A scene from 1949's Neptune's Daughter Youtube/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Christmas FM won't be playing 'Baby It's Cold Outside' this year

A radio station in Cleveland, Ohio pulled the Christmas classic from its playlist this weekend after listeners complained about the song’s lyrics.

CHRISTMAS FM HAS said that it will not play the song ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ after a decision was taken last year to remove the Christmas classic from its playlist.

The song, which has been covered by numerous artists since the original 1949 version, has come under scrutiny in recent years for its lyrics in which a man tries to persuade his female guest to stay the night and avoid bad weather.

This weekend, a radio station in Cleveland, Ohio made headlines after it pulled the Christmas classic from its playlist following complaints from listeners.

Christmas FM co-founder Garvan Rigby told TheJournal.ie that the song’s lyrics “are of a different era.”

The song – which was written by Frank Loesser in 1944 – was originally recorded for the 1949 film Neptune’s Daughter and went on to win a Best Original Song Oscar.

In the song, most often performed as a duet, the male singer tries to persuade the female singer to stay and have another drink and spend the night:

“I’ve gotta get home (but baby, you’d freeze out there)

Say lend me a coat (it’s up to your knees out there).”

“Say what’s in this drink? (No cabs to be had out there),”, sung by the woman, is arguably the song’s most controversial lyric.

‘It didn’t resonate with listeners’

According to the BBC, reporting on the Cleveland radio station’s decision to pull the song, “listeners said the song was inappropriate and at odds with the #MeToo movement.”

The #MeToo movement, which began in October 2017, has campaigned against sexual harassment and assault and started soon after the alleged sexual assault allegations were made against American film producer Harvey Weinstein.

Glenn Anderson, a host at the Star 102 station in Cleveland, described the lyrics as “manipulative and wrong”.

A poll on the station’s Facebook page, however, showed that a majority of those who responded did not want the song banned.

‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ has been performed by, among others, Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton as well as Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Christmas FM’s Rigby has said that “although the song has been covered many times…we didn’t think this particular song resonated with our listeners, some of whom had voiced similar concerns.”

“It wasn’t a popular song with listeners so we made way for some new songs to the playlist.”

It’s not like Mariah Carey or Wham. It didn’t resonate with the listeners themselves.

Rigby has said that the station would be open to playing an updated or “more progressive” version of ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’, however, in the future.

Christmas FM runs across the month of December.

The republicans who support this pro bill are the very same people who vote against social welfare, free education and free healthcare. This makes them pro-birth and definitely not pro-life.

@Laura Grimes: I think they should be renamed pro birthers not pro lifers . They want to force the woman to carry the baby until birth regardless of the cause of conception but don’t care what happens to it once it’s born, unless the mother is poor, then it’s a drain on society and the mother is castigated for irresponsibly bringing a child into the world that she can’t afford to rear, never mind that she may have had no control over its conception.

Let’s be blunt, I’ve often seen people oppose abortions simply because they want a better selection of children to adopt. They object to a lack of choices. Lately one prominent anti-abortion campaigner has been fretting that “people will abort on a whim based on eye colour or gender”. I read that & genuinely wondered if he thought adoptive parents rejected children on this basis. Maybe they really do.

“Approximately 85 to 90% of people who obtain an abortion in Texas are at least six weeks into pregnancy, meaning this law would prohibit nearly all abortions in the state,” ACLU said.

And 100% of people who obtain an abortion are female.

This is a women’s issue – yet apparently the word ‘woman’ is verboten these days when it comes to discussing pregnancy or abortion.

There is also resent scientific research that has shown slight variations in the chromosomes of some transgender people. You are also not allowing for inter sex people who may have both male and female reproductive organs and both xx and xy chromosomes or a combination of both.
There are more intersex people born into this world than they are people with naturally red hair born into this world. So it is not as rare as you might think. Many intersex people can and do get pregnant.

Every civilization throughout the history of mankind has recognised more than two genders. For example the native American Indians recognised up to five different genders. The two spirited people amd so on.
For the life me I cannot understand why people living in contemporary times are still slaves to the religious superstition when it comes to gender and refuse to accept scientific fact and a person’s own ability to know their own gender.
No child needs to be told their own gender. They know instinctively. Trans children are no different. The only difference is that trans children have it shoved down their throats that they are something they are not.

What has whether or not trans men getting testicular cancer got to do with anything? If a “biological male” is born without testicles does that make him any less of a man? The reproductive organs of transgender people do not define whether they are male or female. You are ignoring chromosomes and brain structure that I mentioned above as the makeup of some transgender people’s chromosomes and brain structure doesn’t suit your narrative.
Although rare a true hermaphrodite can become pregnant. But they have both male and female functioning reproductive organs! There is much more to defining male and female then reproductive organs. Chromosomes……… are also involved. Are you saying that transgender man only think they are man until such time as the science becomes definitive?

You are assuming that somebody who was assigned a gender at birth based on visible reproductive organs dictates their sex. But new scientific research as I have explained above cast doubt on this in relation to transgender people. That is not bending the science. It is a simply stating a scientific fact. Why should transgender people in Contemporary times be forced to wait until science proves what they already know themselves to be and what every civilization throughout the history of mankind has acknowledged up until religion dictate otherwise?

That is a scientific FACT. Your acceptance of that scientific fact is not a requirement for that scientific fact to be a scientific fact.
You people used to point to chromosomes to define biological sex. But now you’re saying chromosomes have nothing to do with defining biological sex as variations in the chromosomes of transgender people is now coming to light. You are completely missing the point I’m making
You are assuming that reproductive organs defines a biological male or a biological female when it comes to transgender people. You are ignoring the science that is in the process of proving biological sex is not defined solely on one’s reproductive organs. That is the point I am making. If chromosomes and brain structure defines whether a transgender person is male or female you cannot say that a “male” with a womb cannot get pregnant. It is what defines male or female in transgender people is what i am talking about. This emerging science will changes how we define what is male and female. Chromosomes, brain structure or reproductive organs? If it is chromosomes then it is possible for a transgender male to have a womb.

@Cookie: I am not against abortion. I believe that by women ignoring the rights of the child and that of the father you weaken your case for rights to abortion when you say it is solely a woman’s issue. I believe it is mainly a Parental issue, i.e. If at least one parent can prove that they have the means and the skills to protect the rights of the child, then the child should be born. I understand there would be serious issues around women’s ‘ rights to their bodies’ against other rights. A mother may decide she can’t have the child but a ‘willing’ father should not be denied that right. Denying the ‘fathers’ the right to have a say in the birth of their children and / or excluding, say, the father’s name from a birth cert is detrimental to all. By excluding men, you make it all about women’s rights, when there are 3 parties involved and you exclude their rights. You are also taking on the ‘full blame’ of women aborting children, when it should be the responsibility of the couple. Of course there are obvious exceptions. I am hopeful that the new law in Texas is the beginning of the end for right wing Christian views on abortion. Hopefully it will make people sit up and act and reinstigate Roe v Wade

Much like Ireland for so long, women, who can, will travel out of state. Women who can’t travel either because of financial or other constraints, in some instances the very reasons they don’t want to be pregnant, will be most adversely affected by this. Some will find less safe means of ending their pregnancy. Banning abortions has never in the history of abortion stopped abortions, it simply prevents safe, legal, medically supported abortions.

Bizarre to see in a modern western country along with their death penalty and stance on gun ownership, the red states in the US seem to have more in common with the likes of the Taliban than they’d care to admit.

The Taliban are famous for lots of guns, Toyota pick-ups and justifying cruelty because of religion – plenty of Americans are famous for those things too, except they use Ford, Chevy and GMC pick-ups.

If the Supreme Court doesn’t shut this abomination of law down it will severely backfire.

If this type of law is permitted (where citizens can sue people that facilitate an abortion) what’s to stop other States implementing a similar law relating to gun crime for example?

    @Adrian O’Donnell: That’s precisely my point.

Allowing this type law to stand means any State can essentially empower their citizens to sue to force their opinions.

They dont need to win. They just need to make it impossible for gun stores (for example) to operate.

The natural progression of this removes a lot of power from the Federal System. Yes, the court is currently a right wing wet dream but they’re not stupid. They surely have to see how this could play out.

@Tricia G: This is absolutely terrifying! real Handmaids Tale territory. This is about so much more than the abortion debate. Imagine that you are dealing privately with matters of conscience or a personal tragedy, and because some stranger gets wind of it and disagrees , they can sue you or anyone aiding you. Its crazy. If the law is upheld , how long before other areas of an individuals life are going to be held up to litigation from all and sundry. ????

Alan is somewhat correct in that the Democrats have their fair share in screwing up (look at California and LA in particular for a great example), though I don’t think the differences are all simply cosmetic and certainly aren’t inconsequential.
