The Daily Fix: Saturday

Your round-up of the day’s biggest stories as well as the bits and pieces you may have missed…

EVERY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of the day’s biggest news stories as well as the bits and pieces you may have missed.

Referendum round-up:

  • During a radio debate today over the Fiscal Compact referendum, Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton said that a ‘no’ vote could lead Ireland to further austerity because of uncertainty about future funding, while Richard Boyd Barrett TD described the treaty itself as a “recipe for austerity”.
  • The Green Party will not be taking a position on the Fiscal Treaty referendum following a vote among members at the party’s annual convention this weekend in Kilkenny. Although 62 per cent voted in support of the referendum, this wasn’t a high enough proportion for the party to take that stance.
  • Meanwhile, has the Socialist Party won the contest for the biggest lamp-based campaign posters?

    I personally don’t think I want my tax money going to imprisoning people who have sex with their sibling for possibly 20-50 years. Minimum cost to keep a prisoner in Ireland is €90,000 per annum, max is €250,000. Multiplying that out, for a crime in which the only harm that could be caused is inbreeding doesn’t seem worth it to me.

    What say you?

    “a crime in which the only harm is inbreeding” Are you serious? Conveniently forgetting countless innocent children who have had their lives ripped apart by these monsters? Or of those of age and consenting, the kids born with severe disabilities(also a lifelong sentence) because of their stupidity? Your comment is thoughtless and selfish. Complaining that you have to pay to keep these monsters locked up, what is your alternative? Have them go free to repeat their crimes?

    @Lorraine Cremin

    Child abuse and incest are not the same thing, of course I support locking up those dangerous to society.

    My point was if an extreme case arose where two siblings were having a sexual relationship, I don’t think the right thing to do morally would be to lock them up, nor is it the right thing fiscally. Yes they might have a child born with problems, it’s a strange world and that child would likely not have a great start in life if it was known their father was their uncle. I don’t think it’s right but I don’t think we have the right to legislate against it.

    What the f**k shall you vote – the more you inform yourself the more confused you get! Nobody really tells the truth!!! I am ready to vote not at all even I think that is wrong! When I tend to YES I read a very good and logic NO column and then i tend to NO and then the YES column is very good and persuasive….. dont know really!! Bad NOBODY tells the truth and I also believe that the politicians are very scared about their wages and positions and really give a tinys rats ass about the people but then I see Enda works and I can not really say I do not like him…well pure guts that will be the main thing how I vote I guess….
