Surf's up! Government announces plans to open Ireland's first surfing centre of excellence

Fáilte Ireland have provided €1m in funding to open the centre on Strandhill promenade.

A NEW NATIONAL surf centre is set to be developed in Sligo, the Government has announced.

The centre, which will be located on Strandhill promenade, will act as a modern fit-for-purpose facility for locals and tourists eager to catch some waves along the west coast.

It will comprise of a facility that will serve as a National Centre of Excellence for surfing in Ireland, and will be a key focal point in for activities on the Wild Atlantic Way.

An interpretative element telling the history of surfing in Strandhill and Sligo will also feature at the centre, where there will also be an information hub and visitor focal point for the area.

Safety provision for beach users and surfers will be provided for surfers, with a rescue facility set to monitor beach usage and support surf schools and the surf club.

This morning, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced funding of just over €1m from Fáilte Ireland to Sligo County Council for the development of the centre.

The project was also awarded €615k funding under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund announced earlier today.

“Strandhill is already a very popular destination thanks to its wonderful location, great beaches and of course its secret weapon, the waves that have become so popular with locals and visitors alike,” the Taoiseach said.

“I am delighted to be announcing this significant funding for the development of the new Strandhill Surf Centre, which I have no doubt will make this coastal town even more popular in the years ahead.”

Fáilte Ireland CEO Paul Kelly added that the development the centre would mark a new departure and enhance the tourism potential of the local area.

With all that’s going on, you’d have to say that Europe is in a far worse state than it was 20 years ago. And the outlook ain’t rosy.

@ Rui is making the point that the threat of terrorism was far more dangerous in the 1970s then now … Terrorism is at it lowest level at present.
    So don’t believe the hype!

@Paul Devlin: There’s a group that have done stuff like this, but they are not Anarchist. Anarchists wouldn’t do this. There was a bogus group alright a few years ago, but they were denounced by every Anarchist group in Europe. Guys like Bader Meinhoff or Red Brigade would do this carry on though.
