Met Éireann warns of 'ferocious looking beast' as storm expected to hit overnight on Thursday

Today is set to generally be blustery, with strong and gusty southerly winds.

A STATUS YELLOW rainfall warning remains in place for three counties in the northwest this morning.

Met Éireann yesterday issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning for Donegal, Mayo and Sligo. The warning came into effect at 1pm yesterday and will remain in place until 3pm this afternoon.

The forecaster says a slow-moving band of rain will continue to bring heavy showers at times with additional rainfall amounts of 25-44mm likely.

Elsewhere, Budget Day is set to generally be blustery, with strong and gusty southerly winds.

Rain is also expected over Connacht, and as noted above, much of Ulster, with some poor driving conditions.

It is to be brighter and mostly dry elsewhere in the country, with top temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees.

Tomorrow is again set to be breezy, with fresh and gusty south to southeasterly winds. Temperatures will range between 17 to 21 degrees.

Looking forward to later in the week, Met Éireann has said it will be very unsettled right through the next few days and over the weekend, with some heavy rain and flooding at times.

It has said there is potential for a named storm to come close to Ireland later Thursday night and early Friday morning, as a deep area of low pressure is set to track northwards, to the west of the country.

The exact track of the storm is still not certain, according to Met Éireann. ‘Callum’ is the next name on the official storm-naming chart for 2018-2019, but the forecaster is not yet using that name to refer to the system.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Nine O’Clock News last night, forcaster Joanna Donnelly said: “[It's] quite a ferocious looking beast coming our way there in low pressure with associated strong winds and heavy rain.”

It looks as if it will be a dry start to Thursday night, and then it’s due to become extremely windy and stormy later Thursday night and much of Friday morning.

Strong to gale force and blustery south to southeast winds are to develop overnight and will become southwesterly early into Friday morning.

Met Éireann has said this could lead to some disruption, with some damaging gusts in places, especially in exposed Atlantic coastal areas.

There will also be heavy rain, high seas and high tides, with the added risk of coastal flooding.

@John Campbell: tbh these warnings work, more people are on the roads these days than ever before plus 5 people have died in less than a year because of bad weather, would certainly of been more if red alert was not issued for Ophelia

@Peter Cahill: ive said it before and I’ll say it again. This non stop storm action only started happening when we started naming them. Time to start naming heat waves. It’s the only solution!

@Peter Cahill: Better get used to it.
Climate change is here and most of us heard of a severe warning to all Government’s yesterday . We were all told it is only going to get worse if drastic action to halt its gallop is not taken now.

They say it’s as big as four cats and it’s got a retractable leg so’s it can leap up at you better. And you know what, Ted, it lights up at night and it’s got four ears, two of them are for listening and the other two are kind of back-up ears. Its claws are as big as cups and for some reason, it’s got a tremendous fear of stamps! Mrs Doyle was telling me that it’s got magnets on its tail, so’s if you’re made out of metal it can attach itself to you and instead of a mouth, it’s got four arses!

@Daniel Wilson: the last storm was worse than Ophelia in many areas. It’s a pity that they didn’t take that one seriously and do some “scaremongering” and maybe people would not have died. It should have been a red warning but wasn’t even though the gusts in some places were as strong as the strongest that Ophelia had to offer. I have never personally seen as many trees fallen after a storm as the last one.

@John Mullin: The Criteria for red alert was not met with the last storm apart from a few exposed costal areas. Ophelia changed track at the last moment after the red alerts where issued.

This storm could be very damaging too as there’s still.leaves on trees.

I will say the warning systems will have to change. The last storm should have been red in many areas due to the time it hit.

@Philip Morgan: yes but those few coastal areas you mentioned weren’t given red warnings and if anything they should have been a priority seeing as they are more exposed and further away from medical facilities as a certain caravan dwelling tourist could vouch for if she were still alive. Why should they wait for storms to hit urban areas before they consider upgrading to red, do fishermen and their families not count for example?
