A MAN HAS been arrested at Dublin Airport after he ran on to the tarmac near Terminal One because he missed his flight.
The incident happened at around 7am this morning, when the man was tackled to the ground by airport police while he chased a Ryanair flight bound for Amsterdam on the tarmac.
It is reported that the man – who is in his 20s – was seen banging on the window of the terminal moments before his flight departed.
After asking ground crew to stop the plane, the man is understood to have left the terminal building before he made it as far as the taxiing flight, when he was arrested.
A garda spokesman said the man was taken to Ballymun Garda Station, where he is currently being detained.
In a statement, an airport spokesman told TheJournal.ie: “A male and female passenger were late for a Ryanair flight to Amsterdam this morning and arrived at the boarding gate after the flight had closed.
“They were engaging with Ryanair staff at the gate and the male passenger was becoming agitated.
“He was banging on the window to try and get the aircraft to wait and he then broke through a door and made his way onto the apron, trying to flag the aircraft down.
“He was was initially restrained by Ryanair staff on the apron and airport police, who had already been contacted, arrived on the scene almost immediately and arrested him.
“He was taken to the airport police station and will be handed over to the gardaí.”

Fake News this is just Ryanair trying out their new boarding strategy …the plane doesn’t actually stop anymore it just slows down and passengers have to jump on.

just read the court report , unemployed so legal aid to be granted of course and then he mooned at journalists outside court. He had the 200 bail money though. Cant say what i want to say ill br banned

airport spokesman told TheJournal.ie: “A male and female passenger were late for a Ryanair flight…” – my thoughts are with that female who must have been mortified by the actions of her partner, maybe its an event worth recalling well into the future, “remember that time you chased the plane in Dublin”. Heavily slanted towards the airlines view of events. It is well known that the check in personnel love nothing better than telling people the gates are closed. Meanwhile the plane sits on the runway for the next 45 minutes loading suitcases.
@Sean: check in close 45 mins before take off for many reasons. Checked baggage takes some time to get from the desk to the plane. All of the baggage needs to be weighed and loaded so that fuel amounts can be calculated correctly, same for numbers of passengers. Everyone knows that the time a checkin closes is not the time the plane takes off.

I can understand WANTING to chase the plane but a sober brain knows you’ve zero chance…. but a drunk one…..

Just got the lowdown. Apparently they we an Irish couple living in Australia. They were back in Ireland for his mother’s funeral. They flew home via Amsterdam as it offered the cheapest fare. As he is applying for residency in Oz he had to get special permission to leave and even then is restricted to a certain timescale and had to be back in Sydney by Saturday am. The couple were late for the Ryanair flight as the rental car they hired broke down enroute. Apparently they had to hire a taxi at a cost of €500 to try and make the flight. So the whole mess will cost him a huge fine, €3000 in replacement airfares, €500 taxi. Cancelled residency application and loss of $12,000 lawyer and app fees. His mums dead and girlfriend has decided to leave him. No wonder he needed to board that flight!

Poor man, who knows what pressure or difficulty he was under to cause him to act so irrationally. From here in the safety and sanctity of a comments section it is easy to poke fun of him and deride, but for him to take such futile and arguably dangerous action he must not have been thinking clearly and was pushed to this desperation and now he has consequences to answer.

I did once have to run on to the (shelled but repaired) tarmac at Beirut Airport, wave at the pilots, run up the steps, hand over a document to a passenger, run back down the steps and off the runway.
