Facebook management to be called before Oireachtas Committee over 'alarming' security breach

Yesterday it emerged that up to 50 million accounts were affected this week after a flaw on the social network was exploited by hackers.

FACEBOOK BOSSES IN Ireland are set to be called before the Oireachtas Committee on Communications to explain the latest data breach to hit the social network.

Yesterday it emerged that up to 50 million accounts were affected after a security flaw was exploited by hackers, allowing them to steal “access tokens”, the equivalent of digital keys that enable them to access users’ accounts.

Chair of Oireachtas Committee on Communications Hildegarde Naughton said she would contact Facebook’s senior management in Dublin after it emerged her party colleague, Senator Tim Lombard, had his account hacked.

“It is quite alarming that Facebook users have suffered such a data breach,” Naughton said.

“It highlights the precarious nature of uploading sensitive or personal content into the trust of social media giants.

“What security measures are in place for account holders and what are Facebook doing to prevent such a future occurrence? These are just some of the questions that we require answers for.”

The Fine Gael TD added that she will be discussing the issue with committee members on Tuesday.

Following the breach, which took place earlier this week, the company said it had fixed the vulnerability and contacted police, while it also said it was temporarily removing the “view as” feature, which allowed users to see how their profiles look to other people.

@The Truth: I find it funny how the same people who blame Facebook for being hacked are the same people who criticised George Hook for his comments on sexual assault. If women shouldn’t be told to take precautions against being violated why should Facebook?

@ABCD: I don’t think he did, I think he wanted the woman to also take safety precautions, there was a witch hunt against George, he denounced that the guy should go to jail absolutely, but said the woman should take personal responsibility for putting herself in that position.

I don’t walk down unlit alley ways with a group of addicts hanging out doing drug.

I don’t leave my house door and back door wide open when I am gone on holidays.

Hello Facebook, em this is the Government here. I was just wondering what date it would suit you for a quick chat about that ahem, security breach. We need to be seen to be doing something you know how it is. How about you find a date that suits and we could have you over to Government Buildings for a smoked salmon and caviar lunch. Or if you’d prefer we could look at the lunch menu in Guilbauds or Shanahans. Your call. Our treat. We’d be only too delighted to have you over. Also and I hate to trouble you with this but we have another pesky FOI request – we are going to send it over to you and you might let us know if there is anything in it you might want redacted. BEEP!

Another reminder to never post crucial personal info onto Facebook, Instagram and What’sApp. Only post silly stuff, or content that you would like people to steal and spread around.

Government: so, about this security thing, what the hell is going on?

Facebook: here’s an envelope with ten million quid to help with the homeless

Government: grand so, do you mind staying in the room a bit longer as the press are outside and we need to make it look like we had a proper discussion?

Facebook: not a bother, sure let’s send each other friend requests while we wait.
