Residents beside site for new student complex protest over noise levels and rats

The new 300-bed student accommodation complex is expected to be completed by 2020.

RESIDENTS LIVING BESIDE a large student accommodation development site in Dublin city have complained about noise levels in the mornings and evenings and a surge in the rats population around their homes.

Residents of the Whitefriar Gardens council estate, which is directly across the road from the Aungier Street development, held a protest outside the site earlier this week. When finished the site, which is owned by Scape, a private student housing developer, will contain a 300-bed complex and a number of retail spaces.

One resident, Myles Kenny told TheJournal.ie that the noise levels have become a nuisance for him and his neighbours, particular those with young children.

“I live just there [with a window facing the site] and my neighbour has an autistic child and there were two lights shining on the site for about six months, they had to put black bags on the windows,” he said.

Kenny said residents can regularly hear noise on the site from 7.30 and sometimes the contractors get special permission to start earlier.

“It’s very disruptive for us and for kids as well if it’s in the evening and they’re in bed.”

He said they had a meeting with the contractors to express their frustration about the noise, and other issues like access to footpaths and an increase in the rat population in the area.

“The flats are full of rats since [work began]. This place here was idle for about three or four years and it built up an awful amount of rats in it because the grass was 12 feet high and it was just rubble and everything. When they came in and cleared it the rats obviously spread and they’re in the flats now,” he explained.

“You’d get the odd one before around the bins but since this has happened we’ve seen awn awful amount of rats in the flats.

“It’s nearly an occurrence every second day that someone sees one now on the landings or near the bins. The council built something to keep them out of the bins but they still get in. It’s just a danger with the kids having rats around.”

Scape living, a UK based company, has 3,000 student rooms in London, with developments in Australia and plans for a large-scale complex in Boston.

The plans for the development include 300 student ensuite student rooms with a gym, recreation areas and roof gardens in the complex. Five retain units will also be included.

Permission for the development was initially refused by Dublin City Council in April 2016.

This was appealed to An Bord Pleaneala and permission was granted in in November the same year with a number of conditions including the archaeological excavation of the site.

A spokesperson for Scape declined to comment on local resident complaints.

How exactly does a party with the most seats in the parliament implementing its mandate make a mockery of representative democracy? There is a logic gap in that claim. Red thumb away but it is nonsense.

Its certainly an illogical statement but the mockery and foolishness lays with those that keep voting these detached narssastic idiots into power who yes, make decissions which favour those corporate structures that take advantage of the citizens of this island.. Until we vote for a different game plan nothing will ever change

Becasuse FG,FF and Labour govern in the interests of the most powerful but small section of society, the capitalist class. They don’t govern in the interests of the vast majority, the working class. Hence our democracy is only a facade as starkly revealed in the Apple case with the entire political establishment fighting tooth and nail for Apple’s tax dodging rights.

Do you believe that the government has your vested interests at heart or do you think it is leaving it to companies like Apple to provide for the well being of the citizens of the state? Look at the evidence:
    1. Failure to ask for a write down on senior bond holders of bank debt
    2. A refusal to object to the hoisting of water charges on Irish people. ( I believe people should pay for public services and that people should not be asked to pay twice for it. I also believe in transparency in the rendering process of government contract so)
    3. The vigorous refusal of the government to accept the EU ruling on Apple ( for right or for wrong. I hope you are starting to see a pattern)
    4. Nama. ( say no more)
    5. The cuts in funding to medical cards, public services, education, infrastructure I.e things the public need
Representative democracy is supposed to work like the representatives work in the interest of those who elect them.
Please respond with my original thesis in mind. I would like to hear your response.

HOTBank, not one of the “hard” or “tough” or “difficult” decisions ever effect those that make them, or effects the elite in the country.

When those decisions do negatively effect them, or their lifestyles, then and only then can they call them “tough”, “hard” or “difficult”
Basically they dont give a flying one what they do as long as it doesn’t effect them.

Noticed something on the story of government to close loopholes on vulture funds. Are these vulture funds going to still be able to use the charitable status on assets that are not Irish but still flow through Ireland.
Just the wording specifically mentions Irish.
The Department of Finance is to move to close off a controversial loophole that allows so-called vulture funds to avoid tax on profits buying and selling Irish property assets.

Vrad the Inveigler was about as useful a minister for health as the morbidly obtuse Mary Harney was, but at least he could test the latest model of trolley in person.

Ah Michael, that’s not fair at all! Vradkar has proven himself to be intelligent and more than competent at almost every step of his career. By far, he is one of the most outstanding politicians this country has ever produced, by far one of the best regarded and in the topmost class of slíbíns. Left unchecked, there’s no telling how far he might go.

Hi Patrick. I sincerely hope he goes far,in fact the further the better. This man spends more time with his head up his own butt and trying to run every other department. He is a total embarrassment to kenny and that is why he has been bounced around.

“It is no big deal,” he told me, “Every society does it. Think of it in these terms: Farmers don’t keep animals that cost more than they produce. People in power have to make those same decisions regarding people just like farmers have to make the same decisions regarding livestock. Someone has to control the size of the herd. Unlike animals, it is the powerless, not the sick or lame, that are selected to be removed.

Politicians have to make difficult, executive decisions for their constituents, even if it seems unfair. That’s what they are elected for and they are giving the voters what they really want. If politicians refuse to make these decisions, they won’t get reelected. There are lots of people willing to run for office and make those executive decisions if the current politicians won’t do it. These choices are natural and a fact of life, Martha. I told you, every society does it.”

Surprised and confused, I replied, “Wait a minute, are you telling me that our society intentionally kills our own people, even women and children, only because the wealthy don’t want to share? That these deaths are intentionally planned? Don’t the wealthy know that poverty is one of the ‘natural’ byproducts of capitalism, that capitalism depends on an official ‘average’ five percent unemployed to hold it up? Are you telling me that all politicians, local ones to national ones, not only know about this murder but willingly participate in it?”

“All of them know about it, Martha,” he told me. “Now you do, too. Don’t ever call me again and don’t ever quote me. I’ll deny I ever told you this.”

No, no they’re not and very far from it. The only reason they garnered the most votes is because many people are so sick, tired and jaded or just plain disinterested in our political system that they don’t even bother to vote for anyone no matter who they are or what they stand for. As such, the idea that FG are the most popular party in this country is based on a logical fallacy. Somebody’s pulling the wool over your eyes and you’re complicit in your words in helping to pull it over others.

Almost one third of our electorate did not vote in the last election. For whatever reason, they chose not to engage in the process. Personally I think it’s a huge leap of faith to begin to imagine that enough of them like FG enough in any way, shape or form to make FG the most popular party in this country. I would say that over recent history, FF/FG/LAB/PDs/Greens have done enough to disillusion so many of our population that they’re just sick and tired of the system.

That’s a shame because if they actually did vote for meaningful candidates, it would be the fastest road to reform of our political system. I’d say FG are tickled pink with the status quo evidenced by their reversal on the referendum to lower the voting age to 16 because that’d probably just show how deeply unpopular they actually are. It’d be interesting, if during that referendum(if it ever gets held as promised) the 16 to 18 year old vote was counted to see where they stand. I also wonder how they’ll vote in the next election after being muzzled last time around…
