'Pioneer, innovator and legend': Prodigy frontman Keith Flint dies aged 49

Tributes have been pouring in for the singer, who reportedly died by suicide.

LAST UPDATE | 4 Mar 2019

The Prodigy at Brixton - London Keith Flint on stage in London in December 2017. EMPICS Entertainment EMPICS Entertainment

PRODIGY FRONTMAN KEITH Flint has died aged 49.

The vocalist was found dead at his home in Essex this morning.

The cause of his death has not yet been officially confirmed but his bandmate Liam Howlett said Flint took his own life, adding that he was “confused and heartbroken”.

Essex Police said in a statement: “We were called to concerns for the welfare of a man at an address in Brook Hill, North End, just after 8.10am on Monday, March 4.

“We attended and, sadly, a 49-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Flint was originally a dancer with the rave/dance group, but went on to perform vocals on their two biggest hits in the 1990s: Firestarter and Breathe.

His band, founded by keyboardist Howlett during the English underground rave scene at the start of that decade, went on to become a multi-million selling outfit, headlining arena shows and festivals.

They were an extremely popular live draw in Ireland throughout their late 90s-early 2000s heyday, and most recently headlined the closing night of last year’s Electric Picnic festival in Co Laois.

Alongside Howlett and fellow vocalist Maxim, Flint was one of three core members of The Prodigy throughout the group’s 29-year career.

They had recently returned from a tour of Australia and were due to start their first headlining tour of the US in a decade this May.

‘Pioneer, innovator and legend’

The band paid tribute to Flint today, saying: “It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint. A true pioneer, innovator and legend. He will be forever missed.

“We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.”

Friends and people in the entertainment industry have been paying tribute to Flint, with DJ Jo Whiley describing him as an “incredible, iconic frontman with a soft centre”.

@Brian Dunne: Absolutely Liam is a genius and responsible for the tunes. But I think Keith moving forward from being a dancer to a frontman was the catalyst for their global success. Before Firestarter they were an amazing band but almost faceless. Keith became a tangible identity for the band that literally millions of people responded to and loved.

    Rip Keith.

@Brian Dunne: watched an interview of him and Liam once, he spoke how Liam played him firestarter, which at the time was just a musical piece. Keith said, “yeah that’s cool, but how about if I put some lyrics over it”? And the rest was history. Keith’s input into their songs cant be underestimated.

The Prodigy were and are massive influence on music since they brought the underground rave scene into the main stream back in the early 90′s. Keith’s off the charts on stage energy was a big part of what made the Prodigy a massive success. His Firestarter alter ego was a seminal moment for the band which propelled them to the sort global domination not yet seen by any dance act by that time. His death is a huge loss to the band, Essex, the British/world music scene and of course to his family and friends. RIP Keith.

Music is so bland now, considering just how great the UK big beat scene was in the 1990′s, its a shame the 20 year rule hasn’t really made such impactful, in your face rave tunes now as it did. There needs to be acts like the Prodigy, and Flint being off his head at the point performing banger after banger was a classic example of something you just don’t see anymore. Sorely missed

Could’ve seen them in the tent at Oxegen all them years ago but Green Day were en vogue with their new album. Barely any classics if I recall. Whereas Prodigy were meant to be class.

He said what he was going to do it’s actually very sad we all have our crosses to bare but to actually do what he said what he would do when he had it all is frightening the poor man must have had some bad demons it’s always the same the person that is always the center of attention is the person that we have to look out for the most.

It’s way to common now unfortunately he suicided. God rest him it’s shocking and I’m still in shock.
