ALCOHOL ADS ON social media sites can increase young adults’ desire to drink if the ads contain pro-drinking comments from users.
According to new research in the current issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, social media users who view alcohol ads are also more likely to “Like” or “Share” an ad when it has pro-drinking comments, the new study shows.
“There is more information on social media than just a post or a message. We are exposed to how other users respond to a post, and it is those responses that can influence your desire to drink,” says Dr Jonathan Noel, the study’s lead author.
“Our findings suggest that comments left by other social media users may either reinforce or negate the message from a post,” he added.
With hundreds of corporate-sponsored alcohol ads on social media sites (with millions of Likes and Shares), plus millions of views of alcohol ads on YouTube, companies have expanded platforms to reach young consumers.
The study involved 120 young adults, ages 21 to 24, living in the United States. Each viewed four online ads (actual beer advertisements posted on Facebook).
The researchers then chose certain comments that would appear with the ads — either pro-drinking comments that had accompanied that ad online or anti-drinking comments. The ads also varied on whether there were a high number of likes, shares, or comments or a low number.
After the participants viewed each advertisement, they were asked whether they thought the ad would increase the desire to drink. The participants also said whether they would like or share the ad they viewed. They received $10 for participating.
The lowest desire to drink was found after participants were exposed to ads with anti-drinking comments plus a high user engagement.Further, compared with the ads with anti-drinking comments, ads with pro-drinking comments left participants more than twice as likely to say they would like or share the ad.
“It’s fascinating really. Not only might these comments influence the desire to drink, but they also can increase the reach and virality of the original message,” said Dr Noel.
The report found:
Heavy alcohol users and those who are alcohol dependent may be the most susceptible to the potential effects of pro-drinking comments. The ads, coupled with positive comments about drinking, may serve as alcohol cues and an increased desire to drink after exposure to alcohol cues may predict relapse after treatment for alcoholism.

@Anna Anna: Anna, basic evolutionary biology dictates that most mutations (including in the human genome) do absolutely nothing, good or bad. Very rarely, they do something, and that can either be beneficial to the organism (or virus) or it might harm it.
I’m not exactly sure why you keep using that number 12,700 as if it proves something – the vast majority of mutations are of no consequence, it takes random evolutionary luck for one of them to make a virus more virulent.
To be clear, the evidence that this strain is far more infectious than normal is just preliminary at the minute but still, it’s really pointless to state the number of previous mutations as if that’s an argument for… well… anything.

Yes we all have responsibility, but so do they and they are consistently failing with the supposed most important step to fighting the virus.

Don’t know what they expected. They opened shops and restaurants 3 weeks before the busiest time of the year with the threat of locking down again come Jan and were surprised when things got a bit busy.
I don’t know what the answer is from here on in because the “were all in this together” approach is long gone due to finger pointing and resentment. Those that are going to break rules will just continue to do so. We can only hope that come Jan when the silly season is over we can take an honest look at these blanket lockdowns because people will just congregate with the little bit of freedom then destroying everyone else’s hard work. Smaller communities have been on full lock down since March its getting frustrating at this stage.

I’m sitting in a gastro bar at the moment on Xmas week with 7 people in it,I don’t know what the capacity was or is now but I can imagine it’s about 10 fold at least in this area I’m in. I can hear management on the phone,that’s how quiet it is! Trying to find out what the situation is because fridges full of food and more ordered. To me it seems wrong everywhere I have been not just here has been properly done,masks when u move from ur table etc, and proper distancing. But the powers that be think everywhere is like a rave when alcohol is served. Comments like “our country has a bad history of alcohol” mentioned recently in one of these daily press conferences that are held seems like something that should be put in that movie Wild Mountain Thyme just to watch please the yank. @john: I was in Dublin for the weekend didnt see any of the”wild” scenes some here have mentioned. Was very surprised by how quiet it was even the shops considering it was less then a week to Christmas. I was in 3 different establishments in the city centre for food and drink and never felt uneasy at any time.
Have been to a few Pubs and restaurants over the last few weeks and everywhere the guidelines were being followed impeccably and I have developed any symptoms nor have any of the people that I have been with from 2 weeks ago. Everywhere I look people , bar a small minority, are wearing masks. So why are the numbers going up as quick as after the last lockdown?

The amount of people out drinking on Friday and Saturday night would lead you to believe that every pub in the city was open. And as for the cafés and restaurants – no distancing between outside tables, particularly in one café at the top of South William St and the proprietor of that establishment, was on the news when the last lockdown was called, saying that they wer abiding by the regulations when this was as far from the truth as you can get.

@paulie G: I think we can put the spread down to people ignoring the hand sanitisers in shops. They’re picking stuff up, putting it back and going through racks of clothes. I carry my own sanitiser and I use it before I enter a shop and again when I walk out. And I still continue to wipe my groceries down with alcohol wipes, when I get home as I’m unpacking them. No point in wearing masks if you ignore hand sanitation and social distancing.

The government should shut down the whole country for 2 weeks over christmas. Ban any movement beyond 2 km. Level 5 lockdown, nothing open. Christmas is over hyped commercial opportunism, people are blowing it up too much, anyone abroad shouldnt be coming back this year unless they are essential supply chain workers sea farers and the likes. People working in a bank in london for example wanting to come home from a tier 4 area to Ireland are risking our population. Reported in Irish Times today of a BA flight from Heathrow into Belfast this afternoon with passengers who boarded a bus organised by BA to Dublin….this practice will continue if the Gardai don’t step in. This is probably going to happen at Derry too

Norway, Iceland, Cyprus, Finland, Estonia, Belarus, Denmark, Latvia, Slovakia, Germany, Serbia, Ukraine, Albania, Lithuania, Greece among others have lower mortality rate than Ireland.
Not even counting the likes of Monaco or Greenland or non-european countries…
Its the third wave, that came fast. We are still doing well numbers wise but after Christmas will be a nightmare at this rate.
All anybody can do is follow the correct procedures and remember that wearing a ask and following the rues works most of the time. Not doing so well then you are looking to get ill and or infect others.

So the 7 day average for testing is going up and up, this is a joke and one of the reasons the numbers are going up.
Maybe there should be a cure sought for all this Christmas madness while were at it.
They need to close the border for the north to south if they come to the north then down here it’s just an easy way into here. Only way to contain it.
