National Transport Authority CEO Anne Graham and James Caffrey, Head of Finance at Go-Ahead Ireland. Julian Behal Photography

Nine Dublin Bus routes to be operated by Go Ahead from Sunday onwards

The change aims to bring about improvements in frequency and service levels.

NINE MORE BUS routes are to be operated by Go-Ahead Ireland instead of Dublin Bus from Sunday onwards.

The routes in question are: 17, 104, 114, 161, 220, 236, 238, 239 and 270.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) said passengers on these routes “will see immediate improvements in frequency and service levels”.

A spokesperson said the development will also free up resources, allowing the NTA to commence a programme of service improvements and modifications on Dublin Bus routes in the coming weeks.

NTA Chief Executive Officer Anne Graham said the changes being introduced this weekend are “part of an overall process of increasing frequency and improving services on about 50 bus routes in Dublin”.

“This process which got under way in September will be the biggest programme of service improvements that the NTA has ever approved,” Graham stated.

Public tendering process

The move will affect customers in areas such as Blackrock, with the 17 and the 104 routes; Dublin 15 with the 220, 236, 238 and 239; and Maynooth and Leixlip with the 26, the 66 and the new 66E.

Fares on these routes will remain unchanged, and the Leap Card, Free Travel Pass, Dublin Bus Rambler tickets and TaxSaver tickets will all be valid to use.

A public tendering process to change the operator of these routes was undertaken by the NTA in 2017. Go-Ahead Ireland was awarded the contract to operate 10% of routes previously operated by Dublin Bus, primarily in the outer Dublin metropolitan area.

More details about the service changes are available here.

When cie was formed , it was to provide a service for the people of Ireland, paid for, by the people of Ireland, through taxation. Outside contractors will have the objective of making money. So the cheapest way to provide the service, however poor a service, will make more money. And less they pay drivers etc, will make more money.

@Frank Emerson: I remember the good old days pre Dublin Bus… Standing for an hour waiting for a bus at a terminus where 3 or 4 other busses would have been abandoned by the crew. Then they’d saunter over onto one of the busses after spending a good long break at the CIE canteen in Marlboro street.
And more often than not the busses used to break down so you had to walk home! Lack of proper maintenance, sure why work hard to ensure all the fleet were mechanically sound.

Ah yes, the “good” old days of CIE

@Frank Emerson: when I was a student we used to get the last bus into town. However I’d say 20% of the time the bus would whiz by at the foxrock church stop (emptyish) as the driver was in a rush to just finish his shift. Still happens I understand – my wife mentioned it happened about 6 months ago to her. Not having come from Dublin the concept was alien to her. I just can’t imagine this behaviour being tolerated by a private employer.

This wasn’t a case of kids with cans in their hands in case that’s speculated.

@Dotty Dunleary: Your comment is utter nonsense. Drivers must have breaks from driving by law. How would you know how long a drivers break was? Were you stalking individual drivers or what? When you refer to the good old days what decade do you mean? Ireland was a much poorer Country 30-40 years ago and Dublin bus has to spend a lot repairing damage from vandalism and abuse of buses by customers. I’ve heard some nasty stories about maintenance practices at well known private bus operators from drivers who left them to work for DB instead because they got fed up with the terrible pay and conditions and being asked to break the law all the time to suit the boss so he could have his big house(s) and fancy cars.
You’re just a troll with no meaningful intelligent comment to add.

Is that your point? Their workplace exists for no reason other than to provide a transport service and their employer has no obligations to them at all? That means that you basically regard bus drivers as slaves with no rights. Even prisoners are provided with toilets.
All workers have rights; even bus drivers. If that’s an inconvenience to you that’s just unfortunate.

You use social media constantly as a self promotional tool and believe employers should have no duty of care or make any accomadations for their staff.
“You don’t like something about your job and expect me to make a reasonable accomadation for the worker like a toilet at a terminus” Oh no little slave wants rights. I’m Mr Capitalist Corporate Psychopath and life is about me getting what I want all the time at the workers expense. Workers having better pay and conditions threatens my ability to fund my millionaire lifestyle. Must quash that idea immediately. “Oh you just don’t like your job then. I’ll have to let you go.”Sure I’ll find some eastern European to drive the bus. There’s always someone who will put up with poor working conditions. History is replete with evidence that influxes of impoverished workers from poor Countries has detrimental affects on workers pay and conditions. No unons, no pensions, just use the slaves and toss them aside when they are fed up with crap pay and conditions you wouldn’t put up with for a second.
I bet you think you’re a Master of the Universe. A big shot. Doesn’t impress me. People like you are repugnent. You’re all tax evaders and cheats who believe the worker should be paying all the taxes and you’re all above that. I bet you’re an arrogant self absorbed ego maniac who must have his say all the time. You probably don’t have much else to do sitting at the boardroom table or sitting in your office with all your photos on the wall behind you. What fancy restaurant will I have dinner at tonight? The worker is a labour resource to be used as much as possible to fund your lavish lifestyle. How do I monetize other human beings needs. You’re obviously a multi millionaire. Good for you. You obviously regard the working class as a bunch of losers to be used by people like you. You look at other human beings and think “how can I exploit you labour to fund my lifestyle or how can I sell some service or product to you at maximum profit with cheapest labour costs.” People like you don’t belong up on some pedestal. Capitalists like you have destroyed the environment for their own greed. You’re not going to be able to take all your money with you. 100 years from now you will be long dead and the World will go like you never existed. But future generations will suffer because of the greed of people just like you. Don’t give a toss about anyone as long as you get what you want from life. Get over yourself and your opinions.

Then the driver training for Go Ahead drivers were by the company charges the driver €2000 if they leave after a certain time,Sure to obtain a bus licence would not cost 2k.
And I wonder how an English company thinks they can scoot around our laws regarding training of employees.
Which states that any training or upslilling an employee undertakes must be paid by the company and the employee should not be out of pocket for said training.

Bad news. Idiots don’t know how to run the business. 17a has been a disgrace since they took over. And they don’t use real time info, so a lot more people will be spending a lot more time in the wet and cold waiting on a bus that’s likely already full…

@Darrell Pickford Monks: they operate on the journey planner app so do use real-time. The journey planner app is more accurate than Dublin Bus.

@Amy Callan: do I really need an app to check real time info???? Dublin buses system of using their website was perfect. And in my experience (I use the bus 30 times per week) Dublin buses real time is as accurate as it gets.

Anyway this is only a minor issue. The real issue is Go Aheads incompetence.

Prepare for a reduction of quality of service as go-ahead took over the 33b route from swords to portrane and it’s a disaster, busses don’t turn up when there suppose to, and RealTime Ireland doesn’t match when the buses turn cause go-ahead don’t run the app, the NTA run it and set the times for busses which go-ahead can’t match

Also the 102 was a great service but when go ahead took over the ruined the service the buses. Some times the bus never shows up or it can be late and because they only have single deckers on the 102 service not every one gets on

They would want to train their drivers a bit better, had a few near misses out in Sallynoggin with them pulling out in front of traffic, and not fully going into the bus stop, must be Dublin bus trained??

So you welcome this NTA quango organisation of so called transport experts? If they are experts how come they keep paying foreign companies millions of Irish taxes to advise what to do? They don’t have a clue what they are doing. Look at the mess they made with the Luas in College green. It was decided almost 20 years ago that section would go underground. The NTA are a disgrace and should be all sacked.

Meanwhile other countries are introducing properly funded free public transport in a bid to encourage use and take vehicles off the roads. We, on the other hand, have to pull a stroke for a political favour and I can guarantee a brown bag or two have been passed over.
