IN A RECORDING MADE in the minutes before a couple was evicted from their home in Killiney, Dublin yesterday morning, homeowner expresses his escalating concerns over the arrival of bailiffs at the property.
In an interview with The Spin on Spin 1038, Brendan Kelly, 71, described events at the house as bailiffs forced him and his wife from their home.
Kelly acknowledged that the bailiffs were technically legally entitled to gain access to the property, but accused the bank of forcing them out onto the streets over their failure to pay their mortgage.
The Irish Banking Resolution Corporation (which incorporates the former Anglo Irish Bank) secured a repossession order on the home in 2010 and notified the Kellys ahead of the planned repossession.
The couple held a mortgage of over €2m on the property, which Kelly said they had had difficulty repaying in recent years. They have been living at the property for about seven-and-a-half years.
He said they appealed to the bank on the day before the eviction, but that IBRC said that the eviction would go ahead.
In a statement, the IBRC confirmed a repossession had taken place in Killiney yesterday, adding:
A full legal process has been followed in arriving at this decision therefore for reasons of client confidentiality the Bank cannot comment on the specifics of this case.The decision to repossess any residential property is highly regrettable and comes only after all options have been fully exhausted and the mortgage is deemed to be unsustainable.
The eviction was brought up in the Dáil today, with Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald saying that while she believed this eviction was only being covered because it was on ‘millionaire’s row’, it is “symptomatic of a broader crisis in society”.
Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, who is a TD for this constituency, described images of the eviction as “quite distressing” and said that although the Kellys had not been in contact with him, he is making arrangements through his constituency office for further details on the case.

We don’t even have to buy the tankers.They come here regularly with crude oil to the refinery.Fill them up with the Ballygowan on their return journey to the Middle East.
@Padraig: Oil distribution developed – water will too – if necessity dictates ! A centralised approach to water is vital – the lack of any business case for the meters is the main issue. HNY all.
