Irish-produced film The Favourite receives 10 Oscar nominations

The nominees are in for the 91st Academy Awards.

THE FAVOURITE, THE period film co-produced by Irish company Element Pictures, is in the running for 10 awards at this year’s Academy Awards.

The film starring Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone sees all three up for top acting gongs, with the film also nominated for awards such as best director, best film and best original screenplay.

Irishman Robbie Ryan has also received the nod for best cinematography for The Favourite.

There was good news for other Irish productions on the Oscars shortlist, with animated short Late Afternoon and live action short Detainment also up for awards.

Screen Ireland chief executive James Hickey said: “Irish film has been a consistent presence at the Academy Awards over the last decade and this is the fifth ceremony in a row where Irish filmmaking talent has been front and centre.”

Roma – the Mexican film directed by Alfonso Cuaron – also has 10 nominations.

Some of the other films in the running for the top awards include Vice (best film, best director, best actor, best supporting actor, best supporting actress), Green Book (film, actor, supporting actor) and A Star is Born (film, actor, actress, supporting actor).

Black panther isn’t even in the top 5 marvel films, never mind Best Film category!

I think Stallone deserved a nomination more for Creed II than the last one

@Bill Clay: Thor Ragnorak is a much better film but the cesspot that is Hollywood has gone all social justice lately.

@Bill Clay: If the Dark Knight, Logan or Winter Soldier can’t get a look in, then it likely won’t be Black Panthers day. But its still interesting that it got a nod if nothing else.
That said its a dismal year, even for oscar bait movies. where is that one genuinely good artsy movie, or the crowdpleaser everyone can agree is good (aside from Maybe Mission Impossible)

@Bill Clay: They’re just trying to appear diverse. The fact that it got nominated for best picture but not best director, actor/actress, supporting actor/actress, cinematography, screenplay, editing or visual effects says it all really.

@The Dude: lads it’s a superhero film. It’s not like it has a chance of winning anyway. it’s there to attract crowds to the awards between the ages of 7-15.

@Cormac Ó Braonáin: or just the regular cinema goer of any and all age groups who can’t afford to go see all the art house films but sees the marvel films because there the popcorn escapism we need in our lives

    The Favourite is amazing.
Laughed my face off at it and could watch it again for the cutting, witty dialogue.

No one’s here talking about how hilarious Nicholas Hoult was it. Hilariously catty

There’s a lot of gunk on that list. Bohemian Rhapsody shouldn’t have been given a look in for an extremely tame portrayal of Freddie Mercury, and same for Black Panther. Note that apart from ‘The Favourite’, it’s not a great year for Ireland at these awards.

Can’t wait to see Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Vice.

@Darren Bates: Vice is pretty poor too in fairness. Nowhere near funny enough to be a comedy and not a huge amount of suspense or action to make it a good drama.

@Darren Bates: it’s nominated because Malek is nominated for best actor that’s the only reason I can think of and I’m shocked they recognised it considering how bad the light on Bryan Singer deservedly is right now. That being said if Rami Melek doesn’t win best actor I’m going to be annoyed weather it was tame compared to Mercury himself it was still the best performance I saw by anyone male or female last year and he practically was Mercury

How can a movie be nominated for best film and the director of it not?

You’ve literally put together one of the best movies from start to end but you don’t get a look in???

Black panther isn’t the superhero movie I’d even have picked to be nominated. It’s to get people watching the ceremony to see if it wins plus in all fairness it was a cultural event for the black community even if it wasn’t the best it was still going to be recognised. I’d have absolutely put Into the Spiderverse in over Black Panther though just a better film simply put but it had the handicap of not just being a superhero film but also an animated one so there was no way
