'Rubberneckers are causing delays': Crash on M50 northbound causes brief closure

The section of the motorway has been reopened but delays remain.

THERE ARE DELAYS on the northbound side of the M50 motorway in Dublin following a crash between junctions 11 and 12.

All northbound traffic between the two junctions had been closed for a period causing significant tailbacks. Two lanes have now been reopened and traffic is easing but motorists are still being warned of delays.

Delays were reported back to junction 13 but are expected to improve now that two lanes have been reopened.

“Traffic is moving through slowly and motorists are to expect delays due to the high volume of traffic at this location,” gardaí have said.

Emergency services remain at the scene of the crash between Firhouse and Tallaght and Dublin Fire Brigade has issued a warning about rubbernecking on the other side of the motorway.

“Rubberneckers are causing delays southbound. Avoid the area,” Dublin Fire Brigade said in a tweet.

The emergency service also asked motorists to be aware of workers at the scene.

@Fergus O’Connor: the same thing happened inbound on the N7 after the Citywest junction yesterday morning. I hate using a cynical tone when someone could be hurt but it is very frustrating.

@Fergus O’Connor: not disputing some people are doing this, but do people not slow down as they see emergency vehicles and often police.

I don’t know about everyone else, but if I see police I slow down.

@Mushy Peas: Mushy, slowing down is fine say to 60 to 80 km but it’s the people who jam on down to zero are the accident makers usually to the next car behind them.
On a separate note: they are called motorways not brakeways, so once on them get motoring!

Why can’t the Fire brigade and the Gardai organize to have the large pop up frames with covers on them like they have in Britain to put around the scene so as to stop the drivers in all lanes rubbernecking.

@Cork Truck Driver: yes true, but it should reduce the rubber necking time at least if there’s less detail to look at. If they sponsored the tent with something banal like washing up liquid people might just move on.
I make a conscious effort to maintain my speed going past any type of “attraction” / incident that may be considered rubberneckworthy by some and not look at it – what’s the point anyway?!
Inevitably there’s a slow down of car(s) in front of me though and I have to brake.
    Fu(king idiots.
I hate rubberneckers with a passion.

@Frank Brennan: Having resourses to do that would be an issue. The fire service priority is to deal with the incident/injuries. They can’t spare the time and manpower to set up screens or tents around an incident. Screens would be set up if there was a fatality but that’s not the first priority.

Can we please just mount a fence or something to block the view to the other side? Honestly would fix a lot of the problems on the m50. Why do we need to see across the concrete baracades?

and not everyone fu(king rubbernecks at an accident. There’s seeing and slowing down for a slack jawed gawk.
I consciously speed up even to nudge on the idiot in front of me I see slowing down. I might see it in peripheral vision passing by it but make a determination to maintain speed.
Using populist reductionism as a justification for rubbernecking is pretty low brow.

@SkylineSi: I would assume because that’s a Fire Brigade video the only two open lanes are the middle and overtaking (the crash has been moved to the inside lane).

Once they get up further SOME will probably move over but the number of people that join the motorway and immediately go into the middle lane is, quite frankly, hugely annoying.

@Mjhint: it’s lane 1 , 2 , and 3. You overtake on right and move back left when lane is empty and safe to do so . “ no body moves on this country only at last minute with massive surprise to following traffic, no indication of movement in time”

@Mjhint: you can pass on the inside lane, but it’s still not OVERtaking. It’s undertaking. Only thing you can OVERtake if you’re in the first lane is something that’s on the hard shoulder. And nothing should be on the hard shoulder on a motorway anyway.
