A GARDA INVESTIGATION has been launched after a Fine Gael TD’s constituency office was daubed in anti-abortion graffiti overnight.
The attack on Tony McLoughlin’s Sligo office came after abortion legislation passed in the Seanad yesterday, paving the way for the legalisation of the termination of pregnancies in Ireland.
Staff at McLoughlin’s office arrived to work this morning find the exterior of the building covered in anti-abortion slogans, including “scumbags”, “Fine Gael killers”, and “Herod’s killers”, as well as urine and faeces.
Speaking to TheJournal.ie, McLoughlin hit out at those responsible and called on them to respect the passing of May’s landmark referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment.
“It’s very very disappointing to see it,” he said. “People had their say and there was a referendum. The people have spoken and you have to respect that.”
McLoughlin also commended gardaí for their response to the incident, while a garda spokeswoman confirmed investigations into the incident were ongoing.
“Gardai are investigating criminal damage to an office on John Street, Sligo that is believed to have happened overnight [on] Friday 14 December 2018,” a statement said.
“No arrests have been made and investigations are on going.”

@samstheman: vote my way? I think you will find they didn’t vote the same way as 66% of the population. And don’t start saying it’s only a small minority, there are a lot of people on here that still can’t accept the result of a democratic vote.
@samstheman: I’m calm, I have my trousers firmly on. I don’t think they all want to but I’m just looking at the tactics of the no side over the last year, putting up graphic images, standing outside clinics and subjecting women who are going through arguably the most difficult time in their lives to the most disgusting harassment. Nobody from the “noble” part of the no side stepped in and said this may be too much. So yes I’m going to go ahead and assume they all have a pretty bleak performance sheet in tact and how to conduct a campaign

@samstheman: correct. Criminal behaviour. I’m sure the vast majority of no voters would agree. Yes, to be frank, I do feel betrayed by politicians on a whole range of issues re abortion but it doesnt justify this behaviour.
I can see more hairy situations coming down the line when actual abortion services start operating in Ireland. I hope legislators are doing everything to insure security and privacy for those who avail of these services.
Thats the disgraceful status of our politicians these days. Its unfortunate but they brought it on themselves, and its not just abortion, its everything.

yeah I agree it`s very disappointing that people should deface and vandalise property like this, it happens every day, for all sorts of reasons including burglary. It`s a lot more `disappointing`that representatives in Dail Eireann should be claiming credit, for and tweeting about how great it is to be introducing unrestricted abortion to the country, couldn`t they at least keep quiet??

You might want to take a second look at those tweets though; there’s plenty of restriction after 12 weeks and the 12 week limit is itself a restriction.

It was abortion that split America into two camps and destroyed the sense of American unity. That is still playing out.
Abortion is not an individual woman’s rights issue because a significant part of society (M & F) does not accept that.
My personal view is that a woman who does not want a child should give it away – not kill it.
He’s the one guy that acted out. Unfortunately, there are probably thousands of people around the country thinking of doing the same thing, but they didn’t act it out. And its all our disgraceful incompetent idiotic self serving politicians faults.
