To help you on your way, we’ve rounded up five spots around the country that suit mini and experienced cyclists alike. Just don’t forget your helmet!
Phoenix Park: The largest enclosed public park in any capital city in Europe, Phoenix Park is the ideal place to go for a family cycle in Dublin. There are 14km of designated cycle trails, and you can rent bikes if needed.

Curraghchase Forest Park: As the name suggests, Glenisca Family Cycling Trail is designed specifically for families. There are two cycle trails (2.4km and 3.6km) throughout the beautiful woodland, plus six walking trails if tired legs don’t want to cycle any more.

Lough Key Forest Park: With 8km of traffic-free trails, Lough Key Forest Park is perfectly suited for those who need to grow their confidence on a bike. For even younger members of the family, the trail is also suited to bikes with child seats and tag-a-longs.

Waterford Greenway: A 46km trail along an old railway line, cyclists can choose to complete the full route of the Waterford Greenway, or make it shorter to suit their abilities. There’s the option to stop for lunch along the way, too, with various pop-up shops along the route during the summer months.

Portumna Forest Park: Located beside the Galway/Tipperary border, Portumna Forest Park has a selection of cycle routes for all ages, with two mountain bike trails, a dedicated family route and a trail that connects the park to Portumna town.

@Deborah Behan: I wouldn’t hold him in too high a regard for 9/11 either… Rudy opposed replacement radios for the NYFD as the ones in use couldn’t work in sky scrapers. The end result was an unknown number of firefighters dying that way when they didn’t hear the calls to fall back before the collapse.

Sorry but saying someone is “extreme right wing”, which he wasn’t, he was right wing or far right at most, doesn’t make them a terrible politician. Were some of his policies counter productive? Absolutely. Were some of his policies (such as those related to crime) useful in lowering crime in the city? Yes, definitely. A great many these days could likely be described as “extreme left” which is also pejorative. Far left policies are outside the norm and not backed by the majority. Same goes for far right. The difference is that far left will attempt to shame those who don’t agree with them into submission. There is nothing inherently wrong with being either right wing or left wing. Roughly half of society is one and half the other. Or a mix that leans either way depending. Being the extreme of either can be troublesome as extremists will rarely work with others to compromise and bring positive change. I find that people bandying about terms like “extreme right wing politician” are rarely able to be objective and compromise.
