Dublin City Council is upgrading the city's lights, re-creating 'heritage luminaires' from old moulds

The city is also exploring ‘smart city’ applications for lighting in the capital.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL is planning to re-haul public lighting around the city, replacing some 120 standard lamp posts with ‘heritage luminaires’, rolling out smart cities applications, and some ‘complementary projects’.

Heritage luminaires are the “ornate columns with the scrolled brackets” seen around College Green, Merrion Square, Gardiner Street and along sections of the quays, said a council spokesperson.

These are the are the seahorses, tendrils, shamrocks and crests decorating the city’s lamps and lamp posts. They’re spread throughout the capital, but mostly along the canals.

The aim of the project is to “maintain and enhance” the character of heritage areas by bringing “uniformity and consistency” to the lighting infrastructure in the public realm.

The council will be using patterns and moulds of some of the more common heritage structures, to allow them to “replicate the existing ornate lighting columns and brackets.”

Different designs belong to different areas, and are named after them or their creator, like the ‘Balintine’ — the most popular — named after its company.

Another popular type is the ‘Cuffe Street’ column, named – you guessed it – after the street it was first installed on.

The replica structures will mostly be added where originals already exist, mixed in with standard lamps, to amplify the heritage character of these areas.

This part of the upgrade is expected to take about a year to complete, according to the council.

Smart lighting

The council is also planning to replace up to 40,000 luminaires with energy efficient LED lighting, and a “significant amount” of public lighting legacy cables.

On top of that, Dublin could be seeing the roll-out of a central management system to manage street lights remotely, and to facilitate smart cities applications within the capital.

Right now, most of the city’s street lights aren’t remotely monitored.

The authority is also considering “complementary projects” like “village centre lighting renewal schemes”, to improve lighting in urban villages, bridge lighting – including feature lighting – Christmas lighting, and building lighting.

The overall project cost is about €50-€80m, as per expression of interest, though the project is only at tendering stage right now.

Can never understand people who are willing to pay slightly more for peroni. It is definitely not a superior beer, is bland and hails from a region far from renowned for their brewing skills. so why fall for the marketing and the fancy tap?

It’s a good bottle of beer, better than others on offer in most pubs. On tap it’s rubbish.

Not a huge fan of Nastro Azzuro myself but Peroni red label is a class beer. Would be my number 1, followed by Starapramen and Budvar.

I love peroni. Lovely rich smooth taste and I don’t seem to have as bad a hangover the next day for some reason. There are some places where it’s on a par, price wise, with hinekan, bud etc

But still worth paying a bit extra for? I’m not convinced.

All these so called “premium beers” are often just the standard lagers in their own country. I have some Italian friends and they say peroni is one of the cheaper lagers in Italy.

That’s completely true David. Seem to have a lot more red thumbs than expected. I can find no reason why it would be priced above Heineken or carlsberg. Or even carling/fosters for that matter. It’s pretty much the same style beer using similar techniques for mass production. It doesn’t use any special ingredients, maybe perhaps a bit more alcohol content but this shouldn’t be enough for the price hike. Perhaps I’ve turned into a beer nerd over the past years with my preference for German Weiss and local craft beers but even these compare in price more favourably than peroni and these are definitely far superior. I guess tastes vary so people will have their own opinion. I for one won’t fall for the marketing. Well at least not that marketing

Peroni is a far a nicer beer than the usual shite we get over here, like the bud and Heineken crap.
