The London Irish Centre in Camden Google Street View

Government pledges £1m to redevelop London Irish Centre to help 'serve diverse needs' of community

The centre first opened in 1955 to meet the needs of new Irish emigrants to the English capital.

THE IRISH GOVERNMENT has announced it will pledge £1m towards the redevelopment of the London Irish Centre in Camden, London.

Plans to redevelop the building were announced today, and revealed the centre would be redeveloped into a world-class facility following a fundraising campaign last year.

The centre was first opened in 1955 to meet the needs of new Irish emigrants to the English capital, and became a significant social and cultural venue for the Irish community in London.

It has continued to act as a flagship Irish cultural centre and presents a year-round programme of Irish artists, while complementing the work of other organisations in London that help to promote Irish arts and culture.

Announcing the funding at an event at the Barbican in London, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Josepha Madigan paid tribute to the “great heart” of the centre.

“This investment is indicative of our belief that it is critical for us to maintain and build on our strong cultural relations with Britain,” she said.

She added that the new building would reflect “the national self-confidence Ireland possesses” and a desire to promote the interests of Ireland on the world stage

Ah yeah fund developments in other countries that will accommodate the emigrants that contribute nothing to Irish society, only brain drain. Great idea!

    @Earl of Daventry:

How did Ireland fail them? Ireland are the ones who educated these people so they can go and live in another country.

@Earl of Daventry: where did I say they failed Ireland? They contribute nothing, we shouldn’t be giving a cent to any other country with our emigrants.

@Sean Murphy: What a stupid comment, you have the foresight of a brick, a thick brick !!
Firstly it was a ray a light for the thousands of Irish that moved to London for 70 years, a home from home, a little respite in what was a harsh unfriendly city for many Irish newcomers , that little piece of hope.
Its main users were the most vulnerable Irish in London, not the brain drain people who can fend for themselves.
And the major fundraising last year mainly took place in UK and the Irish government contribution is minute considering all the invaluable work the Irish center does to promote Ireland and the Irish people’s.

I’m guessing by now it’s like many other Irish centres from decades ago that have become Gentlemen’s Clubs.

@Cormac Ó Braonáin: Not at all. Its a great place that helps a lot of Irish who fall on hard times in London. You could see any age there & all genders. The centre is doing a lot of work with and for the Irish community in London.

My MA always said spend with in your means. When you do so you can help charities close to your heart. If you have no money and want to help, you can volunteer, which I have done. Our country is over 60 billion in debt, we have our own homeless, nurses that are underpaid and have left for a better life. We have public servants, especially transport where the tail wags the dog. And just regularly we give away the taxpayers coins from my wages to things like this and a lot of others. We give money to third world countries where some is spent on arms, some on food that is intercepted and only a trickle gets down to where it deserves to be. I pay taxes for these decisions and often donated to charities I felt deserved until the expose. When I grew up the word charity meant giving. Giving from volunteering to make money. Not from ceo’s on 100k plus a year to organize the likes of me to pay their wages. I had a nice mam knock at my door today collecting but I apologized that I had.already contributed through my taxes last year as I knew his charity. I rest my case
