The Daily Fix: Sunday

Back and forth on the treaty debate, pregnant girl turned away from Munster school and a round up of the rest of the day’s news…

EVERY EVENING,  TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of all the day’s main news, as well as the bits and pieces you may have missed along the way.

  • The Finance Minister Michael Noonan has dismissed comments by an IMF spokesperson reported in an article in the Sunday Times today which said that there was no reason why Ireland could not apply for money from the IMF when the current bailout ends in 2013. Noonan said an €800bn EU fund will be the only possible source of funds for Ireland, and that a No vote in the referendum will mean that this fund will be inaccessible.
  • Meanwhile a new opinion poll published in today’s Sunday Business Post shows that Irish voters are set to back the new fiscal treaty in next month’s referendum, although the gap between the Yes and No votes has narrowed slightly.
  • It emerged today that a school in Munster has been criticised by the Ombudsman for Children Emily Logan after it refused a 16-year-old girl admission because she was pregnant, and then again because she had become a single mother. A Department of Education investigation has been advised.
  • A British doctor who was kidnapped in Pakistan in January has been found dead – its believed he was beheaded. The International Committee of the Red Cross has confirmed that Khalil Rasjed Dale, a 60-year-old health programme manager, was found by police in southwest Pakistan today.
  • Today saw Fianna Fáil make their annual visit to Arbour Hill for their 1916 Rising Commemoration, which gave us a thoroughly enjoyable Pic of the Day. Meanwhile Fianna Fáil leader said today that he is against the party ever going into coalition with Sinn Féin. We asked your opinion in today’s poll.
  • Fr Martin McVeigh, the priest who showed indecent images to a group of parents during a meeting last months has asked his parishioners to accept his innocence in the matter. He’s been granted permission by Cardinal Seán Brady to take a leave of absence.
  • Smirking, measles and morons… it’s the week in quotes.
  • TheJournal.ie spoke to the Irish Centre for Talented Youth to debunk some of the myths surrounding exceptionally-abled children and young people in Ireland.
  • Right about now 5,000 runners are limbering up for the first ever Samsung Run Dublin @ Night 10k. Starting and finishing at Trinity College runners from 31 countries and ranging in age from 16 to 71 are taking part. Let’s hope the rain eases off! Here’s the route:

I really enjoyed that. Love seeing pictures of 1940′s Ireland as that’s the decade my parents were born into and it’s a few second glimpse into that world.

I could watch many hours straight of footage like that from that period, but where would you get it? RTE is one of the oldest continuously operating public service broadcasters in the world but it’s TV station didn’t launch 1962 and so they can;t have anything substantial from that 40′s period I assume?

I remember my mother wearing a head scarf when we were kids and she was only in her 30′s.

I’m sure some people reading this remember (like the footage of St Stephen’s Green) the making of slides on Dublin streets great fun for the us kids but not great for cyclists or older people.
    Have a great XMas
