Brett Kavanaugh testifies during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on his nomination be an associate justice of the Supreme Court SIPA USA/PA Images

'He has not told the truth': Ex-classmate of Brett Kavanaugh contradicts his claims about his drinking habits

It comes days after the FBI opened a probe into allegations against the Supreme Court nominee.

A ONE-TIME CLASSMATE of Brett Kavanaugh has claimed the US Supreme Court nominee was an habitual heavy drinker, challenging his testimony to the Senate last week.

Chad Ludington’s comments come days after the FBI opened a Senate-requested probe into allegations by three women that a drunken Kavanaugh sexually abused them or engaged in sexual misconduct while they were students in the 1980s.

“I can unequivocally say that in denying the possibility that he ever blacked out from drinking and in downplaying the degree and frequency of his drinking, Brett has not told the truth,” Ludington told reporters.

The North Carolina State University professor, who said he had contacted the FBI with his information, indicated in a statement Sunday that Kavanaugh was “belligerent and aggressive” when he drank.

Earlier, Trump had defended his pick but admitted that the appeals court judge has had a “bit of difficulty” with alcohol.

In a White House press conference, the US president sought to excuse excessive drinking by teenagers, while going beyond Kavanaugh’s own testimony on his past use of alcohol to the Senate Judiciary Committee last week.

“I was surprised at how vocal he was about the fact that he likes beer,” the president said.

“He’s had a little bit of difficulty. He talked about things that happened when he drank. This is not a man that said … he was perfect with respect to alcohol.”

He also questioned why investigators needed to examine the 53-year-old Kavanaugh’s high school record.

“I think it’s very unfair to bring up things like this,” Trump said.

“I graduated from high school and while I did not drink, I saw a lot of people drinking,” he said.

“They drink beer and go crazy and they were in high school… Does that mean that they can’t do something they want to do in their life?”

He returned to the theme during a campaign rally in Tennessee, where he accused opposition Democrats of being motivated by politics.

“They have been blind in a blind rage ever since they lost the 2016. They have gone loco,” he told supporters.

Bar fight

In Thursday’s extraordinary hearing, Kavanaugh vehemently denied the sexual abuse allegations and challenged suggestions he had a drinking problem at the time.

“I drank beer with my friends. Sometimes I had too many beers,” he told the panel.

“Yes, we drank beer. I liked beer. I still like beer,” he said.

“If every American who drinks beer or every American who drank beer in high school is suddenly presumed guilty of sexual assault, it will be an ugly, new place in this country.”

The New York Times also reported that Kavanaugh was questioned but not charged by police after a 1985 bar fight in New Haven, Connecticut where he was accused of throwing ice on a fellow patron.

A witness said that a friend of Kavanaugh’s then threw a glass that hit the same patron in the ear, causing bleeding.

US media meanwhile reported that the FBI had begun their interview of Mark Judge, Kavanaugh’s former best friend and a key figure in the misconduct allegations leveled by Christine Blasey Ford.

Judge’s interview started but “has not been completed”, his attorney said in a statement quoted by Fox News.

In last week’s hearing, Blasey Ford said Judge witnessed Kavanaugh’s alleged assault and jumped on top of them as it happened, sending all three tumbling and allowing her to escape.

Clock ticking

Trump meanwhile said the White House would not restrict the new FBI probe, requested by senators before they take a final vote on Kavanaugh.

“I think the FBI should do what they have to do to get to the answer,” Trump said.

“I want it to be comprehensive… With that being said, I would like to go quickly,” he added.

“We don’t want to go on a witch hunt, do we?”

Senators, including Republican Jeff Flake, struck a deal Friday that gives the FBI one week to conduct its investigation and deliver its report.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate, made up of 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats, will be “voting this week” on advancing the Kavanaugh nomination, setting up a possible final confirmation vote this weekend or early next week.

“The time for endless delay and obstruction has come to a close,” McConnell said.

Last week, Flake expressed eagerness to see Kavanaugh confirmed but said he wanted a “better process” for assessing the allegations.

Flake said over the weekend that he would vote for Kavanaugh unless the FBI finds something in its investigation.

@Stephen Duffy: So you’re not interested in what Dr Blassey Ford has said? Kavanaughs performance at the hearing has absolutely proven that he is in no way suitable to be a judge never mind get a life time appointment to the highest court in the land. Anyone with eyes in their head could see he is a sleeze and a liar.

@Siobhan O Reilly: well I know her best friend who she claimed witnessed to assault said she never met BK and never attended the party in question. She didn’t say she couldn’t remember; she said she didn’t. But when this was put to her Dr. Fords disgraceful response was.. “she has health issues and I hope she’s looking after herself”.. where was the outrage there? What about her drinking habits, where was her yearbook for examination and public scrutiny?? She says shes 100% sire shed only one drink yet cant say when the party was where it was, how he got there and how she got home.. i expect if she divulged any of that information her story would be blown out of the water.. In the absence of any credable evidence all we get is the misogyny card..

How would you feel if the roles were reversed? You would say she was rightly bravely and adamantly defending herself. The narrative would change with the gender roles and you know it. There were so many inconsistencies in her story that it is unbelievable and incredible despite all the coaching that “anyone with eyes in their head could see”. @neilo: I think that the Kavanagh opponents have hijacked feminist movements to gain traction. To me, feminism should mean promoting women’s issues that are not level with men’s issues to equality but the notion of siding with any gender because of their gender is wrong. Witch hunts originated from the persecution of mostly outspoken (or for whatever reason) disliked women in society. One instigator would shout witch & mob rule would take over & it was guilty until proven innocent instead of the democratic way we would like to endorse nowadays. More men have been subjected to this recently than in the past but it’s always wrong. I feel that this is what’s happening here whether he is fit for the job or not. Being Trump’s choice is detrimental to your career in the current social climate.

One ironic (possibly moronic) example was a hillbilly I heard being interviewed on TV giving out about Obama and the healthcare system he introduced saying it was a drain on the country’s finances. The know-it-all smirk was wiped off his face when the reporter skillfully established from him and pointed out to him that he himself in fact was benefiting from Obamacare and that he would have no healthcare if Obamacare was repealed. The look of shock on his face was priceless. He didn’t even understand what he was protesting about it seems.

Every US president has been caught out in a lie at some stage. Both Clinton and Lewinsky lied under oath or intentionally misled during their controversial incident. Also Hillary Clinton lied about the emails until she got caught out and the Democrats preferred to focus on fact that it might have been Russisns who leaked info to deflect. Don’t get me started on Trump! Judges are no different, I assume, but we don’t live in a Utopia. I found his testimony believable relating to the assault allegation but he deflected a lot in other areas. Nobody should lie but they all do.

I mean he got emotional recounting the Xmas holidays when he would sit down with his dad and look thru his calender for the year and would tear up at the thought of his father

@colm connolly: John Oliver never says anything best. He talks for 20 mins to people who agree with him. He’s basically a secular TV evangelist.

He’s committed perjury with his own calendar being conclusive proof of that.We can argue until the cows come home about the credibility of the accusations about him and sexual assault but a nominee for supreme court justice perjuring himself should be game over. Many of the “65″ women supporting him have recanted or changed their tune,he has 3 accusations of sexual assault hanging over him,he’s very obviously lied about what some of the entries in his yearbook mean and former classmates including his college room mate keep coming out to say he’s lying consistently. If Republicans cared about the courts integrity they wouldn’t risk putting him there in a million years, they can fill the seat easily with somebody with the politics they want. But it shouldn’t matter because he PERJURED himself.

They can’t. This was always about pushing any final Senate nomination beyond the mid-terms, in case Democrats had the eventual numbers to constitute a majority.

The journal won’t post this but it’s worth reading what the sex crimes prosecuter who interviewed both parties had to say about the allegations.
One of the links is a conservative website bit it has the details of what was in the memo. The other is CNN confirming what is in the first website.

If you are interested it’s worth seeing both sides of the argument

@neilo: No I’m not choosing to believe anyone I’m just saying it is worth looking at the testimony she gave from the eyes of the person that interviewed her. You automatically assume I believe him over her. Just thought it was worth providing a diversity of opinion that thejournal doesn’t
