File photo of shipping containers at Dublin Port. Britain made the biggest dent in Ireland's trade surplus for 2011. Mark Stedman/Photocall Ireland

Revealed: the single country that's hurting Ireland's trade balance

There’s one single country from which we are importing more and more stuff – and it’s hurting our overall trade figures.

WHEN PUTTING TOGETHER our gallery of Ireland’s 20 best trading partners for 2011, we came across one particular stat which showed just how difficult it can be to try and build an economic recovery largely fuelled by exports.

There’s one country – among the highest consumers of Irish goods – which has sent us more and more stuff in the last few years, a statistic which makes it more and more difficult to build a positive trade surplus.

Well, when we say ‘country’, we mean ‘three countries’… because the area in question is Great Britain.

While Britain has always between a happy consumer of Irish goods and services – with exports growing by a decent €622 million last year – the good work was undone by a rampant year for British exports back to Ireland.

Ireland imported €13.82 billion of British produce in 2010 – but that rose to €15.62 billion last year. The end result is that Ireland’s trade deficit with Britain deteriorated to the tune of €1.174 billion.

To put that in context, if you take the US out of the picture, our losses to Britain are almost as high as the gains we made from the next four best trading partners: France (€395m), Italy (€383m), Israel (€245m) and Denmark (€221m).

As for Northern Ireland, meanwhile… the North just missed out on the Top 20 of countries which proved better for the Republic last year.

Although imports from the six counties to the 26 counties crossed the €1 billion barrier last year – from €990m to €1.047bn (and not all of that is professional footballers) – exports grew from €1.316bn to €1.408bn. That leaves the Republic some €36m better off.

After Britain, the countries which made the biggest dents in Ireland’s trade surplus were Malaysia (€236m), Spain (€207m), the Netherlands (€141m) and South Korea (€132m).

GALERY: Ireland’s 20 most improved trading partners in 2011

Didn’t Tesco Ireland change their stock range a year or two ago to include less Irish goods and more UK-produced foods? That change alone could count for alot of this difference. I think Irish exports growing by so much last year is a great sign though.

I don’t actually follow any sports teams, Irish or UK. I always find it ironic though, how we have all these fiercely patriotic folk who curse the English at every opportunity but nonetheless support English footy teams and buy their kits… and might just deck you if you knock their chosen team!

Can any fans of UK teams answer this for me? What is the process an Irish person goes through when choosing a British team? Do you pick the one that’s doing best at the time and stick with them? Genuinely curious.

You can see a Tesco,M&S,Topman Riverisland and many more to name while Irish stores like roches stores and Peats are closing I’m surprised the trade deficit isn’t higher.

@Eugene it was probably a Tesco ad alright (this is what they say on their website http://www.tesco.ie/corporate-responsibility/suppliers.htm ). SuperValu stocks a higher % of Irish products in its stores but the sheer size of Tesco means it beats everyone on volume. Saw TV doc a few months ago, with the supermarkets cutting the prices to Irish suppliers (plus any special offers such as ‘buy one get one free’ or special positioning in supermarket is done at the expense of the supplier NOT the supermarket). As the large supermarkets control such a high % of the grocery sector, suppliers don’t feel like they can speak up, as they’d lose business v quickly.

the principal land of a country, region, etc., as distinguished from adjacent islands or a peninsula: the mainland of Greece.

Why is it that whenever Ireland goes through an adverse stage they look for someone else to blame.
    The UK, France, Germany etc.
I realise that Ireland is dwarfed out by economies such as the UK but where would we be without Tesco, Lidl, Aldi etc?
Healthy competition is always favourable for the consumer.
And you have to ask yourself as to why Ireland is increasingly importing from the UK.
