Islanders to cast their ballots in the presidential election today

Registered voters off the coast of Galway, Mayo and Donegal will cast their ballots today.

AROUND 2,000 PEOPLE who are registered to vote on islands on Ireland’s west and north-west coast will have the chance to go to the polls today, in the presidential election and blasphemy referendum.

Polling stations will be open from 7am this morning on islands off Donegal, Mayo and Galway.

The island with the largest potential electorate is Inis Mór, off Galway, RTÉ reported.

Across four Galway islands, 1,200 are registered to vote.

Mayo has three islands, while Donegal has five with eligible voters. The smallest island off Donegal – Inis Fraoigh – has four registered voters.

Five of the candidates appeared at the last TV debate before the election yesterday evening

Sean Gallagher was a surprise attendee, but despite the last-minute addition, no new information was forthcoming from the five presidential hopefuls as the race for the Áras enters its final day.

In what was perhaps the debate’s standout moment, none of the candidates was able to give a correct answer when quizzed about how much those who are paid social welfare receive.

@Fiasco99: Russian Bots never seem capable of giving a straight answer to that question…

@Fiasco99: It was a disengenuous question.

Why do the left just attack the person. They can’t debate the ideas. We are all “Russian bots” to them?

They don’t see people having different views to them as even human but we must be machines.

@Fiasco99: it wasn’t disingenuous. I simply can’t fathom any coherent reason anyone would have to vote for Casey other than to throw a spanner into thw works which, I’m sorry, is Russia’s modus operandi in terms of foreign policy. Please tell me why Casey other than “he’s not afraid to speak his mind”… because when I’m langers drunk I’m not afraid to speak my mind, but I’m not going to be made president for it.

It’s hilarious that they always vote a day early. The islands are a few miles from the coast. You’d think they were in the Falklands.

@Jonathan Baum: I believe it’s a provision for in case there’s a severe storm or some other reason for not being able to transport the votes to the count centre.

Why is this a story for EVERY election and referendum as if it’s something new?

Curious about that island with just four registered voters. Presume they have from 7 am to 10 pm to actually vote, same as the rest of us? So there’d be two people being paid to staff the polling station for 15 hours, wondering when or if the four are going to show up?

Allegedly Mickey D is sending the government jet to the islands to collect the ballot boxes…for security reasons…apparently…

I am definitely voting for Peter Casey to be President of Ireland tomorrow. Mr Casey is the only candidate who offers anything different to what the rest are saying, he is the only one who is saying what the people are thinking.

The incumbent, Michael D. Higgins, who enjoys an unfair advantage, is a self-righteous, smoked-salmon socialist who has had more than enough time (seven years!) to milk the office of President.

Sean Gallagher has been an utter flop and disappointment and has been nothing more than a bland, establishment-type candidate. Gallagher hasn’t had the courage to say anything worth hearing.

Gavin Duffy, for some bizarre reason, has presented his candidacy as that of an ‘Irish Times’, politically-correct social liberal. For a businessman, he failed to spot that the market for such a candidate is already saturated by Michael D. Higgins. Any voter who wants politically-correct, left-liberalism is just going to vote for Higgins anyway, not for Gavin Duffy. Duffy will probably finish last on Saturday.

Joan Freeman doesn’t seem to have the courage of her convictions, and so will probably suffer for this at the polls tomorrow.

Peter Casey is the breath of fresh air that the country needs. He has been the positive revelation of this Presidential election.
