O'Connell Street stabbing victim identified as 39-year-old from Kilkenny

Gardaí have launched a murder inquiry following the incident.

A MAN STABBED to death on Dublin’s O’Connell Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning has been identified as 39-year-old Peter Donnelly from Kilkenny.

The stabbing happened on O’Connell Street at around 1.40 am after a row broke about between two men who were previously observed by a garda who was on duty in the area.

Mr Donnelly was taken to the Mater Hospital with apparent stab wounds and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

A man in his 20s was arrested after the incident by a second garda on beat patrol in the nearby Marlborough Street area. Gardaí have launched a murder inquiry.

Superintendent Paul Costello, Store Street Garda Station, has asked that any members of the public who were in the O’Connell Street, Cathal Brugha Street, Marlborough Street areas between 1am and 2am yesterday morning to contact An Garda Síochána.

Gardaí are particularly interested in hearing from any member of the public who may have taken mobile phone footage of the incident or any mobile phone footage or dashcam footage in these streets during these hours.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Store St Garda Station on 01 6668000 or the Garda Confidential line  on 1800 666111.

When this war ends the Ukrainian people & their military forces will be held in a far higher regard than any red army victory. Putin has tainted Russias defeat of the nazis and we should not forget the invasion was an attack from bith west and east as Stalin had an agreement with Hitler to carv up poland between them. There was nothing glorious about the soviets during WW2.

@Roy Dowling: Roy Churchill had already stopped hitler in the Battle of Britain. Germany had neither the airforce nor the navy to take Britain.

Probably would have ended in a stalemate. Of course the American developing Nuclear weapons first would have changed everything.

@Roy Dowling: I think you have a bland stereo typical view of history. The Germans lost the war! Do they not speak German. Its an old cliche we would be speaking German. Also ask the German people or the Eastern Europeans what Russia did to them. I am shocked that many of my Polish friends say the Russians were worst than the Germans & listen to the German people in Berlin today to hear what they endured when the red army entered the city. Nothing glorious about what the Russians did during WW2 or even ask the Jewish historians about their treatment in the soviet Union.

@John Comerford: In a US / USSR free WW2 Britian’s fate I’m afraid would have been inevitable defeat as it couldn’t hold off the might of the full German military for ever.

That’s why Churchill was desperate for the US to be dragged into the war somehow.

In reality what lost the war for Germany was the fact that they had an utterly inept leader who was far more of a hindrance to his military than a help.

Had Germany had decent leadership they would have wiped out the BEF in Dunkirk in 1940, not invaded the USSR in 1941 and done everything in their power not to drag the US into the war (ie sign a treaty with an imperialistic Japan.)

And the Americans would never have been able to use atomic weapons against Germany as it would also have impacted the rest of Europe.

@Stanley Marsh: not sure I agree with you. Difficult to take Britain without air superiority and no navy. He lost the Battle of Britain. Lots of speculation as to why hitler held back at Dunkirk. Many felt we wanted peace with the British. In fairness to the Brits they were left alone to fight hitler and they did stop him.

@Allora: “the original plan was to use the a bomb on Berlin”

    Um, no it wasn’t.

Roosevelt did inquire as to the possibility but was quickly told that for a variety of reasons Germany was not a viable target (one of which was the fear that if the bomb failed to denotate the Germans would be able to gain valuable info from it for their own program).

The effects of radiation were well understood by 1940 and were well researched by 1945 by the Manhattan Project themselves but didn’t play any part in the discussion to drop the bomb on Japan.

Central Europe however would have been a different story.

@John Comerford: Without help from the US German industry would have insured that the Luftwaffe would have eventually gained the upper hand in the skies.

As the rest of the war proved once you have air superiority navies become largely irrelevant.

Britian did brilliantly to a point but without the US / USSR their eventual defeat was inevitable.

@Stanley Marsh: Having Italy as an ally was also a hindrance. North Africa was never in the German war plan. Erwin Rommel had to shore up the Italian defence of its African colonies. which eventually lead to Germany’s defeat in Africa. leading to allied victory In Italy which costs many German units and equipment. Germany was not just fighting on two fronts but three.

Notwithstanding the murderous campaign waged by the Nazis, I’ve often been at a loss to see the Russian view of a great victory. They effectively fought on behalf of, and to preserve, a vicious regime led by Stalin who was responsible for the mass murder and starvation of more than ten million of his own people. Huge numbers of Russian troops were needlessly slaughtered due to the incompetence of the political and military leadership who treated them as nothing more than cannon fodder, something that continues to this day. The Russian people seem to have an unfortunate history of rising up against corrupt, brutal leaders only to replace them with something of the same ilk. Hardly something to celebrate or be proud of.
