Aldi set to hire 500 new employees this year

The discount supermarket chain plans to open seven new stores in Ireland in 2019.

ALDI HAS ANNOUNCED it will recruit 500 new employees in Ireland this year.

The discount supermarket chain has 137 stores nationwide and plans to open seven new stores this year.

The available roles are at various levels including area manager, store manager, assistant store manager and store assistant.

From February onwards, Aldi will pay all employees at least a living wage of €11.90 per hour.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, said the decision to use a living wage as a base pay for employees is due to their “immense contribution” and “hard work”.

“We plan on hiring 500 new employees this year to join the Aldi team and contribute to our growth and success.

“Our expanding store portfolio, market performance and new Project Fresh stores demand that we continue to future-proof our business with the best people in retail,” Hurley said.

Aldi is investing €60 million in its Project Fresh expansion, which includes a redesign of some stores and aims to increase its selection of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Aldi has a 10.8% share of Ireland’s grocery market, placing it fourth of the five major supermarket chains – behind Dunnes Stores, Tesco and Supervalu, but slightly ahead of Lidl. Aldi is Ireland’s fastest-growing supermarket.

Amazing to think that Aldi and Lidl are among the cheapest in the country for shopping, but can still manage to pay a decent , proper wage in this day and age compared to the flagship supermarkets like Supervalu and Tesco?
Aldi and Lidl deserve our support more than the rest, as they give a lot more back to their employees.

@Pixie McMullen: All while Supervalue pay their staff minimum wage, have some of the highest prices around and then ham up their advertising with the Irish schtick. Dunnes no better either for treating their staff like crap

@Pixie McMullen: the supervalu i worked in starting rate was around €11 and went up to approx €13 hr over a few years. You could get 40 hours there too. Aldi n lidl won’t give more than 20-25 hours from what i hear

Good luck finding people to come off their benefits to earn a little bit more then they’re receiving from the government for doing 0 hours; experience this weekly looking for staff.

@Niall: and no, I am actually not blaming the people who turn down the job; there is no incentive to give up their benefits to earn a little bit more

Fair play to Aldi but they employ a tiny workforce per store it’s probably easy enough for them to pay more to less heads.
