GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED a fifth person as part of an investigation into an organised crime gang suspected of being involved in commercial burglaries nationwide.
A range of items were recovered during searches at 11 houses in the Enniscorthy area yesterday morning.
Three men, two in their 40s and one in his 30s, and a woman in her 20s were arrested during the operation.
Gardaí have now confirmed that a fifth man, aged in his 30s, was arrested yesterday afternoon. He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at a garda station in the southeast region.
The searches were carried out as part of Operation Thor, An Garda Síochána’s national crackdown on burglaries.
Gardaí seized cash, mobile phones, satellite navigation systems, walkie-talkies, a car key reader, a small quantity of cigarettes and financial documents during the searches yesterday.

The Gardai are to be congratulated on their work in this case. Organised crime gangs whether Irish or non Irish are not easy to catch. No doubt a lot of hard work and time went into stopping these people.
So spoke to a few friends living in the town, the only Gardai they saw yesterday was two, enjoying breakfast rolls in a service station, not a sight of check points or together 50 Gardai alledged to have raided various premises yesterday. I fear there’s a lot of spin going on here and very little substance

@Joseph Dempsey: there was no mention of checkpoints in the earlier article, only searches which were carried out on certain premises. The searches & arrests would have taken place early in the morning; so unless your friends were out at the crack of dawn or saw the premises in question, they’re not going to encounter the gardaí carrying them out. Five arrests & the seizure of evidence is hardly spin.
@Joseph Dempsey: Garda special units don’t eat breakfast rolls so you wouldn’t see them around a service station or a chipper.

@Joseph Dempsey: were your friends at those addresses at 7 am this morning? They were all done at the same time to prevent them warning each other of the searches. Irish car thieves don’t have key readers so that’s why I’d assume they were from Eastern Europe. When you said you had a few friends in the town did you actually mean you have “few friends” You seem to have very little substance yourself.
@shellakybooky: Oh no! Shocking. Humans get lunch for food in order to survive. If they are lunching on the road which not all workers have to do they are at least in a position to respond more rapidly to an emergency. Or should they eat enough before 10 or 12 hour shift to last them their full shift?
