I don’t believe a syllable of what he claims, I have no doubt that he is a charlatan of the highest order but silencing him and deporting him probably isn’t the right way to go about it.

What’s wrong with letting him speak anyway? If he’s a liar, which in all likelihood he is, invite some oncologists, people who deal cancer and tumours on a daily basis. They’d rip him to shreds.

We have health regulations for a reason. His treatments should be documented before he can speak. He is dangerous and people need to be protected from him.

I’m fully aware of that but you can’t stop people from giving a speech based on lies because you don’t like their lies. You can’t deport someone because you think they are la liar. You can’t silence someone for preaching unsubstantiated horseshit anymore than you can silence someone who presents a talk based on properly conducted scientific and empirical research because you don’t like what they say. I don’t know why so many people disagreeing with me. What other City is completely jammed by traffic every year for the ‘ annual ‘novena’. You cannot move around the city in November for about 6 hours every day. The mind just boggles!

When told by traditional science-based medicine that they can do nothing for you, then a person like this gentleman can offer you hope. Rationality goes out the window. He did not cure her. She died within 12 months of her ‘treatment’. It’s the total absence of morality in these people that makes people stand up and say ‘not here thank you’.

I cannot support you argument on the basis of free speech and proving him wrong. Proof in a case like this is similar to justice, it does not exist.

Even if you were desperate and gullible enough to believe him, it would involve relocation to Florida which is a move that a seriously ill person could not take lightly. I’ve lost too many relatives and friends to this disease, people react differently after diagnosis, some will accept medical treatment and some will try and catch a rainbow. Telling someone that rainbows cannot be caught is very hard, nigh on impossible. And an expose TV programme.

Even though it is despicable to propagate pseudo-medicine to vulnerable people, censorship and trying to shut him down is the wrong approach.

People of his ilk like to pretend that they’re being persecuted and censored by the authorities so that potential victims will believe that some shadowy figure(s) is/are trying to stop a genuine cure for something being offered to the public because it will end profits for “big pharma” etc, thereby making this treatment in the mind of the victim genuine and making them more likely to part with their money.

Many of the victims who fall for this are likely to also believe in conspiracy theories with similar narratives where people with the “truth” are silenced. Banning and censoring these types of events is just oxygen to these charlatans and will balloon their support (and their pockets).

The only effective way to reduce support is to peacefully protest outside these venues, trying to dissuade potential victims from going in, get a dialogue with them and respectfully present them with information refuting this nonsense.

I have two, what I thought were sane normal relatives, who told me that they followed the advice of these people last year and they believed it could cure such things as cancer. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, how could people believe this nonsense, it there was any truth to it did they not think medical science would investigate it? Oh no, ‘Big Pharma’ wanted it covered up, of course they did. Since then the husband of one of these has become seriously ill. I wasn’t so rude to ask. @sayre I had the same diagnosis as you, though around 12 years ago. I stuck to proven treatments, surgery, chemo, radiotherapy. I followed the diet of eating whatever I liked.

I’d never claim to be cancer free (cos who the hell knows at any given minute) but certainly it hasn’t been an issue for me for 12 years – I am in rude good health now.

One of the first things I promised myself when diagnosed was that I’d not let that bloody disease take over my life. I wasn’t giving it the power to do that. So, for a year, I did things diligently by the book (or by the peer reviewed articles if you will). Then, I just got on with my life and put it behind me.

Looking back now it seems like a minor episode in my life, a short period of illness, not in any way defining. I rarely even think about it, it does not dictate to me. I have eaten an outrageous amount of meat over those years – succulent steaks, magic BBQs – and am none the worse for it.

What does this prove? Why nothing, nothing at all. Both of our stories are just that, stories, anecdotes, meaningless in isolation. Which is why science exists – to evaluate on a far more controlled basis what actually works.

I researched my own treatment as I have every right to do. Everyone should have that right. I made an educated decision. I was not coerced by Hippocrates. I sought them out . Katie I had no medical intervention whatsoever . I had an MRI every three months so I could document what was happening to my tumour. Now eight years later I have an annual blood test to see if there are any circulating cancer cells. All clear.
I am happy that you are clear as well. We each have a right to choose how we treat our bodies.

I have. I watched my dad fight cancer twice, and unfortunately, watched him pass away in April 2012.

I still don’t believe that any of the people selling miracle cures for cancer would have helped him, and my dad’s illness and eventual death didn’t change that. I’m glad that we didn’t bankrupt ourselves and force dad to spend his last days, weeks, and months pursuing dangerous, difficult, and/or expensive snake oil treatments which ultimately wouldn’t have worked, and would only have served to rob him of time with us, and empty our bank accounts.

Not really a free speech issue. They’re petitioning a private business not to accommodate him, that is the Cork group exercising their free expression, and whatever the hotel chooses they will be exercising their free association. It would only be an attempt to restrict free speech if they were petitioning the state to deny him entry due to his ideas or petitioning the guards to arrest him for expressing his ideas.

Noone can prove that eating wheatgrass doesn’t cure cancer, so in medical science we put the burden on the person who says that it does to prove it with peer-reviewed reports that involve double-blind placebo test on a statistically significant population. Especially when they are at their most vulnerable. Why does your idea of free speech include the right to tell lies. Do lies not corrupt the dialogue? Do they not corrupt the system of thought. If freedom of though exists in this form it can only lead to destruction of society. Free speech is an illusion, just as many ideas are: justice, health, goodness for examples. These are all imagined states. And free speech that allows for the expression of lies is of no value to any individual, let alone society.

Áine if ‘alternative’ therapies were proven to work effectively and, most importantly, consistently they would just be called therapies. Sometimes, no matter how much we long for things to be true, there just aren’t – we have to live in the real world, which is incredibly difficult at times.
Yes, big Pharma are in it for the money but they cannot earn most of that money unless they have products that hospitals and doctors want to buy – if a treatment doesn’t work, it’s discontinued or if something better comes along they switch to it.
Yes, prevention is better than cure and while we have a better idea of the environmental causes of some cancers the fact is that many cancers have a genetic element to them and for some environmental causes it could be a case of locking yourself in a bubble (not a plastic one though) and never going out, whilst trying to grow your own food inside it in order to exclude all possible contagions.
