'Evacuate, evacuate': Flights were suspended at Stansted Airport last night after an aborted takeoff

The airport said that the aircraft had aborted its take off due to a suspected engine problem.

FLIGHTS WERE TEMPORARILY suspended at Stansted airport yesterday evening after an aborted takeoff by a plane.

London Stansted Airport said at about 8pm that flights had been suspended due to an aircraft on the runway.

The airport said that the aircraft had aborted its take off due to a suspected engine problem.

“Emergency services attended and all passengers were evacuated from the aircraft as a precaution and have now been taken back to the terminal,” the airport said in a statement.

The plane was due to fly to Vienna.

Later, the airport said that the plane had been removed from the runway and that a full inspection was underway.

“The safety of our passengers is always our top priority and we’re working closely with out airlines to ensure affected passengers are looked after,” the airport said.

The Guardian reports that a passenger on the plane, Thomas Steer, a 24-year-old estate agent, said it had been accelerating for about 15 seconds before there was a “big bang on the side of the aircraft, which skidded to a stop”.

“It was scary. And then staff shouting: ‘Evacuate, evacuate.’ My friend opened the emergency exit and we slid down the slides,” he said.

A few old people fell over and the fire brigade treated them.

The aircraft was cleared from the runway and flights resumed at about 10.30pm.

@Manbackonboard: what’s the obsession with Ryanair, their safety record is excellent, their fleet is always young and their staff is very professional. Baggage policy and seating comfort are the only valid issues to moan about.
If it was a Ryanair flight, the name would be the first word on the headline, because media are also obsessed with them.

Irish Begrudgery is really living strong on this thread.. I can’t believe that some are on here hoping it was Ryanair.. you’d sooner see people injured or die just so ye could throw mud at an Irish company.

Ryanair is an Irish company born and grown out of Ireland and still proudly true to Irish roots. Yes many may disagree with how they operate but they’ve got one of the most modern and youngest fleet of aircraft flying today. Those that may have grown up thru the 80s and 90s will recall the monopolies that existed then in airlines and how much it cost to book a flight to the UK.. Never mind Europe or the USA! Ryanair broke down those monopolies and have continued to do so and maintain an impeccable safety record.

Well done to pilots in this incident.. Glad no one injured.

@Hank Schrader: I fly a lot with Ryanair they have really improved their customer service. They are now a great airline to fly with and have an excellent safety record. My only issue is their policy of deliberately seating couples apart. I believe that in an emergency this would dramatically slow an evacuation

Elsewhere it is reported as Lauda Air – heading to Vienna – I am reminded of the Manchester fire when the takeoff way aborted and 55 people lost their lives – but changed some of the safety design and rules in aircraft.

Memory is not too good but I think the floor lights were introduced as a consequence of the investigation into the reason so many died.

I include this because both aircraft heard a bang from an engine during the takeoff roll and, unlike yesterday’s scare mongering report about two aircraft whose paths were crossing at different altitudes, this could have been serious – but thankfully no one seriously injured in the evacuation.

@Niall Ó Cofaigh: your correct, strip lighting to all exits was introduced, bulkheads at foward galleys were widened as that was where a lot of the people got trapped, it also introduced new policies in asking passengers who were seated at window exits if they were familiar in using them… On that morning there was total blind confusion, pal of mine was one of the surviving crew members.
