home to be made a slave for the rest of her life. These were real, vulnerable, little babies that were snatched from their mothers and stolen and sold.
We are real. They are real. Nothing they have said has acknowledged that we are real… I can’t understand why they’re not on their knees, begging for our forgiveness.
It feels like they’re still not getting it.
During his own speech, O’Gorman referenced an article published by TheJournal.ie prior to the Pope’s visit, which asked for readers to send in an paraphernalia they had relating to the visit of John Paul II in 1979.
This piece included the former pontiff’s famous quote from that visit: ‘Young people of Ireland, I love you.’
O’Gorman said this brought back painful memories, as a short time after that papal visit, he was raped by a priest.
He said the anger he felt – which he subsequently wrote about in an opinion piece for this website – was part of the inspiration for the need to mark the visit of Pope Francis with a demonstration.
O’Gorman praised the ‘new Ireland’ that emerged in the past two decades, describing it as people realising their own ability to not be guided by the advice of the Catholic Church:
We don’t need to behind crowd control barries and wave papal flags as he walks by in a determined effort to ignore us. We know the truth. So now when I think about, ‘Young people of Ireland, I love you’, I think, ‘No you didn’t, you did not love us’. And we have discovered over the past twenty years the depths of how much you did not love us
The crowd then turned around, and marched in silence to the site of the former Magdalene Laundry on Sean McDermott Street, which in October 1996 became the last of these institutions to close.
The building is still owned by the Catholic Church. O’Gorman is calling for it to be preserved as a memorial.
The crowd’s silence was not interrupted by shouting or beeping as they walked, aside from a few messages of support from passers-by, looks from tourists confused by the march of silent people, and a foreign television crew who had chosen the entrance to Our Lady of Lourdes Church along the route as their spot to record a piece to camera.
After that, performances continued, as the crowd slowly dispersed.
In the Phoenix Park, the pope’s unscripted remarks went further than previous comments on abuses by the Catholic Church. Speaking in Spanish, he said:
“We ask forgiveness for the abuse in Ireland. Abuses of power, conscience and sexual abuse perpetrated by members with roles of responsibility in the Church.
“In a special way we ask pardon for all the abuses committed in various institutions run by male or female religious members of the Church and we ask for forgiveness for those cases of exploitation through manual work that so many young women and men were subjected to.
We ask forgiveness for the times that as a Church we did not show survivors of whatever kind of abuse compassion and the seeking of justice and truth through concrete actions. We ask for forgiveness.

But in fairness who cares about numbers. Both groups of people had a right to their voice and if people got their voice out for either then who am I to knock either event!

@SeanGabriel1453: That is a bizarre figure to come out with. Just look at any of the videos posted. Especially the one posted above. Unless they are trying to say all those people just happened to stumble to the Garden of Remembrance for some other reason than the rally, then all at once about faced and decided independently, nothing to do with the rally, to walk in the same direction at the same time. Some mad coincidence not that they were there for the rally. If it wasn’t so worrying that the Gardai are officially trying to play down the event, it would be funny.
The irish media contributed to this ‘fanfare’ including TheJournal – i am in Germany this weekend and watched all the various news channels around the world last night. Ireland’s Pope visit featured very prominantly on many, including German, French and U.S.
The headlines and discussions between journalists were focussed on the clerical sex abuse, cover-up and oppression in Ireland and across the world. They were waiting on an apology and his will to seek justice for those affected. They were applauding Ireland for demanding accountabilty and justice, and also for the transition to a modern secular society.
In the meantime, i’m watching RTE and TheJournal hype up and celebrate the guy … to the insult to the 10’s of thousands that were abused in the most horrific way.

@Skybloo: the journal reported events as they occured. Even on this very article there’s a guy accusing them of being biased against the church. Regardless of anything outside of it the visit of the pope is news. But the journal covered all related stories as well.
@Skybloo: Sorry I think you are deluded, the Irish media could not ignore the scale or significance of the Papal visit, look at similar media coverage in communist Cuba for example. The Irish middle class clique called the “media” have been pretty unrelenting in their sneers, ageism, wise cracks, smart-ass jibes, with Journal.ie being no exception.
@SeanGabriel1453: you’re deluded. It was a very significant event, all that empty space. So many no shows scared off by a drop of rain.
It is important not to conflate child sexual abuse by clerics, which is entirely on the RCC, with the manner in which institutions such as the Magdalene laundries were allowed to operate legally and in full view. That is on the state.
@Dave Slater: sexual abuse by clerics in state schools? in industrial schools? is not the same as abuse in magdalen laundries? or illegal adoptions’? or infant deaths through poor medical and nursing care?
Aren’t they all ways of dealing with what the catholic church created in ireland?
The entire sexual imbroglio was a business issue for the catholic Church – they created the problem and the ways of dealing with it and made money as they did so

No point in asking for forgiveness if you’re not willing to do the penance. A couple of decades of the rosary is not going to cut it here.
@Audrey Muddiman: he asked for a full pardon in the park. After him changing his language from ‘crimes’ committed back to ‘abuses’ individuals were responsible for, this lad is running for the hills. The us embassador revealing that he knew of cover up has shaken him and he’s going back to forgive us and go easy speak. It won’t cut it til the hierarchy are locked up.

@Bruce van der Gutschmitzer: if you want to know what this pope is all about just look to Donegal…Bishop Boyce “was keen to protect the family of the convicted priest from further trauma by not initiating laicization,” the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church found in a 2011 review.
For those in Donegal, Bishop Boyce’s appointment was salt in the wounds. Francis chose him to replace John McAreavey, who resigned as bishop of Dromore after coming under fire for officiating at the funeral of a priest he knew to be a pedophile. It is unclear whether Bishop McAreavey was disciplined by the church.

We always knew, I knew as a primary kid, the dogs on the street knew and all the politicians, journalists and academics knew. They knew that was child molesters in the priesthood and they knew exactly what the laundries were. They never raised a quip until some awkward peasants like Christine and co forced the issues. Like the villagers around Belsen, they knew.
@Greg Blake: in the context of her full speech she was showing how far Ireland has come from the days that it was acceptable to completely discount survivor accounts out of hand and deny the abuse, then deny cover ups and continue to do so now without any consideration for the victims. But now Ireland and the world know exactly how they do business.
@Bruce van der Gutschmitzer: didn’t get her full speech, but the rest of the comment stands. Much of the shocked condemnation comes now from the very people who ignored it back then. That is why expressions like ‘the truth coming out’ or ‘recent disclosures’ being flung around are sickening.
I can confidently state that everybody in positions of authority and everybody with a public ear, right up to the last decade knew about it.
@Greg Blake: yes, absolutely. I’ve grown up with an understanding that priests are kiddy fiddlers from comedy followed by reports and revelations. Everyone always knew but the human condition dictates that you go along and keep the head down. What ppl did and didn’t do was deplorable but we judge them by today’s standards. She was referencing Philadelphia and the cover ups that are coming out and the Vatican lack of true condemnation and humility. Context is everything

At home didn’t want to go head above the parapet, which is an understandable response for the general population. However there were also people who had voices, who are happy to bandwagon now, especially if it distances themselves from criticism and there are others, newer generations, who are very vocal to mark out their educational superiority over past generations. In reality they would have kept quiet too. The breakthrough came from the persistence of some people who have would been less celebrated than those now on many of the podiums. Cynical.
In all fairness, the silence from SF has been deafening :(

The only notable thing about this weekend was the general apathy on display. The lack of crowds at the events, show both sides failed to strike a chord with the public.
Just goes to show the average citizen only gets exercised when something effects their pockets or to get on the bandwagon of a sporting success.
Glad it went well for all Pope fans.
Certain group from the north didn’t get the media attention they would have hoped for .
We should consider holding a march every year
