Photos: This stunning new book showcases Dublin's beauty from the air

The book combines landmarks and landscapes from both city and county.

CROKE PARK, TRINITY College Dublin, the Samuel Beckett Bridge – these are all recognisable Dublin landmarks.

Those, along with a number of other iconic Dublin locations, have been captured from the sky by a Cork photographer.

Ever since his youth, aerial photographer Dennis Horgan has been photographing his native county and his love of aviation last year combined into a new book, Cork from the Air.

Following the Cork project, Horgan set upon the task of capturing Dublin, as is seen in his new book, Dublin from the Air.

But why Dublin? Well, Horgan said it was the next obvious choice.

“It’s the biggest city and it’s the next obvious project for it. I have a good few clients in Dublin and one of them is Dublin Port, I do a lot of photography for them. I kind of said to them, ‘Why don’t we do this?’” Horgan said.

In all, it took 18 months and 16 flights, which were flown by the National Flight Centre crew, to capture all the photographs needed for the book.

“We had to do it when the weather was right and there were lots of times that we couldn’t do it because the weather was wrong, so it took a while. The weather is always the problem,” Horgan said.

It wasn’t just the weather that proved an issue at times, the density of Dublin also came into the equation.

“It’s a lovely county, but it’s not as big as Cork is in terms of the land size. You can fly Dublin from the north to the south in about 15 minutes,” he said.

“There are so many buildings in the middle of Dublin, Kilmainham Goal is very near the Royal Hospital in terms of flying. So, it’s a bit hectic when you’re doing it. Cork is much easier because things are much further apart.”

Despite minor obstacles, Horgan has complied a book full of spectacular aerial shots of Dublin.

Dublin from the Air is available to purchase at www.dublinfromtheair.com.

Really sick of everyone, at every opportunity, having a go at Dublin. The amount of resentment in this country is astounding.

@ED: Dublin takes a lot of stick from folk, but in fairness we (I’m a dub) take the sizable chunk of the budget and have the largest say in how things are done, there’s always going to be resentment against the authoritative figure. But, I’d like to see any other place take on the mantle and put up with the amount of problems that comes with being the largest town in the land also. Which is exactly why you hear the same people say what a dump Dublin is. The fact is, any other town that took on Dublins problems would easily fall asunder.

You’re blaming people for being bias toward their own county as your in the middle of doing it yourself, sigh.

Ireland in general from the air is spectacular. I’ll always remember coming on from the USA to Shannon. The west coast in full summer bloom I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as pretty. @European Bob: they should knock town those bloody towers. The fact two chimneys are iconic landmarks in Dublin says it all really. Anywhere else would have demolished them years ago. Parisians weren’t overly fond of the Eiffel Tower. Imagine what they’d think about the Poolbeg monstrosities. Dublin has very little vision for itself.

The sandy area to the south of the Liffey should be reclaimed from the sea to facilitate social housing and an industrial park it would also facilitate the building of a motorway with a underground tunnel to connect the south side of Dublin to the North side exiting at Fairview with a link to the Port Tunnel. A new bore could be done to build a railway line parallel to the Port tunnel with an onward link to Dublin airport ( this could be an automated train like a bidder version of the automated trains used at Dubai international airport to link the three terminals there).
