Ben Peat and Ken Peat outside the Parnell Street branch as it re-opened today Laura Hutton/Photocall Ireland

It's back: Peats reopens its doors in Dublin

After 78 years in business, the electronics store closed its 11 branches earlier this month – but today it reopened its Parnell Street branch.

DUBLIN ELECTRICAL CHAIN store Peats World of Electronics has re-opened its doors today, just weeks after it had closed its eleven branches and announced plans to go into liquidiation.

The family-owned company said earlier this week that a “wave of goodwill” from customers and suppliers had allowed it to continue in business.

The flagship Parnell Street store re-opened this morning, selling stock from the stores which closed on 23 April at discounted prices. The store plans to re-establish itself with a lower cost base and a restructured business.

Chairman Ben Peat said it was an “emotional but good day”.

The phones have been hopping and people were queuing around the block well before we officially opened. We’ve been blown away by the positive reaction we’ve had from customers, staff and suppliers. The support we’ve received has been nothing short of phenomenal.

The company hopes that a successful re-launch in Parnell Street will lead to the re-opening of its other stores in Dublin.

“Clearly the Peat’s brand resonates with people and it’s great that we’re still in business after 78 years, and we plan to be around a lot longer,” said Ben Peat.

The Rathmines branch of the store is also due to open shortly. The company has been able to seek a petition to the High Court to enter into examinership, which will allow the business to resume trading.

Why not have speed date flight where everyone moves every few minutes. After the seat belt light is switched off of course.

Could we get the opposite? A chance to veto who can sit beside us based on profile…

For people who hate the idea just opt not to participate but wouldn’t it be great if it meant all the chatty people would seek each other out and leave the book readers, sleepers, thinkers alone

Was at a Salesforce event at September, KLM had presentation about there company and leveraging social media. Unbelievable stuff, they really showed what companies can do when you think different. Well done KLM, keep up the good work.

Like Irene said, it is just an option. Nobody will be forced to select a ‘flight companion’! Remember, there are millions of people out there who would genuinely love this. We all know the type – they have over a thousand facebook friends, they follow anything and everything on Twitter and they’re likely helping G+ simply by logging in. Whether you like it or not people can be quite voyeuristic. That’s the inconvenient truth for you lot who panned it straight away. Social media is a tool for spying and allowing others to spy on us. If any of you ever do fly with KLM, let me know whether you were tempted to tick the box or not. I know where my money is!
Personally, I think KLM have really put a lot of thought into this, and it is something that just might offer further insights to our behaviour with social media. Well done KLM, keep up the good work.
