GPs hit out at 'inappropriate' reports that doctors will receive up to €450 for abortion services

Reports today suggested that an agreement had been reached over how much doctors would receive for performing terminations.

A LEADING DOCTORS’ group has hit out at reports that GPs will receive fees of up to €450 for providing abortion services.

Reports today suggested that an agreement had been reached between the Irish Medical Organisation and the Department of Health and HSE over how much doctors would receive for performing terminations.

It comes after the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill passed committee stage last week, with the bill set to return to the Dáil for report stage later this month.

However, the National Association of General Practitioners has criticised discussion of a pay structure for doctors who would provide terminations as “inappropriate”.

In a statement this evening, the association’s chief executive Chris Goodey said that there were still a number of questions surrounding the procedure that needed to be resolved.

“It is more important that discussions around safe and effective provision of services, rather than fees, are put in place at this time,” he said.

The association was also critical that it was not involved in discussions about how to provide terminations in a safe and effective manner, adding that it was “imperative” that more engagement with GPs took place.

“GPs should be fully trained and supported to provide a termination of pregnancy service of the highest and safest standards,” Goodey added.

“We must strive for a compassionate, supportive and respectful service that accommodates the needs and beliefs of all stakeholders.”

@Dead Mousche: Yeah, because the cost of a full-term pregnancy is so much cheaper for the tax-payer.

@EvieXVI: the point of the article is how much doctors will be paid for performing an abortion .It is not about comparing the cost of looking after a child until they reach 18.

@Seamus Mac: I wasn’t making an argument for it, I was elaborating on Pauline’s point but whether you like it or not money makes the world go round and is the primary determinate in most peoples lives as to whether or not they can do, well…most things really…I have met (as I’m sure most have) countless families who say they’d love to have more than one or two children but simply can’t afford it, so yeah, it’s a pretty damn big determinant because money ultimately determines your – and your children’s- quality of life. As a rule I have found that those who say “money can’t buy happiness” are usually the people who have it.

Cue exaggerated moral outrage in 3,2,1 go.

The vast majority of ‘terminations’ performed by GPs will amount to little more than the prescription of medication.

I do feel a little sorry for the few that have to go through the surgical abortion though. I’d imagine that’ll be painful but thankfully it’ll only be a few hundred annually.

Hey Eric; don't you go and start feeling any emotion towards the woman that will have a 'surgical abortion' …and as for you 'imagining' that there would be more pain involved,it only goes to show that you really don't know what you're talking about :) get a new hobby ,lad..

Wait I’ve got a great idea, why don’t they create a once a month pill for a MAN to take… then maybe the unwanted pregnancy would be greatly reduced! But if my memory serves me correctly, I dooo believe they did come up with a male version of the pill. But get this ladies it was proven to be bad in some minor ways to their health, whereas for women to take the pill! Well it can cause some serious health issues like cancer stroke stress heart attack depression anxiety ect ect ect… .

@Aine O Connor: I suppose you could say “what woman would you believe that was taking the pill” also with the amount of men out there genuinely surprised to find out they have gotten someone pregnant but it is always best not to avoid taking responsibility on oneself and insisting on a condom (have you heard of those?) unless you are in a longer living trusting relationship with someone you intend to have children with. There is also the STDs issue relating to one night stands or short term relationships of course.

Who falls for this? It’s such a sham. It makes me sick . . .honestly. We have Kate O Connell suggesting that a pregnant woman isn’t carrying a life but a pregnancy. . . Is she for real? It’s just an effort to sanitised the taking of a life so we can sit a little more comfortably with ourselves and not face the harsh reality that abortion is the killing of an unborn child.

At least you know what your property and water charges are going towards especially if you voted against abortion, you still end up paying for that as some oulde poor sod is lying on a trolley dying in a hallway of a hospital… As this government has no opposition in the Dail except for the small parties, isn’t Ireland great…
