British royal Archie Mountbatten-Windsor baptised at 'intimate service'

The private family ceremony sparked controversy in the UK in part because of renovations to the home of the royal couple.

AT TWO MONTHS old, seventh-in-line to the British throne Archie Mountbatten-Windsor was baptised today “at an intimate service”.

The first child of Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, was baptised in Windsor Castle in a private family ceremony that sparked controversy in the UK.

The royal couple’s decision sparked controversy in part because of the recent revelation that their Windsor home was renovated with £2.4 million (€2.7 million) of British taxpayers’ money.

The parents also faced criticism for declining to reveal the names of Archie’s godparents.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released two images on Instagram following today’s christening. One of the images shows the infant amongst his immediate family, including paternal grandfather Prince Charles and maternal grandmother Doria Ragland.

The two sisters of the late Princess Diana, Sarah McCorquodale and Jane Fellowes, were also present in the photograph.

The Instagram post says the baby’s godparents were present but it did not name them.

PastedImage-76783 The couple with their son Instagram Instagram

“This morning, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was christened in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle at an intimate service officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby,” the Instagram post said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment.

“Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie.”

The royal couple also provided details of the christening gown, which has been worn by royal infants for the past 11 years.

“The original Royal Christening Robe, made of fine Honiton lace lined with white satin, was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841 and first worn by her eldest daughter,” the couple said.

@alan: Thanks for that. Interesting detail indeed. His attitude to such things is very arbitrary. For example an anglo-irish officer sending men to their deaths in WW1 typically gets praise from Myers, as a much better kind of man then an Irishman fighting to free his own country. Used to enjoy his column 30 years ago, especially from a stint in the Balkans, but when he became a deliberate contrarian seeking attention he lost me.

First, a baby cannot be baptised for baptism in the Bible is only meant for those making an informed choice.

Second, its only for show. Do you really think Meghan Markle cares about what Jesus thinks? Who does these days? Abortion, LGBT, divorce and so on. Wealth and vanity in her case and “Christians” always give themselves away when they are so bad at forgiving. She hates Kate and William.

Third, the meaning of baptism is that a baby is born unfit for God. That needs to be taken seriously and opposed vigorously. Worse it presupposes that Jesus had to die as a blood sacrifice to give power to baptism so treating it lightly means you are accused of grave cruel disrespect. Baptism involves water for as St Paul put it, it is symbolically drowning you so that you die to being an ordinary bad human being and rise to being holy like Jesus. The violent undertones are there and nobody has the right to santitise this.

Four cultural change is coming – the religious freedom of children can and will be respected.

@Test Religion: At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become
as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 18:1–10)
