Five men arrested over gangland activity in north Dublin

Gardaí have said that over 50 murder attempts have been foiled in recent years.

LAST UPDATE | 28 Mar 2019

A FURTHER TWO people have been arrested by gardaí investigating feud-related activity in the Dublin area.

This brings to five the total number of men in custody.

Earlier, gardaí said they had arrested three men – aged between 24 and 38 -  over conspiracy to murder.

Gardaí from Special Crime Operations apprehended the men yesterday in the north inner city and Finglas areas.

The five men are currently being detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 at Dublin garda stations.

In relation to gang activity in recent years, Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll said last year that gardaí had intervened in close to 50 cases now where if they had not taken action they believe a murder would have taken place.

Sources have told TheJournal.ie that a figure of closer to 70 is accurate as of the end of 2018.

With reporting from Garreth MacNamee and Cormac Fitzgerald

Men arrested and comments left open, John Delaney not even charged with anything and will never set a foot inside a court room but comments closed.. Can anyone in the journal explain the difference or is it working class crime that we get to comment on?

Just because they catch a gangster with a gun in the boot doesnt mean they were on there way to assassinate someone. I’d imagine most serious gangsters carry guns. That figure of 50 in reality is greatly exaggerated I’d imagine.

@Michael Collins: Despite what some here would say, this is not the wild west. Criminals do not walk around with guns, ready for a shoot out; to do so risks arrest & imprisonment, especially if they are well known to gardaí and thus more likely to be stopped.

@Joe Bloggs: I would disagree with you on that I knew of 2 guys that walked around limerick with a strap and a hand gun waiting for someone to try and shoot them they are actually both dead by the way. So as the saying goes live by the sword you die by it.

@Michael Collins: You don’t read much, do you? Have a look at what actually happened; those weapons were found during planned searches & planned stops, all the result of intelligence gathered by gardaí. Have a look at any of the murders as well; all those killed have been deliberately targeted & none have been found with weapons of their own. So no one is wandering around with a gun, waiting for the gunfight at the OK Corral.

The Gardai are justified in pulling in persons suspected of criminal activity, for questioning regarding cases under investigation, how else are they to get information if citizens are afraid to assist in enquiries voluntarily. We may be free to go about our daily lives, but only if it is a law abiding life.
And the process disrupts criminal activity, so plus plus.
