Driver arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after being clocked at 145 km/h

The arrest was one of a number of enforcement actions taken by gardaí over the bank holiday weekend.

A DRIVER WAS arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after they were clocked driving at 145 km/h in Roscommon yesterday morning.

The arrest was one of a number of enforcement actions taken by gardaí over the course of the bank holiday weekend.

Gardaí say they stopped the car after it was seen speeding on the M6 motorway near Rathpeak at about 10am yesterday morning. The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

An enforcement operation in the Kildare area also detected a number of other vehicles speeding, including one driving at 86 km/h in a 50km/h zone in Prosperous village.

In Kerry, a driver was stopped for careless driving in Killarney on Saturday night before later testing positive for cocaine.

The new drink driving legislation championed by Transport Minister Shane Ross took effect from 26 October, meaning that any driver found to be above the blood alcohol limit will receive a driving ban.

The limit is 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

145.Sounds fast but in old money, it’s just 15 mph over the speed limit. The drinking however is a mortal sin.

What is more interesting is that the offender was caught at 10 a.m. but not one commenter mentioned this detail.

I can advise the readership that the driver arrested was not a serving member of An Garda Síochána.

They are allowed free reign when found to be driving while under the influence.

Usually driven to their home by the Garda conducting the checkpoint.

    Sad but unfortunately the reality.

One rule for them, one for you.

    “ Championed by Shane Ross?”
Is there nothing this man can’t do? Sure didn’t he negotiate a peace deal with North Korea and the rest of the world?
Can’t see this making much difference, the people who drink and drive will probably carry on doing it, Guards on the streets is the only real deterrent and that’s not going to happen because it would cost money. This measure will catch some people who are marginally over the limit and they will be off the road, Ross will tell us that his methods are successful because conviction rates are up.. The regular hard core drink/ drivers will carry on regardless and have the same chances of getting away with it.
