13-month-old admitted to intensive care after parents influenced by anti-vaccine material online

The boy was admitted to University Hospital Galway.

PARENTS OF A 13-month-old boy have admitted to being “unduly” influenced by anti-vaccine information on social media after their son ended up in the intensive care unit of University Hospital Galway with a preventable disease.

The boy had not received his childhood vaccinations because his parents were concerned about a potential link between the MMR vaccine and autism spectrum disorder after seeing reports on social media.

The parents told UHG staff that they were keen to share their experience to help provide a “more balanced argument on social media, which can often be dominated by anti-vaccine material”.

A report by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) details that the boy presented to the resuscitation area in the emergency department in significant respiratory distress. It also notes that he was a previously well child without significant past medical history, not on any medications.

The boy had been infected with a non-typable Haemophilus influenza strain which can cause serious infection in humans, particularly children.

The boy was diagnosed with a H.influenza strain that was non-typable. However, there is another strain called H influenzae type b (Hib), which before the introduction of the Hib vaccine in 1992 accounted for 80-95% of identified strains causing invasive illness.

Writing about the case, Dr Peter Tormey and Dr Edina Moylett said it highlights the potential for a vaccine preventable disease to cause acute, life-threatening illness in an unvaccinated child.

“The fact that this child was infected with a non-typable H influenzae strain is likely owing to ‘herd’ immunity attributable to the success of the Hib vaccine.

The parents, in this case, were unduly influenced by wholly unproven vaccine related concerns on social media and were very disappointed with themselves for putting their child’s life at risk as a result.

Misinformation

“Oxygen saturations were 78% on arrival and the child was very pale with obvious central cyanosis; there was clinical evidence of significant respiratory distress with bilateral crepitations audible without notable wheeze,” the report stated.

Following his examination, the boy was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for three days. A 10 day course of IV ceftriaxone was completed resulting in a full resolution of symptoms.

Both parents were noted by doctors as being “well informed” regarding vaccine-preventable diseases and were aware of the various diseases this child was more susceptible to. The parents have since said that they were keen to pursue catch up vaccinations.

The biggest challenge healthcare professionals and public health organisations face according to Tormey and Moylett is keeping up with the vast amounts of misinformation surrounding vaccines “with more anti-vaccine blogs, tweets and facebook posts being added daily”.

“This case highlights the negative effect social media can have on vaccine uptake rates. It is important that healthcare professionals, public health organisations, parents and the mainstream and social media seek to provide and disseminate balanced and scientific information regarding vaccines, particularly on social media, where an anti-vaccination sentiment can often prevail,” Tormey and Moylett said.

@Edmund Murphy: and that must have been an horrendous lesson to learn. They made a near fatal mistake of listening to idiots who think they know everything and thinking that they themselves knew better than the medical experts.
By coming out like this they are doing a great service to the campaign for vaccinations. They are basically saying don’t risk your child like we did. That’s better than any advertisement campaign.

@Jane: I gave up reading after the parents were quoted saying that they want their experience shared in order to provide a more balanced arguement online. There is no arguement to be had. No balance required. Vaccinate your children end of story.

@Brendan Hughes: If I understand the piece correctly, the Journal agrees with you about the absence of any need for balance. Correct me if I’m wrong, but as I read it, the child was actually infected by a variant of the disease that the vaccine does nothing to prevent.

@Brendan Hughes: I agree that children need to be vaccinated. But, ever hear of the phrase “throw enough mud and eventually some of it will stick”? Well, social media is saturated with anti-vax crаp. It is very rare that you’ll come across actual medical facts. This does need to be addressed. Health services need to be far more active on social media or we will risk losing herd immunity as more and more people become influenced by the anti-vax lies. Most young people these days get their information from Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, but our health services only ever communicate through RTE, TheJournal, the Irish Times and Independent and through Departmental communiques.

Air pollution is the cause of this, testing on vaccines was carried out when air quality was much better, chemicals are reacting differently now because of this, also all these premature deaths in teens, fully fit and always playing sports and vaccinated. How the hell did the lab that supply the vaccine run out all of a sudden. Because they knew they were partially to blame with their vaccines. I mean I can’t see a supplier of such not planning to stock enough for future generations doesn’t make sense….LIKE YOU U MUPPET

@Peter Heylin: the problem is that if you say to an antivaxxer “I’m right, you’re wrong. Look it up”.. they will dig their heels in even more, and insist that they have substantial proof that they’re right. So you need to balance that by being more persuasive and demonstrative of what goes wrong when you don’t vaccinate.

You and I are reasonable logical people. We know that vaccines work, and that any side effects are usually minor (though some can cause allergic reactions, but that’s not unique to vaccines). Antivaxxers often can’t fathom the logic behind decades of scientific proof.. so if these parents putting their story out to the world, changes the mind of even one antivaxxer.. then it’s the right thing to do.

@winston smith: Actually it does. That is what the 35th amendment was about. It allowed the state to overrule parents when the parents actions would likely cause harm to a child or already has. Basically a parents wishes can no longer override a child’s needs and the state must active ensure they are not. Here is the relevant portion. “In exceptional cases, where the parents, regardless of their marital status, fail in their duty towards their children to such an extent that the safety or welfare of any of their children is likely to be prejudicially affected, the State as guardian of the common good shall, by proportionate means as provided by law, endeavour to supply the place of the parents, but always with due regard for the natural and imprescriptible rights of the child.”

With the pharmaceutical industry pushing all sorts of meds with potentially high risks, it is understandable that people are weary. I can imagine that, in essence, these people wanted the best for their child and thought they were doing the right thing. Vaccines have been around a while and there are definitely more success stories than not. Its good to be informed. Just be careful where you get the info from before potentially risking a life.

@Tom McHugh: the MMR case is the one most people are familiar with, which is why it is mentioned.

2 strains of HI were discussed – HIB which has a vaccine, and the one the kid got, which doesn’t. The theory is that, because of herd immunity, the kid was protected from HIB, but because his body didn’t actually have the vaccine itself, it made it easier for the strain with no vaccine to invade, and his body didn’t have the information (HIB vaccine) to be able to say “hey, this invader is like this other thing we can keep out, so let’s try a similar tactic to fight it off”. Had he had the HIB vaccine, there is a chance it would have better helped him to fight the infection he did get.

@Mirabelle Stonegate: Exactly my point. There was a slight chance that “herd immunity” could have helped in this case. The implcation that the lesson learned justifies making all vaccines mandatory is bogus. The flu vaccine is not mandatory at this juncture. There is much confaltion and word association in the article to deem it “fake news”. Bad science is more dangerous than no science IMHO…

I can see the benefits of vaccines such as this for immunodeficient people (elderly, cancer sufferers etc.), but there seems to be a concerted effort to advocate for vaccines as a panacea. I wonder whom this benfits…

The implied statements in the article would indicate that this vaccine is given on a community wide basis and that the parents were remiss. Is this really the case or are we back to ‘signalling’ again?

So called anti-vaxxers are not the problem – the problem appears to be that the Hib vaccine is causing mutated strains to infect babies. There is no vaccine available that would have prevented this child being hospitalised. It has nothing to do with the baby’s vaccine status. Will ‘The Journal’ at least acknowledge there is no vaccine for this child’s illness? This appears at best to be terribly misleading and at worst an agenda with the planting of a propaganda piece to frighten parents, to shut down people who rightly question vaccinations while paving the way eventually for forced (mandatory) vaccinations. Who told the parents that their 13 month old son’s infection was the consequence of their decision not to vaccinate? This needs investigation by the Medical Council.

*when* this case was or is it an old case chosen as a “teachable moment” ?

70% of Irish nurses yearly refuse the flu vaccine, despite “vaccine educational videos” etc.

My sister was one of the few people that year with swine flu, in critical condition (& put in an induced coma)

There were (very few!) other patients countrywide, all old/ frail/ with significant underlying disorders.

My elderly mother & elderly uncle then had the flu vaccine without reservations.

My mother’s mouth dangerously swelled requiring medical intervention. My uncles needed to go into intensive care.

A young friend, same – the doctor told her she would have died within hours without care.

3 true accounts of these *apparently* exceptionally, almost unheard of, “RARE” flu vaccine, adverse side-effects.

I described 3 cases of people I know with severe adverse effects. They will no longer get the vaccine and have been advised not to by their doctors.

Also in terms of the medical professions wariness of this vaccine, 70% of Irish nurses have refused it, despite intense pressure.

Probably happened here too, but more behind the scenes, we’ll never know how much the Knights of Colombanus influence things in the civil service these days. Apparently they did a lot to try and stop the Stay Safe programme (which is a bit creepy given what we know now), but hopefully they be lost their grip by now.

@Squiddley Diddley: Teresa Heaney who ran in the recent local elections is a devout Catholic and released an anti-vaccination video as part of her campaign. https://youtu.be/L8CHiFLDHgE

    @Squiddley Diddley:

    Hi,

The reason devout Christians and many other religions (who adhere to an anti-abortion stance) are against vaccines in the main is because many use aborted fetal tissue cells.

Some vegans do not use vaccines which require animal cells in their production.

    (I am neither demographic btw).

These interestingly are some of the philosophical and ethical reasons referred to in the press, but not elaborated on.

    Best wishes,
    Anne

Can we now have an article this long detailing a case where a child has been seriously damaged by a vaccine?

    Thought not….

The whole problem is caused by greed, which in turn means lies. People no longer know who to trust, a medical degree does not mean u are an honest person. And most doctors today are simply googling for results. Only today Pfizer has been found to be hiding a drug which reduces Alzheimer’s by 60%. If they lie for money people won’t trust them.

Charge the parents with child abuse. They should also be charged with stupidity but it’s not on the books yet. Finally ban them from all online activity for five years.

The problem with a “balanced debate” is that people such as these two have the scientific and medical evidence in front of them yet choose to ignore it in favor of the lunacy spouted by the anti vaccination kooks. It’s only when the consequences are landed at their door do they accept the madness of that particular lobby. Hopefully the child involved makes a complete recovery and hopefully others see the light before similar or god forbid something worse happens to their child. VACCINATION HAS AND CONTINUES TO SAVE LIVES !!!

Your a moron, if I left mercury out on s counter and some kid swallowed it I’d be locked up for mercury poisoning yet you criticise a parent for not putting mercury and other chemicals inside their child’s body.If nature intended on us needing this stuff we would be made with it inside not putting it into our bodies. How do u feel about steroids, I suppose you think their dreadful and anyone putting that stuff inside to enhance themselves deserve everything they get huh??????

Sorry for pointing out the obvious, but before modern medicine came along literally millions of people died from diseases we can now treat, children died in droves and average lifespans were a fraction of what they are today.
Is this what you mean by “what nature intended”?

This article is based on the assumption that had the boy received the Hib vaccine, it could have prevented him from becoming infected with Haemophilus influenzae.

    But that is false.

The vaccine only protects against H. influenzae type b. As the article explains, the boy was infected with a non-typeable strain, which the vaccine does not protect against.

The Journal.ie needs to issue a correction so as to not continue to misinform the public.

With all the lies and greed by big business and the backing of government. This is the one I believe is the most genuine one that really is there to help us.

However I suppose they are messing with nature as its one of natures way of controlling our population.

But for all things to up rise against big business and greed of them , we could pick a better issue/s.

It is good that the parents admitted being influenced and thank God the child is alright!! Some time ago there was an argument on FB about vaccines and whether or not to go with them!! I just made a point that I contracted German measles as a child ( before there were vaccines) and it left my sight in one eye pretty damaged I was just making the point that it may not have been the case had a vaccine been available!! This person started to preach to me that had I been vaccinated I could possibly now be autistic or dead and that I should realize my glass was half full not half empty! Thought it was very rude I was merely stating a point of which I have lengthy experience!! Anyway thank goodness that little lad is ok!
