The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door…

1. #TROIKA: Ireland’s international paymasters have given the thumbs-up after their latest quarterly inspection of our bailout progress. The EC, ECB and IMF also gave their approval to plans to split Permanent TSB into good and bad banks, a move welcomed by the bank itself. Here’s the full statements from the government and from the Troika.

2. #COURTS: The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from former Fine Gael TD Liam Cosgrave trying to stop a corruption trial over his actions while a local councillor – clearing the way for a corruption trial. Cosgrave had claimed he could not charged with new offences based on the same evidence used to bring charges against him previously.

3. #CENSUS: The Central Statistics Office has released more data from last year’s Census – confirming Saggart as the country’s fastest growing town, and Laois as the fastest-growing county in the country. Where does your county stand? Fine out here.

4. #NORWAY: People have held public sing-songs in cities across Norway today in a message of defiance to Andres Behring Breivik. In Oslo, up to 40,000 people gathered to sing a children’s song which Breivik claimed was an effort to brainwash the country’s youth.

5. #EWWW: A survey on the cleanliness of handbags has revealed that the average bunch of keys is 33 per cent dirtier than a “clean” surface. While 53 per cent of people regularly disinfect their phones, only 3 per cent of people clean their keys. Lovely.

Are we going soft or what, I’d say we get more sick from the dis-infectant than the dirt. I ate dirt and worms, toddling about the garden in my early years and i am still alive. All this paronia over Germ(ans)!

We will have to go back to eating muck and worms if the germ(ans) get their way.

agreed, i have 18 neices and nephews, they seem to get sick at least once a month, i have 5 brothers and 5 sisters and i honestly cant remember one of us ever missing a school day through illness, too much disinfectant makes it impossible for these kids to build any kind of decent immunity, let that roll in the mud!

There’s a song about that: “clean me keys, clean me phone.” I saw it on that television thing.

Well, this is all solidly proven. We need the germs. Too much bleach lets evil germs flourish. Put down the Dettol wipes, please.
