'The cocaine trade is booming': 54% of Irish people who use cocaine want to cut down

Over one quarter of cannabis users in Ireland reported almost daily use, which the report said was “suggestive of dependent use”.

A SELF-FUNDED SURVEY of illegal drug use in countries across the world has found that 54% of Irish respondents who use cocaine want to use less of the substance next year, and of this number 14% want help to do so.

This compares to a global average of 41.5% and 12.7% respectively.

Of the 3,363 people in Ireland who took part in the survey, 38.3% had reported using cocaine in the last 12 months.

Organisers of the Global Drug Survey have stressed that their research does not represent feedback from the general population of any country as participation is voluntary.

As such, the authors say, the results may show limitations with respect to “response bias”.

“It is more likely that individuals will respond to surveys if they see topics or items that are of interest to them, and thus by definition will differ from those who do not participate.”

On the international front, cocaine remains the most expensive commonly used drug in the world: the profit on a gram of cocaine from production in Colombia to point of sale in the EU is over 30,000%.

The report says: “The cocaine trade in 2019 is booming. While cocaine use can lead to dependence and numerous health harms including death, the cost of the failed international drug control system and the national policies that implement it are far greater.”

The Global Drug Survey (GDS2019) asked over 123,000 people from over 35 countries across Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand questions about their drug-taking habits and compiled a comprehensive report on the subject.

The self-funded study that aims to inform health policies for the benefit of people who use drugs and the wider community, it states.

Our work is increasingly recognised as a legitimate data source to better understand drug use and its impact on health around the world.

Of the total participants, 98.4% were white and 82.1% were in paid employment. The mean age of Irish respondents was 35, compared to the global mean of 29.4.

Although mostly focused on illegal drugs, it also includes questions on alcohol and tobacco: this year’s study found that half of all drinkers in India, Finland and Ireland wanted to drink less.

What’s noteworthy about the study?

As part of GDS2019, the first ever international evaluation of cannabis labels was carried out, which warns of the side effects related to the use of THC-containing cannabis.

GDS2019 adapted four health messages developed by the Canadian government and added two messages on side effects based on common reasons that prompted people to quit: effects on memory and motivation.

Cannabis labels GDS2019 GDS2019

The survey asked 55,000 people who had used cannabis in the last year whether they believed the warnings and whether they were more likely to smoke less as a result.

By and large, across all ages and genders, the respondents believed the advertisements, but most said that the information wasn’t new and they weren’t less likely to smoke as a result of it.

The majority of respondents said they would also be happy to see these messages on legally purchased cannabis products (58.9%).
58.6% of Irish respondents reported ever having used cannabis. Over one quarter of cannabis users in Ireland reported almost daily use, which the report said was “suggestive of dependent use”. 78.7% reported mixing cannabis with tobacco.

In response to a question posed to recent drug users (the past 12 months) on whether they have encountered police in relation to their drug use in the last 12 months, 18.7% of Irish respondents said they had.

Good thing we have you there at your desk making sure not to raise your head or question your betters. Why can’t they all just toe the line like you?? They’re ruining it for everyone, aren’t they? So selfish.

“All the protestors must be working night or are all on holiday this week.”

What sort of a person puts that in as their 2 cents on the state of this country? There is nothing there about a “desire in [yourself] to do well for [yourself]“. It is nothing but a stuck-up “I’m-alright-Jack” snide remark that you think elevates you up above people who stand up for what’s right.
Do you think that because Enda and Joan tell you we’re in recovery, then everyone should be back on building sites by now? Do you care about the FACT that they massage unemployment figures with help from Job-Bridge, emigration and suicide?
All you’re here to do is distract from the article. That makes you disgusting to me.

Two extremes on this kind of stuff, can see a bit of it ^

v1: O.B.E.Y. your ”betters”, genuflect, bow, scrape go into full peasant mode, there are no special interest the banks only love looking after your pensions and long to make your pension fund grow without skimming anything from you, only communists think capitalism is real….why in fact it’s the opposite! Were practically full on socialist did you know you can get free transport you’re on the dole? and and .

v2. Protest everything. Everything is black and white there are no greys, the government could do everything perfect and choose not to because they’re evil, if we were in charge you’d have a full general hospital in every town, be neutral while somehow also condemning the US and Isreal every other week (thus not being neutral anymore) but never Russia, banks are evil (unless the state owns them) and never do anything good for anyone, and there is nothing at all weirdly insulting about dressing down on purpose to look working class when you grew up going to fee paying schools in upper middle class/wealthy areas without facing a day of poverty or hunger in your life.

Forgetting for a min points that could be made like “if we’d broken up the banks earlier we’d not have needed to make the bailout decisions as it would not have arisin.” there is a kind of irony in an anti-austerity group protesting at BOI.

If the decision had been to not bail out the banks. It would have taken years for new banks to come in and pick through the bones of the old system. Unemployment would have been twice as big, and the recession twice as long, probably with a bigger deficit too, and peoples savings and deposits going bye bye…so basically way way WAY more austerity with less scope for a safety net.
I was against the bailouts but some of these people seem to think there was an easy solution (get it off Micheal O’Leary) on the menu instead of 3-4 terrible ones, Even if we had taxed every ultra-wealthy person in Ireland at 70% and seized all their assets (which we could only sell off once so it would only work for one year) which itself would have been unconstitutional and the courts would have struck down anyway…the deficit was 40b, there was no way of plugging that hole by taxing a tiny tiny tiny number of people.

Ah yeh the wonderful Christmas bonus, which you can only get if you are on jobseekers longer than 15months and can’t get at all if you have the nerve to be on illness benefit for cancer or some other major problem, regardless how long you are on it…what a lovely magical gift it is…too good for us really…

WHEN THEY SHOULD have been protesting was in 2002 when there was still time to prevent all this. Instead of telling those of us who said “seriously I think that’s an iceberg over there” we were ‘doom and gloomers’, they demanded more tax cuts mixed with higher spending, the words “banking regulation” were never uttered, they all swanned gleefully into the banks to get loan after loan after loan, and the middle class got duped into thinking they were rich when they were conned into thinking credit and wealth are the same thing and began a keep up with the joneses game with holiday homes in spain and Bulgarian apartments..now suddenly everyones a damn monday morning quarterbacker who “knew it couldn’t last”. That would have been the better time to protest

I disagree with you. The water issue brought together the people of Ireland who took austerity in good faith and knuckled down to pay the banks off to save Ireland but it was only when the corruption of IW came to light they began to question other things and educate each other on the other issues and then realised how many things in Ireland are corrupt and wrong. IW brought the people together like nothing else could have. Most of the people protesting didn’t pay but are struggling with USC Property tax, mortgages, high rents, ill health, and increased taxes and charges and cuts across the whole population. Most have hade savage wage cuts, increased work loads and increased costs loaded on them over and over and they cant take anymore. Many are seriously ill due to the long waits now in the Health Service for treatment. This government has been shown time and time again to break promises and look after their own circle and spend our money recklessly in the places that profit them most and cripple the rest of us.. The people have woken up now. They are all corrupt. That’s why the people are protesting. Its not just about water anymore.

    Ryan,

“If the decision had been to not bail out the banks. It would have taken years for new banks to come in and pick through the bones of the old system.”

That’s not really the case though. A commercial banking default is not a sovereign default. What the Irish government needed to do in Sept 2008 was to take the entire commercial banking system under state control to keep the branches, payments system and ATMs etc functioning etc. This would have given the state time to assess the banks balance sheets, liquidate the assets and impose losses on the creditors such as bondholders while guaranteeing deposits. In parallel the government would oversee the process of establishing new banks to replace the old failed institutions.

The commercial banking system can take whatever form it’s host nation wishes to serve the society and the economy. It’s important to understand that a commercial bank is simply an institution which the government has licensed to create money (and charge interest) in order to meet requests for credit/loans. The bulk of money in circulation in the world today is created electronically by the commercial banks when they make loans. In issuing credit, banks create brand new deposits in the bank accounts of the borrowers by the simple act of pressing a computer keyboard.

This is a function that can be performed by any institution with the necessary staff, branches, IT infrastructure etc and a license from the central bank. To resolve the crisis, it was simply a matter of the government retaining the necessary physical infrastructure and people, liquidating the assets of the failed banks, paying off the creditors in order of preference with appropriate haircuts of up to 100%, moving the deposits to the newly licensed institutions and changing the sign over the door.

It seems to be about protesting for the sake of protesting. I’ve seen it myself, 30 protesters sitting on o’connell bridge for 3 hours during rush hour bringing the city to a halt. Not a days work in their lives between them. I can tell you know, the people I’ve seen in these protests don’t worry about usc or property taxes or mortgages. They care only for what effects them. They don’t care that on average 1000 jobs a week are being created because they don’t want one of the jobs. They just want to get other people’s hard earned money for doing nothing.

The same idiots will be re elected and nothing will change. We will still be trying to hang on to a crummie job getting feck all for it making someone else rich because the majority of people in the country don’t have the balls to do anything about it!

The country is growing again and the hard working people are getting back on their feet. It doesn’t all have to be anti establishment.

Sorry, the protesters are against the lying thieving politicians who said they had alternatives to the Fianna Fail / Troike austerity to get elected.

When elected the Labour’s Way or Frankfurt’s Way, not another cent to bond holders (Fine Gael) were quickly forgotten and we (as usual) ended up with the same government as the previous Fianna Fail one, just different names / faces in the comfortable Dail seats.

Water charges were the final straw for people who have witnessed their country being sold to vulture funds who take substantial profits from the bail outs that the people have provided.

The “Christmas Bonus” is back, many if not most of the protesters do work, many for low pay so it could be argued the ones who feel the austerity measures most are the ones protesting.

I and I expect many others like me would have been on that protest except for the fact that Derek Byrne and his like have ruined peaceful protesting.

I received a pamphlet from the same anti water charges protesters. On it was a list of cuts/taxes. Dole, Children’s allowances, Christmas bonus, Telephone, fuel, and on it went. USC was 15th on the list. That’s 15th out of 20 items. No mention of property tax as this lot doing the shouting every Sunday lunchtime live in council properties and don’t pay that either. Don’t know why the social welfare did not call them all for job interviews today. If they missed the interviews the dole is cut off.

-stopping people Getting into/out of the city centre, affecting local commerce.

They are letting the government know thousands of homeless, food banks, tens of thousands of children and elderly living in poverty, taxing the workers into poverty to protect vested interests, etc etc is not acceptable in Ireland anymore.
