Thanks David. The article left out that little detail – the location.

@Alan Watts: no funds at all. They bought the fire engines and raise the operational costs through collections ?

Do the firemen get paid for each job they go out on? Just asking as I don’t know!

@Whingy McWhingy: ok I should of said very little funds, I don’t know the details , we have a booming economy but can’t offer full time services that are needed, like the 500,000 plus in the south east who cant afford to have a heart attack right now

@Alan Watts: Wicklow fire service has a budget of around 5 million a year, current expenditure. The fire fighters are part time and are paid a retainer of at least 7500 per year and then a call out charge ranging from 40-80 euro per hour. Many do work but others are on social welfare, which is not affected regardless of payments received during the year. If they were to go full time then obviously the costs will increase and the local property tax would have to be increased to meet this cost.

@Alan Watts: sounds like you are very informed, can you enlighten a little as to how this was swept under that carpet. I do remember hearing a lot at the time, but please bring me up to date

@The next small thing: this gives a little more clarity. Was wondering where the others were coming from, now I know it’s populist ignorance

They are all volunteers, they get paid a stipend but must work other jobs as well. Also being in call means that many of them have own business as many bosses could not work with them dropping everything for a call…

The retained brigade are not a voluntary organisation. They are generally well funded as regards equipment, and well trained. Where they struggle is getting and maintaining crew

@jamesdecay: I haven’t seen the standard of the wicklow fleet in a while but was also way below the standard of the Dublin stations by quite a few years
