6 simple features that will take a small garden from drab to delightful

No sprawling lawns or grandiose fountains required.

LIKE THE BOX room in many homes, a small garden can often be an afterthought when it comes to renovating. But the beauty of these limited spaces is that they let us experiment and push the boundaries when it’s time to tackle them.

As the yearn for a tranquil outdoor space can get stronger as summer rolls around, this week we searched high and low for some big ideas and space-saving additions that will create an impressive garden even if it’s on the smaller side.

1. You raise me up: Raised beds can work wonders in a small backyard that’s paved and is short on grassy areas. Take a leaf out of @peachy_molly’s gardening book and stack yours at different heights for added interest and extra storage to house all of your gardening tools.

Find a selection of raised beds at Countrylife.ie

2. Inside outside: No grassy space? No problem. In fact, it this might make it easier for you to bring your interiors taste outdoors. All you need is the right furniture and finishes to create a nook you’ll want to hang out in when the weather’s fine. We love @kittenasacat87’s rough and ready pallets and stylish lounge chair that can withstand the elements.

Check out Topline.ie for a similar string egg chair.

3. Zone out: Proper zoning of different areas can create the illusion of more space and make more of an impact. @welovehomeblog has an envy-inducing back garden has the right balance of areas that are sectioned off well through clever additions.

Arches, arbours and pergolas like these ones from B&Q can create the same effect.

4. Vertical vision: If floor space is at a premium, then the only way is up. Planters and pots that hang from the wall of vertical pieces of furniture will be your friend. A vintage ladder like @hannahmakes has exudes a shabby chic look and displays plants well – while also allowing for easy watering with a handy drainage system.

Look to Woo Design for a similar design.

5. Simple solutions: Let’s face it, sometimes a whole garden renovation just isn’t feasible and a quick fix is often needed. So, why not invest in a furniture set that’s ideal for any impromptu al fresco dining? Cut the clutter like @ourldnhome does, focus on entertaining and go minimalist with a simple hanging plant pot. A perfect outdoor space for those who live in the city.

For a similar outdoor set, check out this bistro set from Finnish Design Shop.

6. The shape of water: You don’t need a massive garden to have a focal point. Bring all the elements together and introduce an interesting water feature that will attract birds and bring some more life to your outdoor space. We’re inspired by @sarahlinkgardendesign’s feature that looks right at home in the greenery.

I did indeed meet Conor in Paidí Ó Sé’s & I slagged him & insulted about George Colly & his cousin Seán Lemass Jr . But fair play to Conor he took it all on the chin . I do have to say Paidí took it different but Conor was an O.K guy ??

Believe it or not the tribunal is responsible for a tax take of 2 billion, including almost 1 billion from the dirt investigation.
Also, of the witnesses didn’t lie it would have been concluded in 6 months do direct your anger at the cost towards ahern and company.

Don’t know much about Conor Haughey, which is a good sign. It must be rough having a thief and a traitor as your father, a black mark that a straight man would always be running from.
