Tesco recalls own brand cheese over E.coli fears

The possible presence of Shiga toxin producing E.coli is the reason for the recall.

TESCO IS RECALLING one of its cheese brands due to fears that it is contaminated with a dangerous type of E.coli.

All batches of Tesco Finest St Félicien Du Dauphiné unpasteurised cheese is being recalled due to the possible presence of Shiga toxin producing E.coli (STEC).

While most E.coli are harmless STEC produce a powerful toxin which can cause severe illness. Symptoms include abdominal cramps and diarrhoea and they can appear up to eight days after the initial infection.

Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in Tesco stores advising consumers not to eat the cheese.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland today issued a notice to inform consumers of the recall.

We reap what we sow. Our planning system allows houses to be scattered all over the countryside instead of being concentrated in villages and towns. Where we do build concentrated developments, we add ‘vibrancy and diversity’ with this wonderful concept we call (anti)social housing. Scattered development makes provision of basic public services uneconomic, we’ve seen it with refuse collection, broadband, mobile phone coverage, water supply, road maintenance, policing, healthcare, public transport, and now post office services. We demand that public services operate without state subventions, so to achieve that we hive them off to companies like An Post, who make commercial decisions like any other company, where earnings per share is the only metric. We reap what we sow…

Even the regular banks have rationalised their services by closing branches and cutting counter staff.
Every village once had a blacksmith – but nobody is suggesting that these be re-instituted.

    @Michael Kavanagh:

There was a load of old cobblers also throughout this country, until fairly recently, but their numbers seem to have dwindled significantly following economic news from Venezuela on the impact of poor business models adopted there.

@Michael Kavanagh: My village had its bank closed 5 or so years ago and now the post office is going to be closed.. we lost our supermarket too but a new guy has since reopened and it’s doing very well.. he wanted to put the post office in a spare space in the back of the shop and he was told he wasn’t allowed. Plenty of people in the village use the post office and there’s always people in there.. My question is how come none were closed in Dublin?

@Michael Kavanagh: The same banks who famously couldn’t give a rat’s fart for either their high street customers or their staff? Yeah, just the right people to set the benchmark!

@Michael Kavanagh: that is the very space the post office should be targeting. They could deliver front of house services for themselves and for the banks and credit unions, they have that infrastructure available.

@Sean: Except post offices in Dublin have closed. The volume of letters has decreased substantially in the last decade. We either require semi state businesses to pay their way or we pay more taxes to subsidise a failing business. As a PAYE taxpayer that pays over 60%back to the Govt I’m damned if I’m paying any more to subsidise a post office that does single figure transactions every day. The Post Office isn’t a social service, it either pays it’s way or it closes, which for rural Ireland means it’s either used by locals or it’s not. You can’t have it both ways.

Post office and school are the basis for a viable village/town .. but it does not mean that each village needs a post office which is open 5/7 days ! A post office can open 2 to 3 times a week eventually less or be opened in a local shop. Lemybrien is a good exemple : it is on the N25 and not that far from dungarvan but big enough to need a post office. Why not keep it open 2 days a week (eventually half day) in the local shop or why not in one of the 2 refilling stations ? Keeping it open like that would be helpful for the local people who would not have to go to dungarvan by car if they have one or by bus if not. I saw a post office kept open by the local shop in a remote village from scotland and it worked very well. So why not in Ireland ?

Competition to banking system will not be tolerated by FFG. Liebour and Independent crowd make their noise when the horse has bolted. Things go from bad to worse as the cycle of boom and bust goes on. Will we ever learn with 100 years of this crowd..

Get rid of them all. They are only there so oul ones can buy stamps pay esb/gas and get the pension. So people on the dole can collect money. All this can be done on line or through a bank. Stamps could be bought in any shop.

Just what a non viable business needs to do to survive. Get into the loan business. Jesus Christ are these people for real? Of course the tax payer will end up bailing it out when it collapses because they face loans to every Tom, dick and Harry.

The post offices should be used for paying all bills and making payments to banks, building societies and credit unions.

Payments to government services such as revenue, should be at the post office.

Farmer should be allowed to use post office to arrange farm payments to accounts and business accounts.

All pensions and welfare payments should be made through the local post office.

All post offices should be collection and delivery points for DHL, UPS, etc.

All post offices should have a national lottery machine

All post offices should supply tickets for Bus Eireann, Irish Rail and any contracted bus service.

Outside of every post office should be a taxi zone and drop off, lift point.

Siting of the Post office should be next door to local shop or if practical and expands services inside the local shop.

Why not add taxing your car to the services of a Post Office ? Not everyone can access the Motor tax office during the workweek and not everyone can do it online either,

Many rural Post offices could be potential Tourist Offices. Tourist offices are often based outside towns and are inaccessible to visitors and locals.
Depending on the size of premises, restaurants, internet cafes, local historic guide tours and ecco courses, for example, traditional stone masonry could be implemented.
    The list is endless.

Post offices have so much to offer. Give them a chance. Do not shut them down and decline services for the elders, the alone, the disabled, the citizens who need community so much. Thank you.
