The recalled Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play sleeper US Consumer Product Safety Commission

Fisher-Price recalls millions of baby sleepers linked to multiple infant deaths

Fisher-Price said that it stood by the safety of its products when issuing the voluntary recall.

FISHER-PRICE RECALLED nearly 5 million infant sleepers in the US on Friday after more than 30 babies died in them over a 10-year period.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said anyone who bought a Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play sleeper should stop using it right away and contact Fisher-Price for a refund or voucher.

The sleepers, which are used to put babies to sleep, are soft padded cradles that vibrate.

Fisher-Price and the CPSC said the deaths occurred after infants rolled over from their backs to their stomachs or sides while unrestrained, but did not specify how they died.

In an article this week, Consumer Reports found that some of the infants died from suffocation.

A safety warning was issued last week, but The American Academy of Pediatrics urged Fisher-Price and the CPSC to recall the sleepers, calling them “deadly.”

In a statement Friday, Fisher-Price said that it stood by the safety of its products and said it issued the voluntary recall “due to reported incidents in which the product was used contrary to the safety warnings and instructions”.

The recall covers about 4.7 million sleepers, which sold for between $40 and $149 since 2009.

It is not clear whether the product has been sold in Ireland.

So they’re recalling this product due to parent failing to give their children adequate supervision.

@Michael Connick: what just thinking who would put a baby who was able to roll into anything without restraints

@niamh ryan: judging by the picture it has the same type of restraints as similar products from other manufacturers, could this be a bigger issue?

@Vocal Outrage: yes, bad parenting. Most likely plopping the child into it sans restraints

@Vocal Outrage: just from reading the article I would think that the restraints were not used at all

Maybe I’m wrong but I thought Fisher Price were a toy manufacturer.
If you want a sleeper for a baby, you should be responsible enough to buy one from a company that specialises in this type of product.

@Logan Shepherd: In the US at least they sell lots of baby seats, rockers, chairs etc. Not just toys.

Had one of these for our now 1 year old. It was a very good product, but we always made sure to use the harness/restraints…

@Ann Moles: You usually don’t bring it anywhere you just show proof of having one and then get a refund, then you would dispose of it yourself. Their website would be a good place to start.

@Shane Corry: not when there’s a safety issue like this .you’d have to bring the product back .otherwise some stupid person would get their refund and still use it without following the safety guidelines.

@Ann Moles: You take it back to where you purchased it. If you bought it online maybe you can take it back to a fisher price stockist in your area.

If its the parents’ faults, then why such a high rate with this product as opposed to other baby sleepers? The problem the product obviously.

Would they not say what caused them to die?
    Would it be suffocating?

The babies died of positional asphyxiation. High risk letting your baby sleep in anything which is not flat surface / over 10 % incline. Has nothing to do with using harness or restraint, as the head rolls to the side/front and air supply is cut off at the neck. So even car seats, baby swings etc from other manufacturers than the ones affected by the recall aren’t a safe sleep environment for babies.
