Annette TyrrellSource: FacebookA DUBLIN WOMAN has been left stranded in Spain after suffering a stroke while on holiday with her family.
62-year-old Annette Tyrrell suffered the stroke 10 days ago. At first she was well enough to walk into the hospital in Torrevieja, Alicante, in the south east of the country.
However, her condition subsequently deteriorated leaving her paralysed down the right hand side of her body and without speech.
Her family in Ireland then took out an emergency credit union loan and flew to be at Annette's side.
"They told us she has a blockage that they can't unblock, and that surgery is too dangerous," Annette's daughter-in-law Louise told TheJournal.ie. "We didn't know how her blood sugar was (Annette has diabetes), or her blood pressure, she was incontinent, it was a nightmare."
Annette travelled without holiday insurance as, given she lives with diabetes, the insurance quotes she was given were "ridiculous" according to Louise.
"But she had her E111 form so she should have gotten the same medical care as in Ireland," she said.
Then, on Monday, she was discharged from hospital via medical taxi after the Spanish medics told her family that her medical needs had been met as far as they could be.
"We just want to get her home now," said Louise.

"She's in a tiny apartment in Torrevieja, it's not close to anything, and we were worried she'd be there for months and months," she said.

We know nothing about strokes. She wasn't even given a wheelchair when she was discharged. She was degraded."
In order to get Annette home the Tyrrells are opting to have her assessed by a private medical company, with carers then accompanying her on the flight assuming she's considered fit to travel. Upon arrival in Ireland, she would be taken straight to hospital here. The medical bill for that action is estimated at between €6,000 and €8,000.
The family have launched a GoFundMe drive with the goal of flying Annette back to Ireland. At present the page, which describes grandmother Annette as "the most loving, funny, and caring woman you could ever meet", has received close to €9,000 of a €10,000 goal.
"We just want her home to a hospital here, as soon as she's been assessed. She has a 90% blockage in the main artery to her brain and had to go without insulin for days," said Louise.
"It's not right, she should have been given the same medical care as she would get here."

It certainly wasn’t a betrayal of the majority of doctors who were being denied access to information on their own contracts, which were being negotiated by a Union they were not members of. If Sinn Fein had done what Varadkar did, they’d be clapping themselves on the back claiming they stood up for those doctors’employment rights, and rightfully so. Think about it, the Union representing the majority of doctors was being cut out of negotiations by the Government in favour of negotiations with a Union which represented a minority of doctors. Sinn Fein will tell you on the doorstep they stand for workers rights, but I’d be wary now that they’ve shown they’re perfectly happy to hound, for political gain, someone doing the same thing.

That’s means that every person has gotten at least 3,200 calories a day. This is well above the recommended minimum average of 2,500 calories a day. The civilian to combatant ratio is 2:1. The global average for conflicts is 4:1. More people were born in Gaza than died last year (63,200 vs 40,000-42,500).

Israel has a right to defend itself, genocide is not acceptable way of doing so. There have been over 50’000 Palestinians killed since the conflict. They attacked a hospital only last night which is against the Geneva convention. Now a hospital is partially in ruins because of their blood letting.

Another 6,200 were people with stage 4 terminal cancer than Hamas added to the death toll. Another 10,400 have no ID or proof that they were even real people to begin with. Hamas deliberately builds their missile launching sites beside and in civilian infrastructure like hospitals. That means it’s now a military target and fair game.

President Higgins should stay out of politics. Ireland isn’t even in NATO so all Irish supporters are supporting is Big Talk. The same people insist on neutrality, it’s hypocritical. We are dependent on the US for defence and mainly economics. GAZA would fall to the back of priorities quick enough once recession started if the multi nationals left and worse we were bombed due to have no defence systems !

Leo Varadkar was arguably one of the worst people to ever serve as Taoiseach here in Ireland. I struggle to see how any person view him as having any noteworthy achievements while in office. Just looking back at Varadkar’s five years as Taoiseach, it’s pretty hard to spot any. He leaked confidential GP contracts to his friend. He ran up the largest budget deficit since the 1970s under Jack Lynch. He wasted €30 million of taxpayer money on his politically correct referendum that was soundly rejected. He wasted another €2.2 billion on the new Children’s Hospital. He gave RTE €750 million of taxpayer money after they overspend and hid this from the Irish public. Inflation hit 10% under his watch and violent crime hit a 25 year high. He should be laughed out the door and told to get lost.

It was that response (that they upvoted themselves many times on) that I was referring to. I did not like a lot of thing Leo did in office, but I know his parents and they have earned much respect in the area and community.
