Poll: Should sugary snacks and drinks be banned from hospital vending machines?

New proposals would see such products removed from hospital vending machines.

NEW MEASURES SET to be brought in by the HSE will limit what foods and drinks are available in hospital vending machines.

The Irish Daily Mail reported this morning that sugar-laden fizzy drinks and any snacks over 200 calories will be banned in the future from these vending machines under the new proposals.

This would effectively mean bars such as Kit Kats, Mars bars and cans of cola from the over 400 hospital vending machines in the country.

So, today we’re asking you: Should sugary snacks and drinks be banned from hospital vending machines?

Poll Results:

No (6927)
Yes (5094)

She really is an extraordinary person. Would like to see her in Government.

I really hope that the silver lining to the fact that reports of sexual assault have increased 10% is that it’s just the reporting – and not instances- of assault that have increased.

Hopefully because victims of assault think they are now more likely to be believed and supported.

Trouble is SAVI 2002 was fatally flawed to the point of being abusive in it’s own right to some categories of women http://www.drcc.ie/about/savi.pdf

    Sexworkers Page 227
“After an interview with the director of the Ruhama Women’s Project
it was concluded that there were inherent difficulties in approaching
the women who worked in prostitution themselves to
discuss the main issues of the survey”
“Based on a review of the literature and the interview with the
director of Ruhama, a questionnaire was developed to be filled
out by staff and volunteers at Ruhama”
    Learning Disabled Page 243
Seems to be one long excuse for using existing dating rather than consulting “Learning Disabled” women that they also refer to as “Mentally Handicapped” in the title.
    Psychiatric Patients Page 265
“A number of proposals were made as to how to access information
regarding histories of sexual violence in the Irish psychiatric
patient population. The first was to conduct a review of hospital
charts. The second was to interview patients directly, and the
third was to speak with professionals working in the area. ”
    “It was decided
in this setting to identify issues relevant to the experience,
disclosure and recording of sexual violence through a series of
semi-structured interviews with a group of relevant professional
    informants. ”

I fit all three categories and explained that in response to the phone questionnaire, something that was never mentioned, and at least those three categories of women have consistently been gagged and lied over ever since.

SAVI 2002 was a cruel joke for many vulnerable people and a money spinner for the least ethical aspects of civil society for 16 years…nobody needs more of the same, and I see little chance of anything better in the current climate.

To avoid the “Bette Midler effect” let me put it this way:
Women from vulnerable communities are the pound dogs of the world.

Sexual abuse crosses all of society . In fact in privileged homes the coming out to talk may be even harder as social status wealth is a barrier to disclosure . . Sexual abuse doesn’t discriminate whether your a pound dog or a pedigree each victim each dog if you want to continue with that descriptions hurts just the same more or less and that applies to male victims too . As for prostitutes many end up in this line of work because sexual assault abuse has led them to see themselves as available worthless . All who are abused are victims . I’m sorry for your obvious lack of proper care but that’s more the norm so your not alone . Any talk insights raising awareness of sexual abuse assault is good can lead to better safeguards more research more help and healing .

    @Bernadette Fitzpatrick:

Here is an example of the kind of non-fact people would not believe if sex workers had been consulted directly in the first place:
“As for prostitutes many end up in this line of work because sexual assault abuse has led them to see themselves as available worthless”

With an absolutely tiny percentage of exceptions most people who sell sex do so because of varying ratios of needing the money and lacking support systems, Of course, victims of familial or marital sexual abuse are much more likely to lack support systems than the general population, even so, when Ruhama surveyed actual sex workers in 1994 they found that one in slightly less than 4 had been sexually abused, just a hairsbreadth over the national average.

When you refuse to ask people to speak fir themselves as your equals AND refuse to hear the answer, you are treating them as pounds dogs and lack sufficient information to form an opinion on their situation or their needs.

Outstanding book from an outstanding woman. I’m a big reader, but this undoubtedly is the best book I have read in 2018.
Laugh out loud funny at times to heartbreakingly poignant and sad. I’d encourage everyone to buy a copy.
