Hunt for survivors as Indonesian tsunami death toll climbs to 373

The powerful tsunami struck without any warning on Saturday night,

LAST UPDATE | 24 Dec 2018

DOZENS OF BODY bags were hauled away from buildings flattened by Indonesia’s volcano-triggered tsunami, as the death toll climbed to 373 and search teams pushed on with the grim hunt for corpses.

Rescue teams used their bare hands, diggers and other heavy equipment to haul debris from the stricken area around the Sunda Strait, as thousands were evacuated to higher ground.

The powerful tsunami struck without any warning on Saturday night, sweeping over popular beaches of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java and inundating tourist hotels and coastal settlements.

Some 1,459 people were injured with another 128 missing, disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

“The lack of a tsunami early warning system caused a lot of victims because people did not have the time to evacuate,” he said.

Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the wave that left a tangled mess of corrugated steel roofing, timber and rubble at Carita beach, a popular spot for day-trippers on the west coast of Java.

”The military and police are searching the ruins to see if we can find more victims,” said Dody Ruswandi, a senior official at the disaster agency, adding that the rescue effort was likely to last a week.

In devastated Sukarame village, Sunarti waded through knee-deep water as she searched for belongings outside her destroyed house — and waited for aid to arrive.

“There’s been no help at all so far,” the 61-year-told AFP from the flattened hamlet.

“Some people are starving.”

Indonesian president Joko Widodo visited the area today.

It was the third major natural disaster to strike Indonesia in the space of six months, following a series of powerful earthquakes on the island of Lombok in July and August and a quake-tsunami in September that killed around 2,200 people in Palu on Sulawesi island, with thousands more missing and presumed dead.

The vast archipelago nation is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth due to its position straddling the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide.

Experts say Saturday’s tsunami was likely triggered by a massive underwater landslide following an eruption of the Anak Krakatoa volcano in the Sunda Strait.

Unlike those caused by earthquakes, which trigger alert systems, such tsunamis give authorities very little time to warn residents of the impending threat.

“It happened very quickly,” said survivor Ade Junaedi.

“I was chatting with a guest at our place when my wife opened the door and she suddenly screamed in panic. I thought there was a fire, but when I walked to the door I saw the water coming.”

Richard Teeuw, a geohazard expert from the University of Portsmouth in England, said the eruption and landslide may well have destabilised the volcano, heightening the risk of another tsunami.

“The likelihood of further tsunamis in the Sunda Strait will remain high while Anak Krakatoa volcano is going through its current active phase because that might trigger further submarine landslides,” Teeuw said.

Dramatic video posted on social media showed a wall of water suddenly crashing into a concert by pop group “Seventeen” — hurling band members off the stage and then flooding into the audience.

Two band members were killed along with its manager, while three others, including the lead singer’s wife, are missing.

Front man Riefian Fajarsyah posted a picture online of he and his wife kissing in Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

“Today is your birthday — I want wish you a happy birthday in person. Come home soon, honey,” he wrote in the caption of the photo, which was posted Sunday.

Anak Krakatoa, which forms a small island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, emerged around 1928 in the crater left by Krakatoa, whose massive eruption in 1883 killed at least 36,000 people and affected global weather patterns for years.

@ Gary Brandon, because when the main stream media actually to looks in detail at these stories they realise there’s more fiction than truth in them. Remember these are professional journalist not a collective of cranks and conspiracy theorists…

Hi Cliodhna, I used this in the headline as it is unusual to have a montessori in these lists. We get this information on a monthly basis and this is the first time I’ve seen one as having received an enforcement order. Also, it demonstrates that is not just restaurants and take-aways that can be given enforcement orders, which is useful information for both the public and business owners.
    Hope that explains things,

@Tom Barry Yeah I do forget that Mainstream Media and what they report is always right. I must believe everything the Media tell me and do as my Government says because they are always right.

When the facts are there and then the Government pay people and doctors to come out against the truth like it has always been you get morons like you who actually then support everything and anything they say. If GMO crops are so safe why do the people who spray them where full protective suits and breathing apparatus? Its not safe to breathe in but it must be safe to ingest and let linger in your system.

And also on the term “Professional Journalist” what makes them so? Just because they write things in mainstream media makes them professional? Its always easier to believe what is in front of you instead of doing proper research yourself I suppose and the Fluoride that is mellowing you out makes you more susceptible to the bull that they feed you everyday so in part I cannot blame you for following the Heard.

You are just proof of exactly what the Governments have been perfecting for years and it seems to have worked well.

Or maybe its because you do not actually want to know the truth about what you actually consume and are just happy to ignore the fact that you are being poisoned everyday. Either way its up to you to do your own research. And if your research consists of FOX News and the likes well then you keep on being a sheep. :)

    From Wikipedia:

    Cancer

Reviews have found no association between aspartame and cancer. These reviews have looked at numerous carcinogenicity studies in animals, epidemiologic studies in humans, as well as in vitro genotoxicity studies. These studies have found no significant evidence that aspartame causes cancer in animals, damages the genome, or causes cancer in humans at doses currently used.[7][36][39] This position is supported by multiple regulatory agencies like the FDA[53] and EFSA as well as scientific bodies such as the National Cancer Institute.[45]

Concern about possible carcinogenic properties of aspartame was originally raised and popularized in the mainstream media by John Olney in the 1970s and again in 1996 by suggesting that aspartame may be related to brain tumors. Reviews have found that these concerns were flawed, due to reliance on the ecological fallacy[54] and the purported mechanism of causing tumors being unlikely to actually cause cancer. Independent agencies such as the FDA and National Cancer Institute have reanalyzed multiple studies based on these worries and found no association between aspartame and brain cancer.[39]

As discussed in the article on controversies around aspartame, the Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the European Ramazzini Foundation of Oncology and Environmental Sciences released several studies which claimed that aspartame can increase several malignancies in rodents, concluding that aspartame is a potential carcinogen at normal dietary doses.[7] The EFSA[55] and the FDA[53] discounted the study results and found no reason to revise their previously established acceptable daily intake levels for aspartame.
