Absolutely disgraceful the way our TDs and Senators, who are OUR elected representatives are being mistreated by this Government…can’t wait for the next election to vote out FG and Labour.

I would say a new political party will emerge…but also remember, FF at least showed democracy by allowing their TDs vote on the abortion bill in the Dail, FG and Labour dictated to their TDs that they must vote yes, it makes a mockery of democracy.

I’m a bit confused Ciara. You seem to forget that FF caused the economic mess that we’re in. They were in league with greedy developers and bankers, rezoned green belt which led to urban sprawl, congestion and pollution, sold our neutrality, ignored referendum results and just reran them and gave away billions of our money to Shell (that’ll be an interesting public inquiry eventually).

The only reason that they gave a free vote was to stop the party splitting. Even then, the merit of a free vote in this instance was questionable. The people had spoken twice and so, in effect, FF members had a free vote on whether to implement the will of the people or not! That is an affront to democracy, not a defence of it.

    Tom Lewis,
Relinquishing your right to vote is an easy answer but it will play right into their hands because only a handful of people will decide the result of the elections.

We need to do somethig about this slide into group thinking. We are human beings not the BORG.
First thing is to allow freedom of thought and on matters of conscience free voting.

Isn’t it illegal to dismiss a person from their job because of their religion, gender, sexual orientation, or political views?

It’s a pity the rest of the TDs don’t feel totally isolated and powerless like this guy. The public feel it every day of the week 24/7. The one difference is the public have to pay for that feeling by their taxes and sacrifices every time — this guy is lucky.

    Silly red thumbs too.

Let’s try to keep the debate free from ridiculous hyperbole. There are plenty of things to criticise the government about; I’m just saying that it’s dopey to compare our inept, clientilist political system and its parochial political class to a dictatorship. The type of democracy that they embody is the one that many people vote for.

I would favour direct democracy and have worked towards that end in different ways for over 15 years. It’s not good enough to just make trite comments.

The purpose of this particular use of hyperbole is to emphasis where the concept of the all-powerful cabinet or Taoiseach’s office could eventually lead if there is not a serious reform of the democratic process in our Dail to allow true open debate and Dail based contribution to the formation of legislation and regulations.

Typical of Fine Gael! Bet none of his buddies stuck up for him. Quick to jump into his shoes! I can’t wait to kick this lot to the kerb in the next election. They don’t even have loyalty to their colleagues. This was obviously a vengeful move designed to punish Denis Naughten for having a mind of his own. The ones who do well in this government are those who are Enda Kenny’s lap dogs, but they’ll be the ones who’ll feel the people’s ire in the next election. As for Labour-hopefully they’ll be gone completely, but not before they’ve helped to ruin the country completely!!

Absolutely disgraceful action by both the committee chairperson and the Dail. TD Naughton is one of the only honest politicians to grace the government blocks. It is a sad day and a staunch reminder that the “big boys” will not let “truth out” and keep everything in and behind closed doors. It is should not be long before we all should put forward Denis Naughton for Taoiseach!!
