The 5 at 5 5 stories, 5 minutes, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie tells you the five things you need to know by 5pm.

1. #FIRE A woman has been arrested after five children died in a house fire in Derbyshire in England in the early hours of this morning. The children, who were aged between five and ten, were asleep upstairs when the fire broke out. A sixth child is receiving treatment in hospital.

2. #FRACKING A preliminary study into the potential environmental and seismic impact of fracking which was commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency has identified that the risk to groundwater is “low and probably manageable”, while other impacts are less well known.

3. #GREECE The leaders of Greece’s second and third-largest parties are meeting today in a last ditch effort to form a government. Unless they can come to an agreement it is almost certain the country will face a second general election.

4. #REFERENDUM The Government is being accused of distributing “deliberately misleading information” in the referendum booklet being sent to every home in the country. Sinn Féin’s Caoimhghín Ó Caolaín said that it did not “explain the full consequences of key elements of the treaty”.

5. #LEVESON Former Sun and News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks has been in the hot seat today giving evidence at the Leveson Inquiry. She’s been talking about text messages exchanged with prime minister David Cameron, and has revealed that for a time he thought ‘LOL’ meant ‘lots of love’, rather than ‘laugh out loud’.
