COUNCIL WORKERS ARE receiving garda protection as they carry out works in some parts of Dublin’s north inner city due to a number incidents of threatening and abusive behaviour.
In recent weeks, Dublin council workers have been protected by officers as they built a plinth wall in the area. Garda assistance was sought by the council to make sure the construction work went smoothly.
Staff have received physical threats against them in recent months.
Locals are not satisfied that gardaí are on hand to protect workers but have not dealt with the ever-present drug problem in the vicinity.
One local told TheJournal.ie that garda cars can be seen from 6am around the area, either protecting workers or monitoring what the local described as “free-for-all drug dealing”.
Drug dealing has always been a problem in the area, but one woman who contacted TheJournal.ie detailed how the level of dealing has escalated to such an extent that she won’t let her children out the front door due to her fear they could become involved in criminality.
Speaking under condition of anonymity, the woman said: “I’ve seen too many go along and become dealers.”
She said that Sheriff Street has great people living there and that it is the actions of a handful of people who are giving the area a bad name.
She added: “They start at half six in the morning while the street cleaners are going by. There are people hanging around already at the time looking for crack. It’s just everywhere now.”
Sheriff Street and its surroundings have borne the brunt of a lot of criminal activity in the past 20 years.
It was where innocent Martin O’Rourke was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity during the Hutch/Kinahan feud. Guns and drugs have been seized on numerous occasions in the last two years.
One local dealer gardaí are monitoring has been accused of involvement in the Kinahan/Hutch feud. He has at least 40 convictions including one for possession of a firearm.
Security sources told TheJournal.ie that he is openly dealing around the Sheriff Street and Spencer Dock areas of the capital.
Dublin City Council confirmed that council workers received protection from gardaí recently.
A spokeswoman said: “I have been advised to tell you that Dublin City Council were erecting a plinth wall and gates at this location.
“The plinth wall was shuttered and erected with a concrete pour and the assistance of the Gardaí was sought to ensure the concrete wall had time to set correctly.”

Most watched show on television because there was absolutely nothing else worthwhile on. It’s time RTE stopped blowing all of the licence fee money on the disgraceful salaries of it’s “stars” (half a million a year for Ray D’Arcy) and actually started putting some money into content.
@comeixcity vw pay most of ray Darcy’s salary his radio show anyway. They have a slot at the start and end of the program and the start and end of every ad break.
I kind of don’t mind the TV show. It has a couple of laughs in it. Saw the live show too and it wasn’t too bad. But the movie is absolutely appalling. One of the worst I’ve ever seen. It should be buried somewhere where it will never be found again.
This is one Irish product I have no problem the Brits claiming as their own. It’s an embarrassment.
I’m in the UK right now and Mrs Brown is HUGE and very popular.
How they ever had an empire is beyond me.

I tuned out after 20 minutes. The wife turned in over after another 5 minutes. Looked at a few reviews and got 2 out if 5. It was truly awful muck. RTE showing it 3 times over holidays. You’d think they could find something better. It was a pure money making exercise Brendan even admitted that himself. It just didn’t work.

Absolute tripe. Would rather gouge my own eyes out than watch it. I just do not get the hype and awards, especially in other counties. Awful stuff.
The movie had one irredeemable defect: it was not funny. My wife loves Mrs Brown and I can hear her laughing like a drain every time it’s on (I cannot abide the show) but the movie raised not even a titter in her. She switched it off half way through – like countless other fans, I suspect.

I wouldn’t give the whole “he’s a member of Mensa” thing any credence – anyone can get in there. I know loads of thicks who got in.
Now, O’Carroll is not a thick by any means – but the Mensa thing really means nothing.

Christmas tv is always but always dreadful the trick is to record a load of good stuff in the weeks before Christmas and then view your recorded material on the days of Christmas

mrs brown are quids in and fair dues for exploiting the market. Despite the many great british comedys they always retain a taste for the slapstick rubbish.

Watched the movie the other night. It was awful. All the family around cringing at how poor it was all slapped together. Agree too with the swearing. Totally unnecessary. A few fecks here and there hurts no one, but every second word is either a curse or an unfunny overused innuendo. I really enjoy most comedy. Didn’t laugh once during this though!

I’m far from that Tom. I find it funny because it lets you sit back and forget about worries and just laugh at comedy be it simple or stupid. Who cares at the end of the day. If you don’t like it turn the channel and watch something different but i won’t call you a thick for doing that just as you shouldn’t call me anything for enjoying what i like.
I think he is a very good comedian .I am not mad about the film or show. Good luck to him he makes people laugh and that can’t be bad.
Brendan O’Carroll is the worst example of comedy. His movie was a disgrace, every second word an f or a b. Shame on RTE to think it was suitable viewing on Christmas night. horrendous stuff. We were spoiled for comedy as kids, Porridge, Fools and Horses, Young Ones, Two Ronnies. O’Carroll should be strung up for crimes against comedy. The idea that out takes make up the gags in the show is cringe worthy and people fall for this. Sad excuse for a comedian, comedy bully more like!
