New handheld devices will help gardaí identify uninsured drivers

A new system will link to a database of uninsured drivers.

GARDAÍ WILL SOON be able to use handheld devices to check whether a vehicle is insured or not.

Insurance companies are currently providing insured and uninsured vehicle lists to the gardaí, according to the Seventh Progress Update report from the Cost of Insurance Working Group which provides detail of the plan.

These lists are based on vehicle licence plate number and insurer name, according to the report.

This new system will in turn link to a database of uninsured drivers which was recommended by the Government’s Cost of Insurance Working Group in January 2017

The new handheld devices are currently being trialled and the first phase of the new plan to tackle uninsured drivers should be complete by the end of the year.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1 this afternoon, Conor Faughnan, Director of Consumer Affairs at AA Ireland, welcomed the establishment of the new database.

“We are told to expect roll-out of this before the end of 2018 which is only six or seven weeks away. So we’re very curious to see how it works.

It will definitely be helpful and it should mean that the noose starts to tighten finally around 150,000 people on Irish roads who are driving uninsured and the rest of us pick up the cost for that.

My mam had a Yorkie-poo (yorkshire terrier x poodle) called Lola. Back in July when Lola was 15 weeks old, my mother had her on lead down at the beach for a walk. The same ritual they had once in the morning and once in the evening. This particular evening, 2 men had 7 ‘hunting dogs’ down at the same beach and none of them on their lead.. The second they saw our Lola, they ran and attacked her. Killed her straight away. Absolutely nothing was done about it. Guards were called to the scene and it has only been forgotten about since..
Laws in this country are ridiculous when it comes to animals. Makes me so angry

Without sounding like a b****, the owner of said dogs is a pure and utter sc*mbag with no sense of respect for people, nevermind dogs.. As sick as that is! He comes into my workplace and my blood boils when I see him but I’ve been warned to say nothing while at work. Thats the only time I’ve come across this man. I do want to call to his house and give him a piece of my mind though but I’m afraid of what I’d do or worse again, what he’d do. Hes just lucky I was on holidays in Vegas at the time it happened. I would’ve been straight down to the beach to him with my veins bursting out through my temple with anger

My little dog, who was on a lead, was attacked on the beach by two wild running dogs, not an owner in sight. One of them bit him right across the back, and they would have killed him only my husband bravely kicked him in the side, and they both ran off. It’s an everyday occurrence, and no one ever takes responsibility.

No fun in seeing that. If you go hunting to see an animal torn to pieces you’ll be sorely disappointed.
If you want to see some death, go fishing.

People go hunting to ride horses. Besides the one or two guys with the bugles, the horse-riding people take no part whatsoever in the ‘hunt’. They just follow it.

Dagda, the only way to describe the difference between hunting and horse riding is that hunting is morr of an endurance test for horse and rider. With a hunt, hounds pick up a scent and follow it followed by riders. Now riders will follow the hounds over unknown natural obstacles for couple of miles until the fox runs to ground. An unknown hunt lik this through the countryside cannot be simulated. Thats the difference between hunting and horse riding.

Because if you go horse riding you don’t get to go cross country jump walls etc. Thing about this is it was a drag hunt do they don’t hunt animals they are meant to chase a scent which has been laid out by a jogger who runs dragging a bag with the scent behind them so this family are well within their rights to be extremely angry, the hunt should not have entered the property and I am seriously worried as to why the hounds attacked the family dog this is really unusual for a pack of hounds. I do wonder if the dog was on the property or ran out onto the road, I have had my horse nearly attacked by dogs as we ride by gateways where the dog runs out onto the road, not to say this dog would.be able to do that just wondering if it actually was on the property or on the road. Not all hunts are bad, not all are so disrespectful it’s just a few which give the rest a bad name

If it’s a drag hunt, it’s a totally different issue, completely separate from Fox hunting(barbaric).
It would be an issue of dog control.

What a horrible comment to make Kenneth. Am I to assume that you have never had a beloved pet? I’m not sure you would have that opinion IF it were your dog savaged to death unnecessarily. Just for one moment, stop and think… how would YOU feel if it were your pet mauled to death by hounds? The family had no prior notice of the hunt, the hounds (and horses) came onto their property and killed their dog. It’s disgusting and disgraceful that this is allowed to happen in this day and age.

Exact same thing happened my cat. My cat was sitting at window of my house one morning meowing to be let inside, next thing I heard a bang against window and two hunting dogs tearing into her. We knew the dogs and who owned them as he was out walking them with obviously no leash but the guards took little or no action. I was traumatised by it but I always wonder what may have happened if it was a small child sitting on the window and not my cat. It later transpired that those same dogs had killed another cat of ours that had gone missing. I understand that people have their hobbies but surely there should be reserves where they can do this instead my driveway!

I regularly run alot of country roads and one of my routes takes me past an area where the local gun club meets each weekend,

Every weekend without fail when they are shooting I see 5-6 pheasants sitting on the road, this road is two fields away from a wood the local gun club frequent and every time they are on the road you can always hearing gun shots off in the distance,.

Clearly these animals are in fear and very clearly they are not stupid, they are smart enough to know that the road means safety for them.

And just a word of warning if you are confronted by a pack of dogs with or without a hunt attached, do not pick up a little dog as you will become the target.

I am not a member of any organisation one way or the other. I have said before that hunts are now the preserve of assistant bank managers and pox doctors clerks and no longer respect their surroundings and in fact many of them get lost and enter lands forbidden to them. This hunting has become an issue of public safety and will have to be curtailed.

What, Rachel? People living in Wicklow should keep their dogs indoors every Wednesday and Sunday in case some out of control dogs venture onto their property? What about private property, and laws about dog control?

What are the laws concerning trespassing. If I’m caught trespassing on a farmers land I can be charged. Does the hunt need permission from the farmers? You can’t control we’re the fox goes therefore you can’t control were the dogs go and were they go the rest will follow so I presume they end up on land as trespassers, am I right or wrong here?

Idiotic statement James. You talk about voluntary participation in a fox hunt? The dog that was killed or the family didn’t participate. The fox didn’t. Neither the hounds or horses that were ridden. In fact the only creatures that had a choice were the pompous, blood hungry murderers all dressed up in their gentry suits! Do don’t go talking about hunting as if its a pastime that doesn’t directly affect anything or anyone else. Hunting should be banned. Now

If you don’t like killing, don’t do it.
    Murder is still illegal, though.

You exist as part of a community. You don’t get to act in a way that you only have to justify to yourself.
Fox hunting, hunting for pleasure is an act of barbarism, abhorrent to any sense of right and wrong.

Ross… Hunting contributes 75 million to the Irish economy every year and plays a part in producing Ireland’s top class horses. Your comment regarding pompous gentry in costumes is quite demeaning of the hard working individuals who make that industry and clearly shows you have not a clue about this industry. Accidents happen, as unfortunate as it is. But considering the wider picture all these comments are quite irrelevant. Another good media story and another annual blood sport debate. A dog is 10000 times more likely to get run over on the road that attacked by hounds.

what difference does a car accident have to do with anything here? People drive cars for all manner of reasons and if a car accident happens the driver is held responsible. Hunting exists just for hunting and if hunting dogs attack and kill a beloved pet, hunting itself is directly responsible; the fact that it is a rare occurence has NOTHING to do with the tragedy of it. Is your analogy stating that the more rare a death, the less serious it is?!!
Show me your statistics that hunting contributes 75 million euro to our economy – i find that hard to believe. Sure horse racing, breeding, etc contribute substantially but they would exist quite fine without hunters ploughing up farmers fields. And if you find my comment about hunters demeaning, well Tough! I find them despicable people who enjoy death of innocent wildlife. Of course I would wish to demean them.
I for one enjoy the blood sport debates as public opinion is evidently swaying massively towards banning this barbaric pastime and it’s only a matter of time before our legislation catches up with our collective civilisation. Enjoy your murderous days while you can Leo – in 50 years time people will view your activities like they view cock fighting and badger baiting today.

This was no accident, Leo. The dogs were out of control. They invaded private property and savaged a pet dog.. Whoever was in charge of them didn’t do his or her job.

It doesn’t matter how rare such an occurrence is; the law says that dogs must be under control at all times, so these “hunters” are breaking the law.

Some dogs from the village once came onto our farm, killed the chickens. Uncle didn’t bat an eyelid, just took the shotgun to them. It’s not an answer, after all the dogs who do the killing are as much victims as those who die, but you can’t readily shoot the owners.

That being said, I’ve heard countless horror stories of feckless dog owners in Wicklow and Wexford. Civil cases for emotional trauma would hit them in the pocket, and a possible restraining order in cases of thuggish behaviour might well leave them unable to walk the main street, given the size of most places back home.
