Ireland is missing the worst of Storm Freya but tomorrow is looking very wet

The wind warning for Donegal, Galway and Mayo came into effect this morning at 8am.

LAST UPDATE | 2 Mar 2019

A STATUS YELLOW wind warning is in place for three counties as Met Éireann predicts a wet and windy night ahead.

The wind warning for Donegal, Galway and Mayo came into effect this morning at 8am and will apply until tomorrow morning at 3am.

Met Éireann advises that south to southwest winds will reach mean speeds of between and 65 km/h at times, with gusts between 90 and 100km/h.

Winds will be strongest along the coast.

A Status Yellow rainfall has also been issued for both Munster and Leinster with Met Éireann warning that 25 to 35 mm of rain could fall across today and into tomorrow.

The centre of Storm Freya is due to track over southern parts of Leinster and Munster tomorrow, meaning the strongest winds will be off Ireland’s south and east coasts and over Britain.

Tonight is set to be mostly dry, with temperatures dropping to between 3 and 5 degrees.

It will be a cold day tomorrow, with rain also forecast for much of the country.

Some showers could turn wintry, with temperatures falling to as low as 2 degrees in the afternoon.

“The rain will turn heavy in the afternoon and possibly turn wintry later as well, with some snow over the hills and mountains,” Met Éireann forecasts.

@Jun Stone: yep, status warnings for winter conditions erodes the legitimacy of the warning system imo. Tis a bit ridiculous

@krae: Their warning system is currently structured in a way that causes confusion, it’s currently causing fake warnings as a result.

I’m honestly surprised they didn’t name this warning Operation Mr. Frost or something to that effect.
